The 1967 VW Microbus, or Type 2, or transporter, or kombi, or samba, or splitty… will put a smile on just about everyone's face. For many, it's an icon. A symbol that represents an era, a movement, or part of their childhood. Everyone knows the Bus, but what is it like to drive? Well, stick with me and find out!
Thank you Royal on the Eastside for loaning me the bus used in this review!

My mother had a 1965 bus just like this one in the exact same color. She owned it for over 27 years. It was really a reliable vehicle, and never gave her any trouble. The odometer also rolled over several times. She bought it in 1967 for $1750.00 from a VW dealer. When she sold it in 1995 it had a ton of miles on it, and she got $1,500.00. That was back in the days before these split window buses started to really appreciate in value. I remember the bias ply tires on these would last 80,000 miles. I also remember her figuring out the gas mileage per gallon of gas. It was getting 23 miles to the gallon of gas back in the day when everyone else drove cars that would only get 12 miles to the gallon. Everytime she drove that bus it got a lot of attention. People would honk, and give the bus a thumbs up. Also people wanted to buy it off of her all the time. She also never had a overheating issue with it. A few months ago, I was on the freeway, and saw her old bus going down the road. These were built to last a lifetime.

Thanks for posting ... as someone who recently turned 60, I really enjoyed the trip in the "way back machine". I never rode in any of these (only Beetles) but I used to work with a guy who had one, and I used to smile at how long it took for it to get up to speed when he left work ... and he was trying to get everything that he could out of it. Regarding safety ... just look at that front bumper ... that's all that you had.

My Dad was a civil rights activist and my Mom was a hippie. They had no car until my dad bought a VW microbus for a hundred bucks in order to have something to drive my mother to the hospital and drive her and me home in. My mother, heavily pregnant with me, had to get a job to pay for repairs to get the thing running.

I've driven my 67 bus since 1969 when I lived in it on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. No problems (except cops in the day) but it does require love and attention (e.g. Valve adjustment and oil change every couple of thousand miles). I have over one million miles on mine and it still shifts smoothly. You just need to know how to drive an old standard transmission. Not at all scary to drive, and don't worry about the fool on your back bumper. In the 70's I used my bus to do field work in areas of The Great Basin that were 25 miles from the nearest pavement. Never in a hurry and never got stuck got stuck. BTW, the doors do lock from the inside. You just rotate the handles forward.

My mother had a 1965 bus just like the one pictured here for 27 long years. She bought it in 1967 at Johnson Pacific Volkswagen in Oakland. CA for $1,750,00 with 37,000 miles. Her neighbors went through 6 or 8 cars during the 27 years she owned it. All of them could not believe the thing was still running. Everywhere the bus went, there were a lot of looks, and attention. People wanted to buy that bus off of her all the time. During the 27 years it racked up a lot of miles, and the 1500 engine was durable and reliable. Every time we went to Berkeley, Ca, there were busses all over the place, and an offer to purchase. When she could no longer drive, the bus had to go, and it did get $1,500.00. I have seen it on the road a few times recently, and it is still going. I also remember locking the front doors from inside by pushing up on the door handle, and when locking upon exiting you pushed in the outside door button when closing the door. Her bus also did not have front tie rods on the suspension. Her later bay window bus did have tie rods.

Your loose steering is probably due to worn tie rod or drag link ends. If so, replace and lubricate. Also check the pivot of the big L-shaped piece connecting the drag link to the tie rods. Wear of any of these parts causes loose steering. Shifting is awkward due to a worn nylon front shift rod bushing, a weak point in all air-cooled Volkswagens. This can be easily replaced on Type I VWs, but on the bus you are supposed to have to pull the engine and transaxle to do so, but I have done it without such an extreme measure. Check the rear shift rod bushing and the connector between the shift rod and transaxle. Breakage here means driving home in 3rd gear. You can see the ground through the pedal support holes because someone removed the front belly pan to service shifting or steering and did not replace it. Find another one and put it on. Tighten the bolts holding the rear swing arms to the reduction gear cases. Get John Muir's Compleat Idiot book and study it. Use Internet sources for maintenance information: www.vw-resource.com and thesamba.com are great! Replace brake master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and brake lines and fill with DOT-5 brake fluid so you will never have another leaking wheel cylinder again.

