A short documentary film featuring the late Harry Howell, who was honored in 1967 when he played his 1,000th game. Also has some good ice level and in the stands game footage taken at the "old" Garden, two games vs Boston and Chicago. Also some locker room and practice footage with coach Emile "The Cat" Francis. This was shown on MSG cable back around 2007 or so.

This was great. Not a Rangers fan but sometimes I'd rather watch these videos than a game now.

This is for real old time Ranger fans, like me. I heard the radio broadcast of that special night on the car radio as a 13 year old. So many of those players have left us since. It was and still is a great game. Emile never won The Cup, but he was a great ambassador of the game, and a fine gentleman.

Best part is the glimpse of a game at the old Garden. Great atmosphere. Pre zambomi days guys skating with the barrels to clean the ice.

These were not the pre-zamboni days. All the other original six buildings had zambonis. In the case of the old Madison Square Garden, the labor union wouldn't allow it until the new Garden opened in January of 1968.

There was no glass behind the benches and penalty boxes, only wire fencing If you sat in that area you could hear everything the players were saying and the opposing team could hear all that was being said in their direction BTW the benches were on opposite sides of the ice because the rink was only 185 feet long

I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen the old Madison Square Garden in video footage, and it’s in color too which is amazing to see. I’ve learned a lot of things about this just from the video like how intimate the arena looked, very similar to Boston, also there were steps going into the locker room like Chicago used to have, looks like a very cramped hallway as well. A very interesting place

Yeah, I noticed that too. Usually they just show the ice but this time the camera showed so much more and clearly. It was fun seeing what the old Garden was like. I had heard so many good things about it. The present Garden is nice but doesn't have the old charm and character of the old one.

There were actually 4 different arenas called MSG. This one opened in 1925 and this was the last full season the Rangers played there. Also last season before expansion.

Yes it was similar structurally to the old Boston Garden thought I believe the capacity was larger, about 15,900, and the rink (ice surface itself) was bigger than the small ice of Boston

This is great to watch. The Vault was terrific as it captured hockey in its elements. Love the live game footage for Howell Night. Plus Emile Francis' pregame speech.

Wonderful footage, and some very young Rangers! - Hadfield, Gilbert, Ratelle. And check out the 'zamboni' on the middle of the video.

Great video. Brought back memories of the Blueshirts in the mid 60's. Have only attended a few live NHL games. The second or third NHL game I attended had the Rangers going against the Leafs at MLG in Toronto. Believe the date was sometime in March 1965, where the Rangers lost by a small margin. Even back then, the Rangers had the makings of a good team. Their passing and playmaking was good.

One of the last games I attended at the old msg I was 16 , it was christmas week Dec 27,1967 vs the North Stars. It ended in a 3-3 tie. But it wasn’t until many years later did I realize that it was the only game Bill Masterton would play at msg. He died about a month later after hitting his head on the ice during a game.

MSG III never had a Zamboni. Watch closely for the guys scraping the ice with snow shovels and then two guys pushing a drum on it's sides with wheels to lay down a fresh coat of water. This continued in the new MSG IV in Feb 1968 for quite some years before they finally got first one Zamboni and then another.

First row of the side Balconies on 49 and 50 st were as good as any seat in the NHL. They hung over the ice and it was being right on top of rink.

Boston was built the same way and it made it on top of the ice. Actually I think both arenas were built that way because it was designed by the same guy.

Noted that Harry Howell won the Norris Trophy that year as best defenseman. The buzz cut rookie for the Bruins would own it after that.

I believe...that could be Dave Dryden (Kens brother) in net for Chicago? He was mostly a back up at the NHL level and a few inches shorter then Ken. He would bolt for the WHA and then find himself back in the league with Gretzky's Oilers in 1980.
