Finally lowering the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with new 1" drop coil springs! The next step in the restoration is to lower the front of the car. I'd like it to be 1" lower in the front and be close to level with the rear.
In this video, I am removing the old coil springs, installing the new coil springs, and then dropping the car to see how much it lowered it.
The video might not end the way you think it does....

Let me know if you have a car project that didn't end up the way you expected it to!

Nice, that is the fastback with the luxury interior right? What engine do you have with it? 351 or the 302?
@NotoriousTorres

@@SmackeysGarage yes that's correct, the guy I bought it from thought it was a mach 1 cause the dash had the emblem.. but the door data plate doesn't lie 😆 It originally had 351 but someone swapped it for a 302 ?? Weird..

Another great vid! I wonder if you had the same problem as I did. The original springs had settled over time, so the new springs may have lowered the car an inch compared to brand new 1969 springs. I read somewhere that a 1/2" on the free coil length is the same as lowering the car 1", so cutting a 1/4 coil at a time like you mentioned is a smart way to sneak up on the ideal height. Also, I like that you measured the compressed coil length when you took the original springs out so you know what the compressed length needed to be when putting in the new coils. :)

Thanks! That sounds about right for the amount to cut off. I probably did have the same problem you did with the settling of the springs. I think what I am going to do is to buy rear lowering leaf springs, see where that settles out, and then determine where I want the front ride height. I would to end up with a slight rake back to front.

You should have checked to make sure that it was a lower spring. And you're out there jacking your car up with no jack stands yanking the car around with your legs underneath and your sandals oh boy

I did check that they were "lowering" springs. Part number was checked as advertised. I believe the original springs were just worn and sagged over time. At 1:30ish I put wood blocks under the rails of the car in front of the passenger compartment. You're right, it isn't safe to ever get under a car or near a car without some sort of support system. Oh, and I like my sandals!

@@SmackeysGarage No I'm working on my 1969 Corvette Coupe, BUT that is also a bit on hold, we are expanding the garage by 10m x 25m right now, we need more space. Right now we are building a small office 2.5m x 5m inside the garage, so we can stay a bit warm when the winter comes. My plan was to start up the Mach 1 again this winter, but I think I will stay on the 69 Corvette all winter. Install engine, transmission, new rear end, factory sidepipes ec ec. And then start on the Mach 1 again in the spring. When all tis is going on, then I also in the process of buying a 69 Chevelle 2 door. Now that is a big project :- )

That's awesome. That is going to be a huge garage! As I'm getting closer to finishing up my 1969 Mustang I'm keeping my eye out for other projects. I might need some tips on managing multiple from you!

1 inch springs do nothing to these cars, they don't work. either cut the springs or get coil overs. I have built 7 mustangs, the 1 inch even the 2 inch springs they sell are useless

Yea I agree you’re better off going coil over to get to the right height. Thanks for chiming in

Yea… I think my original springs were worn so they were already sagging. I’m going to take care of the rear ride height and then figure out where I want the front.

@@SmackeysGarage i used 4 inch blocks for the rear, and cut 2 inches off the springs, I know people say don't cut but i have a very nice ride w no issues at all.

How low is it with four inch blocks? Must be pretty low? I’ll probably end up cutting some in the front too

Its right on the tire, and w flares it covers the tires. Very nice look, but i did have to cut the fenders due to the 2 inch spacers

Sweet. I bet that looked really good. Probably too low for my car though.
