Edit: Sorry for misspelling and mispronouncing Coronet every time. Sorry. I have no excuse. We review one of the muscle car era greats: The Dodge Coronet 440. It is more a symbol of virility than a car

Meh. The vehicle I operate commands about 6000 ft lbs of torque and have much smaller bias ply tires and disc--but unboosted--brakes to reel it in from 80 mph.

Add in that it probably also doesn't have safety glass, definitely doesn't have crumple zones and the steering column might impale you (I'm not sure when collapsible steering columns were implemented) and I haven't even listed all the other things old cars had that made them dangerous.

Real R/T's had 2 piston Bendix disc brakes on the front. I cranked it up to 145mph with the 3:23 gears on the way to school. Went under a bridge Like a bolt of lightening - that's when I backed off. Changed the gears later to 4:56's. and ran Used Indy tires that where about 8" wide. 12.35 was my best Time.

That's the case with almost all muscle cars that the old guys talk up, they were the fastest thing back then but 50 years a later a new v6 camaro would put most of them to shame.

I don't think anyone in the world gets into a '67 Coronet with a 440 and expects it to handle anything like a newer car or have any kind of road feel. Drum brakes, pencil-thin swaybars and torsion bar suspension aren't of this era. That said, these cars are a blast to drive, you just enjoy them for what they are, and not what they can't be.

Despite all its flaws, as an 18yo I would love to own this car as daily since I pretty much only need to get to highschool and back, and it’s big enough to lug all my friends around town and have some fun and even a none blacked out rn makes a fuckin statement when you pull up. Sure for long road trips and for doing any hard driving (which I definitely enjoy on PA backroads) it sucks but I don’t necessarily need that for the 20 minute drive to school. People talk shit about these cars handling but they were never designed for that, as Mr. Regular said it’s made for looks and for going fuckin fast in a straight line from stoplight to stoplight, and who wouldn’t want that as daily given you don’t have a long commute.

I test drove a 1972 Baracuda 440 4 speed with no power steering. I hardly noticed the steering effort while trying to control the clutch that must have required 100 lb plus to compress. Slowly releasing the clutch required a lot of effort. It was easier to just pop the clutch and let the spinning tires do the slipping.

Honestly I had a 1971 Fury with similar steering (Probably the same) and believe it or not you get used to the limited (or nonexistant) feedback from the steering. Safety? My 6 yard old sister, like the rest of us, was not wearing a seat belt. She used the door handle to pull herself up around a turn at a traffic light and rolled out through the open door. Hey, she was pudgy, so not even a scratch. So onward to Newberry's 5 and dime we went. Yeh, she shoulda been laying under the back window as she did on longer drives. Safety makes you weak and complacent.

Videos like this are why I love Regular Car Reviews. Videos like this are why I _keep coming back_ to Regular Car Reviews. I own a 1970 Ford Torino GT convertible (Well, I don't _own_ it, I'm more the car's caretaker while my father works out of town every two weeks) and I fully understand the "Ride or Die" mentality that's associated with classic muscle muscle cars. Hearing the 351 under the hood roar to life never ceases - and it will never cease - to bring a big, dumb, goofy grin to my face, knowing that I have a piece of automotive history, however small it may be, sitting in my driveway. Riding in it, you can _feel_ the air of opulence associated with a classic convertible, and you really start to understand the mentality of someone who, out of every car they could've chosen to be their first, went with something as braggadocios, with the bravado, as a car with more power than comfort. The reverence people hold these cars with isn't because they're _nice,_ it isn't because they're _special,_ it's because of the juxtaposition. Seeing an old Mustang, an old Charger, an old Torino, in modern traffic is like seeing an old family friend that you hadn't seen in however many years, even if it's just for a few fleeting moments. These old cars are smiled upon because, no matter how old, or how young, they put a smile on everyone's face. Everyone knows what a '65 Mustang looks like. Everyone knows what a '69 Charger looks like, and almost everyone loves them. Like what Mr. Regular said right at the end - These old cars, with their overbored V8s and overestimated power outputs, irrecoverably shaped car culture, for better or worse. To see them still around is special, even if the cars themselves are not. Fight the Night, Because Tomorrow May Be Futile.

You can REALLY tell the cut off from the Gen-x'rs here to the Gen-y/Millennials. Gen-X and Boomers know this car is cool and that with some modern bolt ons' like tires, shocks and springs or Torsion bars you could really change the handling of this car. Go a little deeper and put in a O/D trans, maybe some disc brake conversion and different P/S pump and that solves a lot of the modern car issues that the Millennials have with any car built before 2005. I love Mr. Regular and his reviews but man, I was born in 1970 and drove cars of this era as dallies and I did not fear for my life every time I closed the door and hit the starter. Another thing that I don't think gets taken into account is the fact that this car is now 52 model years old. I mean come on when I was 36 in 2006 a car that old was a 1954 model year, and I wouldn't just stand and gasp at how did these Flintstone mobiles get anyone from point A to B without killing them. It's all perspective but come on its not like a model T vs. a Tesla.

Every time I stop to get diesel was a half hour to an hour event. Literally every man and woman at the fuel station had to come up and look at the inside and outside of this thing nobody could believe how good a shape it was in. When I finally got it to the guy in fort Wayne, I had him back it off of my trailer and he immediately whips it around takes it out into the street leaves about a 60 ft Black Mark goes to the end of the street does a 360 donut and comes back and drives it into his Warehouse. Only then does he say okay I'm ready to sell this now. LOL. It was one of the more fun cars that I've ever transported.

