The Cubs started 9/3/69, 5 games ahead of the Mets. From Sep 3-15 Mets 12-3 Cubs 1-11 9.5 gb After 9/15/69, the Cubs were 4.5 games behind the Mets.

Jorge Johnson Cubs manager Leo Durocher came from the old school. He wouldn’t rest all his players. Mets had somewhat of a platoon system. They had fresh players. Also, the Cubs didn’t have lights at Wrigley Field. Go figure why they blew it....

Fun year,I was a 12 yr old from Chicago & I was a little bummed out but I rooted for the Mets to win it.amazing series.those Orioles were scary but Agee,Cleon Jones & a good pitching staff made history.

'69 Cubs collapse reminiscent of the Philadelphia Phillies and "The Phold" five years before.

I was at the last game with the Cubs at Shea when they took over first place. My friends and I were sitting in the upper deck in right field near a family of Cubs fans, with one boy wearing Cubs shirt and cap. When the game ended, I glanced over to this family, and they were hanging their heads disconsolately. I felt bad for them, as the Cubs had not won a pennant in many years. But I felt great for me and the 55,000 other Mets fans at Shea that night.

1969 was a great year. Jets currently had the Lombardi trophy. Mets were about to win the World Series, and the Knicks were NBA champs. Great time to be a New York fan

Vic Kreitner it was actually 1970 they won the title. But yes, 1968-70 was a great time to be a New York fan.

In 1969 it was not known as the Lombardy Trophy. The trophy was named after him after he died in 1970.

The first time the nation heard of Nolan Ryan was in the NL Division playoff. Of course, we'd hear a little more of him in the next 25 years.......

Obvious how the game has "changed" for the worse now with the knockdowns and HBP's on 9/8. Notice that in the dugouts and stands that there's no jumping around and charging the mound or the idiotic "warnings". Everybody knew what was happening and stayed calm which shows how much more mature they were ten than now.

Lol, what??? Baseball brawls were MUCH MUCH MUCH more common during the 50's-80's than they are now. It's literally not even close. Talk about making up lies just to suit your "things were better back then" agenda.

both these series are very obscure. Cannot find even partial videos of any of the games on youtube. I realize neither was a great series,but that hasn't stopped other series from being posted. The same is true for the 1974 NLCS-Dodgers vs Pirates,the 1974 ALCS A's vs Orioles The 1975 ALCS A's vs Red Sox and the 1975 NLCS Reds vs Pirates

@simplygu Don't forget, pal... they did manage to defeat the powerful Red machine.. who (in many ways) were considered the most talented in the National League that year.

@ShamWasBetter I disagree. The only reason the Mets won the division in '73 is because it was a down year in the NL East. The Mets won the division that year with a mediocre record of 82-79. Every other year from 1970-1983, the Mets never finished higher than 3rd place & only won more than 83 games one time... 86-76 in 1976. They still were an above average team after the '69 World Series, but finishing in 3rd place or lower for 14 straight years shows they really had things fall perfect in '69.

Orioles should’ve had a trifecta like Oakland in world championships. Should’ve never lost to the Mets and Pirates. On paper they were very dominant squad. The other two teams wanted it more....

@TheAssasin2525 Yeah, they beat the Reds. Kudos! But you still don't get a trophy for losing the World Series. Would they have even been in the playoffs if it weren't for a down year in the NL East? They won the division in '73 with an 82-79 record. There is no argument. Great, they won the NLCS to prove they were a good team in a short series because of their pitching, but they still lost the World Series. Should baseball start honoring the team that loses the World Series with a trophy?
@kennethlund7219
@kennethlund7219 6 лет назад
simplygu from late September on the Mets played great. And if they hadn't suffered so many injuries early on they could have won around 90 games. Still, they weren't really a playoff caliber team. The Pirates had the most talent but they lost Roberto Clemente that off season, which was a tough thing to try to overcome.
@daffyslooney2867
@daffyslooney2867 4 года назад
No one (except you) is arguing the senseless point of "honoring the team that loses a world series with a trophy"! Of course, they lost to the Oakland A's... but it went the full even games-which no one believed was imaginable. The fact that they won with the lowest win percentage... well, instead of bawling the Mets for that statistic, how about blaming the other teams in that division, who were considered much better (on paper) than N.Y.?

The Cincinnati Reds were the best team of the 1970's. Baltimore was next followed by Oakland and Pittsburg. The Mets could not even crack the top 20. By the way every team that wins it's league championship get's a trophy. And it's a very,very big trophy.
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 5 лет назад
Not sure I agree with that. I believe that the Oakland A's of the first half of the 70s were the best team of the decade. After all, from 1971-'75, they won five consecutive AL West titles and joined the New York Yankees as the only other organization to capture three successive World Series, the first of which came at the Reds' expense, despite not having their best player, Reggie Jackson, for the entire series. What's interesting about that decade is that each of the four divisions had a team dominant enough for long enough to win their division in at least half the years in the 70s. The A's won those five division crowns in the AL West, which the Orioles matched in the AL East. Meanwhile, the Reds and Pirates were even more dominant in the National League, each taking six division titles in the 70s. And of course, let's not forget about the late-70s Yankees, which won three consecutive AL pennants from 1976-'78 and back-to-back World Series in 1977 and '78.