My parents bought a '67 Splitie Deluxe new. The traded it in for a more-stable-in-cross-winds '71 Bay window. The seats in this splitie are from a later bay window bus. 1967s had salt-and-pepper seat covers on the Deluxe model. The gearshift is long to reach the floor, and then the shift rods go all the way to the back of the vehicle...thus the "gearshift stuck in a jar of peanut butter" feeling.

Mother had a 1965 like the one pictured here. It was a durable and reliable bus. She also bought a 1971 bus with a 1600 dual port motor. That 1971 bus was unreliable, and had to have the engine replaced four times in 137,000 miles. Her 1965 bus had 137,000 miles before any engine work was needed.

Hey, my steering would go a full 90 degrees !! 15 mph in the neighborhood was freakin scary, so I replaced the center link..harbor freight tool to pop it off, I cranked all the way down, and nothing, I said, "God help me", and BOOM, it popped off. Big improvement. Just likes to run 50 mph....
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker 2 года назад
Looking back, I was a fool to sell my 67 camper. It was near mint in '77, with a custom motor that put out a respectable 85hp. Not much by today's standards, but it would get up the pass with two guys, the dogs, and all the gear and never lose speed. That was due to the high duration cam, bigger lungs, blueprinting and balanced rods, etc. Unfortunately, all that power took out 4th gear because those older transaxles were designed for about 55 mph tops. It wasn't until the 68 model year that they got a taller gear ratio and could handle higher freeway speeds. A tip for anyone with heater box problems: iF your heater boxes are nt completely rusted out, but the doors are sticky and don't deliver heat to the front, try getting stiffer springs. That's all I needed to do. They are simple refridgerator springs availabkle at any hardware store in many lengths and strengths. Works like a charm. These rigs are so simple, it's stupid.

67's came with back up lights....first year for 12volt and a bus is 9 inches longer than a beetle...did you know that there were over 20 companies doing conversions, not just westfalia.... I have one lowered bus and I agree with 5:50 - clocking your noggin with that f n door opening....the pedals are protected by a belly pan, which this one is missing.

The shift pattern on my '64 Type 2 Microbus (which I acquired in 1977) IS EXACTLY like that of my '72 Type 14 Karmann Ghia. The only difference is the longer shift lever on the Type 2. The VW Microbus is the most fun car to drive, sort of half truck, half sports car. Be careful driving, mount the spare tire on the front of the Microbus, and don't get into any head-on collisions.

OMG, Flashbacks! That is near to the one my step-father bought in the late sixties, a '68, same colour but without the interior wicker and other mods. I learned to drive in that beastie with the four-on-the-floor . . . . . . as to the size in the driver's seat, my step-dad was 5'10" and I was 5'7" when I was learning to drive; lots of room! And, as an nine year old, I rode in the back over the engine with my cousin Annie, seven more cousins in the back seats and my folks up front. . . . my step-dad dropped her on her right side twice, once due to ice. Corners are always an adventure. . . . opening a vent window back towards the engine in the summer helps cooler her in the heat. . . . one more note, I once got her to 65 mph on a slight downhill grade.

The Type-2 overheating problem was caused largely by owners/mechanics who didn't understand how the cooling system worked. There was a large seal on the floor of the engine compartment. That seal was to make sure that only the cool air from the side vents ABOVE the engine was sucked in, forced over the hot cylinders by the fan and shroud tins, then discharged UNDER the engine onto the street. Many people removed or neglected these seals, so the hot air was sucked right back up into the fan inlet. People also didn't understand the complexity of the cooling tins and removed/altered them. This meant the fan did very little to cool the cylinders, especially at idle or in stop-and-go traffic.

If people still want to drive these, I just ask one simple thing. If 5 or more vehicles are stuck behind you on a single lane road, please pull to the shoulder to allow them to pass. No one behind you is having fun like you.
