A full cycle clip of the recently restored Speed Queen A78F washer and 166F electric dryer!
Both the washer and dryer were assembled during the Summer of Love in 1967 in Rippon, WI, and were lovingly used in a cabin in the upper portion of Michigan for decades until they made the trek to Iowa in the fall of 2021. The dryer was restored with new seals, rollers, belts, and a deep cleaning during the early spring of 2022. The washer required donor parts from another washer and was completely torn down and restored earlier this year.
The washer has been coined a 'solenoid-drive' Speed Queen by appliance collectors as it uses two large solenoids to shift for agitation and spin, which were used up until 1970 when Speed Queen changed over to a reversing motor arrangement for home-use washers that provided a brake to meet UL standards that went into affect in 1971. This washer is the best of both worlds as it has all of the characteristics of a 1950's and early 60's Beam-SQ but was the first washer model built on the new platform with a removable front and revised console that was used in various forms for the solid tubs up until 1980.

Amazing! I don't think I have ever heard a SQ solid tub run so smoothly. Nice restoration work!

Indeed it is a solid tub design, I'm assuming that water is drained by centrifugal force over the top of the drum?

That was the most amazing spin cycle I've ever seen. I mean 10 seconds and nearly at full speed 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾

There is something about the wash action of Speed Queens. Especially with the aluminum agitator. It's literally like the clothes are almost dancing in the tub. Lots of action going on. Just goes to show a simple three-bladed straight vain can tow the line.

These are the bee’s knees. I notice the dryer is electric, which is rare for me to see in this era. My family only bought SQ’s ever since the 50’s. They lasted decades before in home repair kinda fell by the way side for them as most didn’t either know anything about them or parts just weren’t as plentiful and it just wasn’t as cost effective to keep them going anymore. So sad, but I enjoy seeing the survivors restored and loved today! 👍👍

This is the smoothest, quietest, most vibration free and best performing Speed Queen I’ve ever seen from the 1950s through the 1070s. Congratulations on an incredible restoration with brilliant results.

What a beautiful pair! You did an amazing job with the restoration. These machines are really wonderful to see working and functioning as they did back in the day. You just can’t beat these vintage workhorse units! By the way, if I was there, I would go nuts seeing all your beautiful machines! 😅

Another great restoration and video. Plus, another memory for me. My parents had a 1965 Speed Queen, not as fancy as this, but the wash cycle was the same. Thanks for posting! Your filming is awesome.

This Speed Queen set is to die for! It is just like brand new! My Speed Queen TC5/DC5 set reminds me of this SQ laundry pair from the late 1960s! It is very aggressive as well!

Your folks machine was from the Raytheon era of ownership after MaGraw Edison sold Speed Queen in 1980. The sale was due to regulation changes in efficiency. The basic premise of the Raytheon era SQ’s is still used in the Alliance Laundry Systems built machines with modifications over the decades since 1980. This particular SQ platform was a laundromat workhorse for decades well after 1980.

The only drawback to the overflow rinse is if you use fabric softener, it would rinse it out, or make it weak.

I would buy these in a heartbeat. I dont understand why Speed Queen wont stick to this type of wash action with this agitator . This new HE era of washing is not effective for getting clothes clean. I want my washer to beat the hell out of my clothes so when i walk by people will know damn he smell good. Yea because my clothes are clean, lol. Thank you for posting these wonderful restored machines.

Clothes today are not made or constructed well and this machine would most likely rip many modern fabrics to shreds. But these machines are beautiful to watch in action. I could watch this wash action all day!
@DylBuilder1
@DylBuilder1 Год назад
They still do, they make the TC5/DC5 set which is almost exactly like this in terms of wash and operation! People who complain that agitators are rough have yoga pants and Nike apparel and fake clothing. Us who have cotton clothing need proper washers!
@Channel-cm7yc
@Channel-cm7yc Год назад
I grew up with era of SQ. I currently own a TR set and that’s a different wash system and personally it’s the detergent that’s letting us down. I use Bubble Bandit with my 2018 TR-5 series and not one disappointment is to be had with it and it’s 5 years old now and doing fine. The machine that raised all the hell on RU-vid was not working correctly. Agitation is no where near that pathetic with the agitub machines.

With regards to that spin pulley caption at 12:31, how many rpm's did it originally spin? And what was making all that "belching" during the deep rinse between the overflow rinses?
@swestoyz
@swestoyz Год назад
Original RPM was rated at 625 RPM. The noise you're hearing is cavitation from the pump running without enough water to force the remaining water from the housing.
