You got the right wheels, only thing it needs now to unleash the beast is a beautiful set of chrome Hooker headers/side pipes. Those factory manifolds choke-off the exhaust flow of the mighty LT-1. The dyno guy said you lose 35 HP. And Hookers don't leak if installed with the right quality gaskets! Very,Very nice car!
It’s actually sporting some ARH stainless headers now under the ownership of my friend. Yep side pipes are cool until a long legged lady scars her leg for life on a set….Then they aren’t cool anymore!🤣
The LT-1 was a magnificent engine. In the Camaro it was rated at 360 BHP (as stated here the same engine was rated at 370 in the vette)...but the NHRA had the LT-1 rated at 425 BHP for bracket racing.
I gave this car to an old friend who owned the Auto Machine shop that did the motor work....It just went 13.02 @ 109MPH in 2022 at the Drag Strip....Not too bad for being on street tires through the mufflers....It has headers on it now....but, the Bullet (UltraDyne) flat tappet cam is holding up fine with good "Driven" Brand motor oil being used. I was happier to give this "Dinosaur" away to a good friend than to accept a crappy offer from a "Richard Rawlings" imitator when I was selling it in 2018.
@@ejgrant5191 2018 was about the low point in recent LT1 values... there were a large number of cars on the market at the time and I flew out and looked at 3 before I bought an original paint 2 owner LT1 for low 30's back then. It's since been judged in NCRS chapter regional and national topflight 97% and 3 star survivor which I drive often. I wanted original paint interior engine never removed and never apart and I got it from the owner who bought it as a second car when it was 18 months old
My shop teacher in the early 80's had us restoring a 68' convertible and commented on high rpm belt slinging and compressor blow ups when engaged at high rpms....
Truly beautiful ride. My father swapped an LT-1 for the L-82 in his 78' S.A. Back in '79 when he did the swap you could still order the LT-1 as a crate motor. (Block&heads) I remember him coming to pick me up from school with it after he got it going....with open Blackjacks and no hood. lol yeah it was waaaaaaayyyy faster than the L-82.
This Vette is a 1970, there were 3 small block 350 cu/in motors that year 300HP "base" L-48 motor, the great running 350HP L-46 motor and my favorite the 370HP LT-1 motor. Lt-1 will rev quicker than the other motors but, if your not mechanically inclined enough to take care of solid lifter and a Holley 4 barrel, you should look for a 350HP or just build a "stealth" 383 stroker motor.
One of the fastest cars I was ever in was a '69 LT-1. It was a copper coloured hard top in stock trim. That thing was crazy. We were doing 140 mph in third gear in what seemed like 3 heart beats, no fooling! 😎
The camshaft came out late 69 so you could build one and some dealers converted the 350hp cars to LT1. One of the magazines of the day did as well with a cool article on it.
From one LT-1 one owner ('70 Marlboro Maroon coupe w/dark saddle interior), the car shown is also missing its EGR plumbing and associated exhaust manifolds, and it's black chrome shifter ball. My original tires are Goodyear Speedway F70-15.
Just for the record someone screwed up this RU-vid account I had if you have any questions, my new account is 427zoh6 cant recover this account for some reason. Sorry, Eric B
I believe I would just as soon have that 370 horse 350 as opposed to a big block cause it would most certainly drive a lot better. Sure it was plenty of power for that car.
I'm still a bit lost.. It's got all of the quintessential LT-1 parts.. 6500 rpm tach, no fuel return line, and the transistor ignition.. He bought it used in 1979.. Could the dealership have installed the A/C?
My very first used car was a 70 donneybrooke LT-1 with factory M-22 and 4.56!! bought in Montreal in 76 for only $ 3.500.00 but unfortunetly stolen in 82 never to be seen again!!!🤣🤣🤣
My grandpa restored his '71 LT-1 Corvette about five years ago.. He worked his way up in the ranks at a construction materials company, and as celebration for the promotion to assistant chairman, he bought his LT-1. It's Elkhart Green, Saddle Brown interior, Convertible w/ the Vinyl hard-top, and A/C.. He didn't option for the Rally Wheels, so it has the spoked wheel covers. He drove up until it was nearly stolen in 1992.. It sat in his garage until he decided to bring it back to life.
Be sure to check my profile and should see a video of my 72 -LT1, 4 speed and 3.70 hears in mine. Thanks for the reply and I deal with a bit of "run on" with timing and warm weather. Nature of the beast I suppose.
stumbled onto your video trying to find someone doing a dyno on a 72 LT-1, so I could find how much HP they actually had stock. I owned one of the first LT-1s (ordered it and took delivery Feb 1970) and one of the last ones (72 w/AC) that I bought back in the 90s, and I sold Chevrolets back in 71-74. None of us even knew the AC versions were available to be ordered in 72, not unlike Z16 Chevelles. So where did you find some RPO N11 mufflers? :-)
The 70 roadster was the 6th 70-72 LT-1 Vette that I’ve owned in my life….My 1st LT-1 was a 72 C-60 equipped coupe….License plate said AC 72LT1…pain in the butt to adjust pass side valves on #2+4 with that Harrison compressor in the way🤣
Don't know where you can get good repo N11 mufflers but hope whoever is making them stays true to them because those were the best sounding mufflers ever used on a Vette. Available one year only (1968) and man did they sound good on those 11 to 1 big blocks. Heard a 5,000 mile 68 L89 running with those mufflers and just as good as it gets except maybe for an L88. 😀
Thx I'll check that out .... Also the radio u have wat kind is that....? And u changes the tail lights.... Does all 4 lights turn on when u brake and reverse,...?
I am just stating a fact that the 1970,71 LT1 from FACTORY did not have an A/C they did not put them on because the revs were so high it thru the belts look it up.
