On "My Car Story" we're at the American Motors Owners Association International Convention in Rockford IL on 7-30-16.
We're looking at a 1970 American Motors Corporation AMC Javelin SST Trans Am version with a 390 CI engine in Red White & Blue Paint.
The car’s Owner is Terry McMahon. Terry shares this car is a “Survivor” which is 1 of the original 100 Trans Am versions produced by American Motors. he saw this car advertised for sale in Hot Rod Magazine in 1986 and bought the car. This car features a special paint scheme to match the winning Trans Am cars.
Terry was kind to share a ride in American history, so I said, “Come on with me, you don’t get to ride in 1 of 100 everyday”.

I miss my 68 SST... I almost spent the Xtra money for the AMX but the SST was fast enough for me at that age. My Parents must have thought so also. They sold it behind my back when I went into the Air Force. The story got out about me racing a State Cop and winning, it was his idea and not mine, a family friend. Things were different back in the 70's!

I had a 1968 AMX which I loved. I also had a 1971 Javelin that I drove for 27 years. But I still think that the 1970 Javelin was the best looking of all.

People knock the production quality of AMCs, but every time I see one w/ original paint it always looks remarkably good. Even on the lower end models

AMC had a lot of guys to make these awesome cars. Can you imagine if they put in 4 speed automatic trans, 4 wheel disk brakes, shoulder belts and maybe fuel injection, COULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST MUSCLE CAR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What do you think? I have a 1969 AMC AMX WITH EVERY OPTION AVAILABLE INCLUDING WORKING R12 AIR. NEAL

AMC at that time made cars that often surpassed the qwaulity of the big three they didn't have qwaulity issues until the mid 70s AKA the Pacer witch only had problem s because it got rushed to production but everyone claiming that all AMC cars qwaulity had issues is really unfair

I'm a longtime AMC fan. This is a beautiful car! And a 4-speed to boot! Mechanical Stewart Warner gauges, too. Coincidentally my father and I converted our '68 Ambassador to a hand choke. My father said at the time that it was the best investment we ever made in that car. It solved a lot of problems.

Nascar also ran a road racing series for a few years and Javelins piloted by Jim Paschal and Max Berrier were run. My uncle was one of the engine builders in the High Point, NC shop where the AMC team was located. Always noticed that the shade of red and blue on the factory special edition cars did not match the red and blue on the actual race cars, which had a brighter red and more of a sky or "Petty" blue.

I'm also a Mopar fanatic. I really like the 69 Hurst S/C Rambler and 70 Rebel Machine. The Hornet S/C 360 was a quick little car too. I saw an actual Javelin Trans Am race car at a show one time. The street versions had the 390 but the race versions used the 304. That little 304 in that Trans Am Javelin sounded really mean. The owner said it dynoed at over 500 horsepower. What an awesome car that was. I believe Javelins won the Trans Am series championship in 1971, 72, and 76. AMC was a very underrated manufacturer. The 390/401 was a great engine and those 258 Straight Sixes were practically bulletproof

AMC were the underdogs, compared to the big 3. I love that they did so well in Trans Am. The Javelin/AMX were capable cars. My first car was a trashed '73 Javelin. It was in sorry shape, sadly, but I loved the shape of it, inside and out.

My grandparents had a neighbor who owned a red white and blue javelin. I called it the American flag car. I was around 4 or 5 at the time. The guy at some point bought a Cutlass Supreme and the Javelin was gone. I don't think he ever got rid of the Cutlass. My grandpa always had Chargers and I said he should have an American flag Charger but that of course never happened. Thanks for showing us this car!

I've been a Rambler AMC fan since 65 when my Dad purchased his first brand new car, a 1965 Classis 770. Our neighbour was a shop foreman at an AMC dealer in Montreal Quebec. I remember him coming him over to our house with a brochure of the soon to be released limited Javelin Trans Am. Nice to see someone preserve a piece of history.

In ‘71 my buddy bought one of these (a left over ‘70). His had been repainted by the dealer, but it still looked great. Better yet, it ran like a beast. He kept it for years and eventually sold it in the early ‘90s. I had a ‘Cuda at the same time. Shame we didn’t have the foresight to hang on to them.

