In this video, we show how to fix the problem of grooved or worn axles in your C10 by replacing the rear wheel bearings with axle saver bearings. We'll show the problem, explain why its a problem from a basic engineering point of view, and show how to check to see if these axle repair bearings will work for your application. Finally we show how to install them into your axles tubes.
Thanks for watching, and if you found this useful or interesting, consider subscribing and come back and check out our other C10 videos!
Part Number of bearing used: RP-6408
Make sure to check all dimensions before using in your application.

"...thermal expansion of dissimilar metals...!!! EPIC!! Great video, about to do this same repair on my '65 Impala SS. Not only do you show how to do it but a great, simple, understandable explanation of the bearing load. Keep it up!

Thanks Steve! Much appreciated. Glad you found it helpful. Goodluck on your '65 repair!! I hope it works out well for you

i used these on my 1971 monte carlo rear axles. Worked great. once i realized the end with the o ring goes in first and the assembly is not going to go all the way into the axle and be flush like the original axle seal. I should have watched this vidoe first! it is going to remain about 1/8” or less out of the shaft. trust me it will be fine. stop hammering

Your video was awsome and super informative and well explained, so much so that a dummy like me actually came out from it 100 percent better off. Thank you for the video and thank you for the well explained detail it's really really helpful. Bout to do my install 😎🙏

Excellent video! I need to replace the bearings in my 1971 Camaro. The replacement bearing is smaller than the ones you used on the C10 but the procedure is exactly the same. With the new bearing permanently lubricated with bearing grease vs. a constant flow of gear oil. I wonder what the longevity is of these new bearings will be? Can't beat the price for the replacement bearing. New axles, bearings and seals will run about $150 a side vs. $25 for this replacement bearing. If one can get 25-50K more miles on the original axles its a good deal.

A couple of questions for you. How are the repair wheel bearings working out? How many miles do you have on them? I can't seem to find any data on them on longevity. Thanks.

This truck was owned by my brother's coworker. I'll have to get in touch with him and see how many miles he has on it since then. As far as I know, the bearings are still working well, but I'll have to check with him and get back to ya

@@3PedalDevils Thank you so much. Very kind! No rush at all as it has to be better than spending $300+ for new axles.

Great info on how a repair bearing works getting ready to replace mine on a silverado. Only thing I seen in video talking about pressure on the bearing would be opposite the top of the bearing is wear the contact would be not the bottom

Bearings are pseudo-axisymmetric, so the terms "bottom" and "top" are arbitrary. Contact on the bottom or the top is the same thing. It was just a sketch to explain the concept of internal clearance and roller load sharing. Hope your Silverado repair bearing job goes well!

But yeah you're right in the general Cartesian sense, the load would be up!

I've done 10bolt bearing before but with regular bearings and seals. The stock bearings are lubed by the gear oil flowing into them. Can you explain the black spring loaded seal that faces in towards the diff? That seems like it would choke off the gear oil and the wheel bearing is relying on lube just from what grease was packed into it from Timken or National. Is this correct that they are sealed off from the gear oil? Thanks for the detailed video!
