A fun-to-drive 390 V8 with manual transmission, the Cougar has a ton of driving appeal. This Cougar is an American favorite muscle car with a 390 Marauder V8 engine. When it was first introduced, its design was based on the Ford Mustang with a 3 inch longer wheel base and new sheet metal. A full-width divided grille with hidden head lamps and vertical bars define the front. It was sometimes called the "electric shaver grille". At the rear, a similar look has the license plate surrounded on both sides with vertically slotted grille work that hides the tail lights with sequential turn signals.
Mercury made an effort to make the Cougar look more "European" than the Mustang. Besides the base model and the luxurious XR-7, only one performance package was available for either model--the sporty GT.
This is the only generation that has covered head lights. The GT package includes an FE-series big block, along with an upgraded suspension to handle the extra weight of the big engine. It also gives better handling, more powerful brakes, better tires, and low-restriction exhaust system.
The Cougar was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year for 1967. Also in 1967, renowned NASCAR racecar builder, Bud Moore, campaigned Mercury Cougars in the Trans-AM series with Ford Motor Company support. The team featured superstar drivers such as Team Captain Dan Gurney, Parneli Jones, Peter Revson, David Pearson, and Ed Leslie. This added to Mercury's sales and boosted the Cougar's popularity.