Lou Costabile : words of wisdom for sure. Thanks, and please keep these wonderful videos coming. Not only are they greatly appreciated by us baby boomers, but I suspect subsequent generations benefit from viewing them too. They no doubt are helping to explain to those who came after us, what life was like back in the day. Oh and one more thing... while I regret trading in my ‘Cuda in ‘77 (for $900 for Pete’s sake!!!!), another friend had a genuine AAR Cuda which he also let slip away for a similar sum. He probably feels more angst than me. To put things in perspective, it might be interesting to do a video in which you quiz folks to learn how much they paid for their muscle back in the day (and how much they got when they sold or traded). Current generations might be amazed to learn how low actual cost of ownership was in the 60’s and 70’s.

Seriously when I sell my house I want to get another. If I cant source one here (I m a Brit who was working for Dutch Shell back then) and the money is right I might buy one from the states and restore it. Gotta add to the survivors and not just shuffle the few well loved ones around. I might get back to you if that becomes a realistic prospect. I am green with envy seeing you both in that beautiful beautiful car. Thank you for replying. Simon.

In fact, ...Christopher George played a test driver on show "The Immortal".(A great muscle car featuring program.) He was testing a 1969 A M X for a corporation...very Joie Chitwood stuff...ramps, rumble strips, high speed turns. Nice Big Bad Blue .

Isnt it amazing that cars like this beauty dealers had trouble selling back in the day . Yes, it is totally over the top (which is one more reason why we love it). I guess a little much for most people to even consider as a daily driver. The cars no one wanted to buy back when they were new are the very ones we cherish most . I have heard of Plymouth dealers having to take off the wings and nose off Superbirds, tough up the paint and then sell them at a big discount . Can you just imagine !

The spirit of The Hudson Hornet 308 and Doc Hudson is in every Javalin and AMX. (The only reason there was a Javilin and other performance oriented products after decades of dull "practical" cars like the rambler was that after mounting financiall lossses the Hudson faction of AMC became the top cdogs. Prior to this, it had always been the NASH people running the show. Once the fathers of the Hornet took over the priority was performance.....

The general rules governing the Trans-Am series are relatively simple. It is only when one gets specific about permitted optional equipment and the like that the rules get very complicated. Here are some of the general operating rules for the Trans-Am races in 1970: 1970 Trans-Am Rules * The Trans-Am is a manufacturers' championship series in which points for the top six cars in separate over-2-liter and under-5-liter races are awarded to the car manufacturer not the driver (Under-5-liter engine classification which permits a maximum of 305 cu. in. engine displacement). * Points are based on nine points for the winning make of car, six points for the second place auto (provided it is not the same make as the winner), four points for the third place finisher, three points for fourth place, two points for fifth place and one point for sixth place. Only the highest finishing car of each make gets points. * Each manufacturer may count the best nine finishes of the 13 Trans-Am races. The over-2-liter races must be at least one hour and 45 minutes, while the under-2-liter races must be at least an hour in duration. * To be eligible, either 2500 of the same model or 1/250th of the previous year's production-whichever is greater-must be produced. The maximum wheelbase allowable is 116 inches and the minimum weight for the big cars is 3200 pounds with fuel and without the driver. * Competing cars use pump grade gasoline. Class A (over-2-liter) cars are restricted to 22 gallon tanks, while Class B cars may not have tanks over 15 gallons. * Each car must have an onboard starter and start by its own power. Only the driver may repair a car when it stops out on the course, and he may not push the car. * In qualifying, it is the driver/car combination which earns a given time. Times are recorded on each lap for each car during qualifying. * Pressure activated and/or elevated refueling tanks are not permitted this year. Contestants must use an SCCA-approved fueling can. * And, finally, to be considered a finisher, a car must cross the finish line no more than five minutes after the winner has taken the checkered flag and must have completed half the distance of the winning car.

Little history lesson for you all back in the late 60's they were trying to get a car to run 10 seconds in the quarter mile that was stock in the factory the problem was cars with 4700 lbs they couldn't get into the tens with 500 hp engines so amc put a big block in a small midsize car they made 54 cars to make regulations they came with two cams and the second one you installed in the car after you bought it from the dealer and the car would run 10 seconds in the quarter mile. I believe you might need slicks with this set up. So amc has the quickest car of all and it's really know or talked about but i have actually seeing one of these cars a friend of mine had one.
