1968 Re birth of the Town Centre at Barrow-in-Furness

A short historical film, taken from Bill Noble's office window, in the town hall, of the destruction of Barrow's old town centre and the start of construction of the new version. The footage was started in 1968 and continued for some time. The town had high hopes for this new venture but sadly not everything goes as planned.
This reworked video replaces the original one that has been available on RU-vid since 2021. The picture has been stabalised, the computer generated commentator (that some viewers complained about) has been replaced with captions and the music has been changed. Even AI software can't do much to recover 55 year old film and make it look like current 4K video.

Amazing footage. Sad to see the town centre as it is nowadays.

Amazing footage. I was born that year so it's really interesting to see. Just to the left of the cooling tower was the school I first went to in 1973... namely Thwaite Street school (which is now replaced with Ramsden Infants which I also went to briefly in 1975) which was a classic Victorian type school... I've never really seen any decent photos of it inside sadly... I put a lot of them on the Barrow in old photos facebook.

It was once a great town. Even I, living in distant New Zealand, have heard of this shipbuilding mecca. I am sorry it is now in decay.

I left Barrow shortly after this date. Happy memories, but now there is virtually nothing left of the place I called home. Of the four schools I went to until I was 16, only one remains, South Newbarns Junior. In the dream of "progress", the town was killed.

@b.nichols3255 Same here. Abbotsmead Infants, the Grammar Schools and College of Further Education all seem to have gone. I am surprised the awful old Roose Junior building is still standing but like you I moved to South Newbarns.

It wasn't a rebirth. It was a murder. A lost opportunity.
