1969 Ford Talladega 428 Cobra Jet Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #137
Ford was "all-in" when it came to NASCAR in 1969, and this 1969 Ford Talladega is the street-going result of their racing and aerodynamics research. These cars featured special sheet metal to improve high-speed aerodynamics, and the results were worth the efforts. Its a 428 Cobra Jet powered ride with a bench seat and column shifter, and it's our Muscle Car Of The Week!

I saw a white one at a diner in driver condition in white few years back. I was rude enough to go inside and ask around until I found the owner. He said it was mostly rust free, still had the original paint and some of the bright work was pitted but he was happy just driving it and had plans for a restoration in the near future. We did walk outside and he showed off the car after I he finished eating. It was in very nice shape for an old car that was almost a daily driver from the day it was new. My memory may a little off but I think he said he inherited the car from his mom. He knew the history of the model and had all the documentation from the original owner. I know, that is a pointless story but I am still stoked that actually saw one in person that wasn't at a show.

I miss the days when NASCAR meant stock cars. I would buy a modern race car for the street if that ever happened again.

Super cool car. These and the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 2 are probably the best NASCAR stock car body ever made. These cars are the reason the Dodge Charger 500, Charger Daytona, and Plymouth Superbird exist. The 68-69 Torino/Cyclone 428 CJ fastback were some of the best looking muscle cars ever made imo

With today's vehicles (I have the V6 Cyclone Mustang and realize it would have worn out my 68 SS Chevelle) it is easy to discount these "full weight" cars but they still have a place in my heart for sure. The style, ride, and feel was just SO cool. Yeah, give me the speed and performance (and fuel economy) that I can get today in a daily driver but these cars are the king.

Great information in this video about this car. But here's 2 more interesting facts: #1......While a rear bumper was indeed used to create the front bumper, it was cut completely in two right in the middle, to SHORTEN the entire bumper lengthwise, so it would fit the front of the car, as well as give it that swept point in the middle..........and #2.......While the 1969 Ford Talladega did win many races for the season, it NEVER won at the Talladega OR Daytona track in 1969!!! ......which is kind of ironic, lol. Great car though!
@styldsteel1
@styldsteel1 Год назад
Hey Buddy, that front bumper isn't exactly transplanted directly. It's cut and welded in three places to achieve the soft but subtle shape backwards. You can see all three welds from the back of the bumper.

I had a chance at a decent one just like the feature car back in 82. Couldn't afford it being 22 years old and still at home. $2800. Still think about it. Sweet car, and thanks for the segment. Cheers!

Always felt like Ford should've homologated the Boss 429 engine in these and the Cyclone Spoiler II instead of in a Mustang. Really didn't need another performance Mustang when they already had the Mach 1, Boss 302, and Shelby GT350 and GT500
@gregorytimmons4777

Much better car for a 429 anyway. Which a Mustang really is not
@jeremythompson9122

True. Plus Mustangs are a dime a dozen anyway. I'd rather have a Torino or Cyclone. Or a 427 Galaxie

The front bumper was a rear bumper that was pie cut in the center, bent slightly and welded back together, then chrome plated. Even though the front and rear bumpers started out the same, they would not interchange after the modification was done.

If I may proffer a comment; the Talladega wasn't the only one with staggered rear shocks. My 69 Fairlane had them. I believe it was a part of the SCJ package which this one looks to be since it has the oil cooler.

1970 to 1972 amc hornets had the same bumpers front and back. you could not swap them because the bolt patterns are a little bit drifrnent i believe but they are the same bumper
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 3 года назад
Ya couldn't swap the front with the rear bumper on the '69 Talladega either, because in order to make it fit on the front, they had to cut a rear bumper clean in two at the center to shorten it in order to fit the narrower front of the car, as well as give it that swept point in the center out in front.

very nice job Kevin -- For sure my favourite channel -- The CJ engine may not have been the best of the best but it was very very good, Had one in my Shelby GT500 and it was all i wanted and more. That Talladega in that colour with a 4 sp. ,4:10 gears and posi would have been a winner for me, but I certainly wouldn't kick that one outa my garage. :)

I'd say the Hellcat answers the question of whether we would buy a street version of a race car. Even if the hellcat isn't a nascar based race car.

The bumpers may have been the same front and back initially, but if I recall correctly, they had to cut them up and weld them in more than a dozen places to get the desired aero effect on the front end.
@Johnnycdrums

With such limited production, you'd think the least they could do was give it the Boss 429 engine. These things must have been really slow sellers.

The front bumper is actually a 68 van rear bumper modified for the aero design
@patriciadoughty5695
@patriciadoughty5695 2 года назад
The front bumper was the same as the rear bumper but had two inches cut out of the center to fit the front with a slight angle to it. So the front and rear bumpers are not interchangable as he said. I owned that same color T'dega for ten years.

Great presentation of a real nice car! My favorite is the '69 Z/28. Saw a survivor in St. Petersburg FL. a few years back, spoke with the owner. It had the original Tuxedo black paint with white stripes, ( a little rough ) and the numbers matching 302. Hounds tooth interior was all dried up from the Florida sun and the dash was all cracked. It had 60,000 miles on it. If it were for sale, which it wasn't, I would have been glad to pay $20,000 for it. and not change a thing. 🤓

Not true, it is actually the stock Fairlane rear bumper cut in three pieces and rewelded into shape.

When Nascar and Ford ruled the road and the track. Then the Super Bird and Richard Petty took over. If Ford would have put The Ford Torino Cobra a very rare car indeed.On the track! It would have given The SuperBird and Petty a run for the Title. But Ford backed down. I believe 3 were made! One Orange, White and Red in color. Ford took tbe Torino Cobra to a higher level. I would have bought one. If they had made a Street version of it! The F-150 and the Mustang are still being produced! But not for long. Get em! While you can. Shawn.

Incorrect facts in this video: Long nosed Fords debuted at Daytona in February of 1969 and not Talladega; The front and rear bumpers do NOT interchange on a Talladega (or Spoiler II). The front bumper is MADE from a modified rear bumper (cut/narrowed/ Veed and then rewelded); Race Talladegas were powered initially by 427 *Tunnel Port* engines that used "side oiler" blocks (there is no such thing as a "side oiler" engine, per se).

No automaker ever built NASCAR race cars/trucks. Not even the engines. All were team built using bare shell factory bodies. After 1987, NASCAR teams built the entire cars.