You don't exactly have to be a muscle car expert to realize that Mr Regular's car-interests aren't muscle cars. Edit: For example, Chrysler had the 413 in 1959, Chevy the 409 in '61. Engines were huge well before the Mustang came along. The Horsepower wars began in the 50s and raged on with the likes of the Chrysler Hemi-powered 300s, fuel injected Corvettes, and supercharged Thunderbirds. What was crazy about the 60s is that the big powerful engines got stuck in smaller and smaller cars as the American automotive industry introduced smaller cars to combat the tiny imports. Honestly, I think Roman is more knowledgeable about cars than Mr. Regular.

Love your reviews but you overlooked my passion car responsible for opening the Pony car war; the Barracuda. It debuted 2 weeks before Mustang and boasted the 273cid V8 or LA engine; and the Mustang didn't even have a V8 upon introduction. To back up further, MOPAR arguably had the first muscle car, which by definition was a small car with powerful V8, and bare creature comforts, ie a seat, a heater, and engine. That car was the 1962 Super Stock Dodge with a 413 cid Max Wedge. I do appreciate your work, and I'm just a guy with a passion who does not want to see history mis-recorded. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I had a '67 GTX, almost exactly the same car, but much better received by enthusiasts, perhaps because more famous racers like Sox and Martin dominated Super Stock in one. SS was the most talked about class back then. The 440 in these '67 B-bodies was touted by Motor Trend as "The quickest way from 0-100," deliberately dissing the hemi. The 440 was a very torquey motor and very streetable. Most stoplight races were short and the torque/ weight combination of these cars put the power to the pavement well through the limited slip rear. 8-3/4 was the factory choice for these when equipped with an automatic. I ruined mine by doing a poor bearing job and then put a Dana from a '68 Roadrunner that had been wrecked ($125 I paid--it was a lot for me then). I wouldn't say these were bad cars at all. Primitive, yes (I had manual steering) but it handled OK, stopped adequately with drums all around, stayed cool and worked in all weather. Tested top speed was 107 in mine, with 3.55 gears. I never took it to the track, but they were said to run high 13's stock. That was plenty on the street in those days. The stock 1-2 shift produced a reliable tire chirp bone stock. Until the advent of aftermarket heads, the '67 440 head was the prized wedge motor head (Max-wedge heads were rare, different and pretty much only found in track cars).

Best colors, best horse power, best sound, and that came with all their cars. Chrysler also had a really good parts warranty,

hey! don't dis the '67 Coronet! I learned to drive on that car......and blame all future speeding tickets Ive received on that fact. Ours was dark green, and my brother & I called it our BatMobile (yes, we were very 60's children). Our parents were depression era kids, so I dont think they were looking for muscle car glam. We went on a lot of road trips -- from Florida to Maryland to Ohio to Boston, and all up and down the east coast. I never heard my father complain about its performance, and he a NASA engineer. It was definitely a fun car to drive, right up to the day my brother totaled it at 20plus years old..... I still miss it

I think I got around 10 or so. Back then you weren't driving far and a fill-up was $4-5. I used Getty Premium, as it was the cheapest. I'd go in to the same place every couple of days and buy a couple bucks worth. One day when I ran out on the driveway apron and the mechanics helped push me into the pump islands, one asked me why I came in so often instead of just buying a fill up. I told him "Because then I wouldn't have any money in my pocket." True story.

My dad bought a 66 Dodge Polara with a 440 back in the late 70s from his boss for $125. It was during the time of odd and even gas days at stations in NY state(the last digit of your license plate corresponded to which day you could buy gas). It was in great shape and was the meanest looking grill on a car I ever saw. The trunk was so big that when my dad bought my sister and I 10 speed bicycles they both fit in the trunk with the lid closed. It also hauled ass for such a giant beast. And it was that ugly, dark, pea green color so popular back then.

In the late 40's when the name was launched Big Band/Swing music was in vogue and a Coronet was one among the musical instruments many such bands used...It wouldn't be a stretch to say a large portion of the populous at the time hearing Coronet would have visualized a musical instrument rather than a 'bejeweled crown'.

late 70's engine. in my books, a crate motor does not count as a horsepower war-era engine. same thing for the 540, 572, 632, 705 and 727 big block motors. never was *ever* in a factory delivered car. was short lived as a truck engine, too. even in the 70's diesel engines with comparable HP made better torque and mileage.

Because most people either don't notice, or already know the pass mirror was optional.
@p3l1k44n1
@p3l1k44n1 7 лет назад
Passenger mirror is kinda useless.. You are only looking at driver mirror when you're merging.. Nobody overtakes you legally from the passenger side so you don't really need to look there.. I guess it's useful for parking and just car symmetry but back in the day, that one mirror shaved off would accumulate you money when making millions of cars. That's like 50 bucks per mirror times million = 50 million bucks saved by shaving that mirror off and having it as an option.
@504RoadTrips
@504RoadTrips 7 лет назад
foxzygranpa passenger side mirrors weren't common in the US until the late 70s and weren't mandatory as late as 1994. My '94 Saturn didn't come with one. I believe it was a $30 dealer option.

@p3l1k44n1 7 лет назад
My 67 ford P5 17M didn't come with a passenger window but it does have a slot for it so it was an option even as late as back in the 60's.. It has a chrome plated metal cap on the slot where the mirror would have been.. Also it has additional spots for mirrors on the front fenders if you wanted to mount them there.
@no1DdC
@no1DdC 7 лет назад
Neither did the Audi 100 in the '80s, it was an option. Later, most VW group cars had smaller passenger side mirrors. Ford did this for a long time as well, if I'm not mistaken.