True but they yielded to pressure and for several month period in late 72 they opened the order banks. Deep groove accessory pulleys, the tachometer off the LS5 with a 5600 redline, the requirement of the M20 wide ratio 4-speed only along with a mandatory 3.55 axle ratio and you could finally get an LT-1 with air conditioning. 😎
Gave the car to my buddy….in 2022 it ran 13.02@107MPH at a vintage car Drag Race in Lodi California….now let’s see your junk! Yep! Just as I thought a collection of junk in a garage! I suspect! My other LT-1 a 72 runs 12.27@118MPH at the drags through the mufflers but, isn’t even a drag car! It’s a championship winning AutoX car….You have no idea of the guy your making stupid statements about. That blue 70 Roadster made a few trips from SF Bay Area to Southern California never missing a beat and getting almost 20MPG with a TKO600 Tremec 5 speed
And on some no radio cars they put the shielding on anyway maybe thinking dealer might install. On the ZR1 almost certainly would not have had shielding.
@@thud9797 I've got a one owner special ordered 71 LT1 ordered without a radio and back where the compartment light rear wall meets the floor there in the pile carpet was a brand new antenna mast in the plastic sleeve. lol 42k miles one owner car with it's original paint and all the paperwork. Must have been SOP for someone on the line to throw an antenna into the back of every car. I forgot to check for all the radio capacitors before putting it in storage a few years ago.
plus as far as i know the lt1 only has one intake to convert from fuel injection to a carb and that isnt it....... i have a built one sitting in my shed the water pump is diffrent too this is not a lt1 just a gen 1 350 with some go fast parts on it
He doesn't know that he thinks the engine is lt1 when it's just the body pretty normal sbc 350 11 to 1 compression or not most 350 were high 10s anyways and could be made 12 or 13 to one by decking the block
That Blue roadster is a 11:1 1970 LT-1....370HP....my 1st LT-1 Vette was a C-60 A/C equipped 72 LT-1....with the 255HP 72 LT-1....ran 14.12@98MPH at Drag Strip...the blue 70 is a solid 13 second ride....My hot rod 72 LT-1 AutoX car runs 12.27@118MPH....would probably run an 11 if I launched it not caring about the differential.
@@JohnSmith-if4et yup on the way they measured power. about all of the manufactures trimmed a smidge of compression off in 71 but still had good cam specs. 72 compression got slashed and cam specs were hit and miss. By 73 cam specs were pretty lame across the board. 70 they started sneaking stuff in. Cars built in west coast plants started showing up with different carb jetting and slower ignition advance. If you notice just about all the performance engines got the manifold stove pipes into the air cleaners. The ultra hipo motors are about the only 70s that escaped the exhaust manifold stoves.
There was some change between 71 and 72, both LT1 engines in those years seemed identical but the net rating in 71 was 275hp and for 72 it was 255hp. Maybe just tuning or Chevrolet lowered the output on paper, don't know.
I'll take the fueler over that any day , way more rpm to work with . I have both my fueler has a tunnel ram on it however ! love your car sounds super nice , you realize power steering was really not an option on a real 370 horse car . They where detuned to help keep the pump alive and the belts on . sounds like you know something about that however , there's the rest of the truth !
Yes Vette did not have power steering or brakes on it.....Its a REAL LT-1 car....my 130lb wife who drives the Vette dictated a swap to a Borgeson steering box.....Good thing about Borgeson is no booster ram so the original 6QT trap door oil pan can remain in place.
NONE of Chevy's solid lifter engines were available with A/C because the compressors couldn't handle the high RPM's the solid lifter engines were capable of. That includes the LT1, L78, L72, DZ302, and LS6. If you see ANY of those with A/C, it is incorrect. If you see any of them with factory A/C, the car is most likely a fake.
72 Corvette LT1`s with A/C could be bought from Chevy with the solid lifters. Chevy made less than 300 of these. The 72 LT1 Vettes that had A/C had a tach that red lined about 5600rpm. Of course all 70-72 LT1 Vettes were four speeds
@@ricksmith7357 Beginning in 1971, Chevy was forced to drop compressio (Fed regulations- smog), they were labled LT1 but with lower compression and mild hyd camshafts, their performance suffered..
They kept the same solid cam thru 72, in 73 they went back to the 69/70 L46 cam, an iron intake and a q-jet to replace the Holley and that engine became the L82 and was rated at 250 net hp, only 5 hp less than the 72 LT1.
And good point on the 64 and 65 327/365hp, that was the first engine that Chevrolet allowed solid lifters to be combined with air conditioning, the other of course being the 72 LT-1 and that was it. They never allowed air conditioning on any solid lifter big block, only these two small blocks.
as for solid lifter Chevy engines with a/c... I've seen a couple midyear L76 (365HP) Corvettes with a/c... but never seen any documentation for them. And from what I can remember, the 72 LT-1 with factory a/c has a 5600 RPM redline instead of the usual 6500 RPM redline.
Nice car! Also to those that posted the '72 was way down on HP, it was rated in Net hp, not gross like the pre 72 cars. The 72 did take a small hit (about 15)in HP due to smog pump and slightly less compression.
+Jason Kubik I own a 72 LT-1 too, the 70 is my wife's car....many dealers in 71/72 ordered their LT-1s equipped with 4.11 gears like my 72 came with to give comparable acceleration to the more powerful 1970 models. The 72 runs fine on pump fuel, the 70 has lowered compression ratio but still isn't happy in hot weather on its 91RON octane premium fuel. I had to teach my wife how to kill "run on" by keeping the car in gear and slowly releasing the clutch to kill the motor on hot days even with a 900RPM idle.
give me the motor pad numbers on right front of motor all of them, print a picture if you can because some numbers are not BLOCKSTAMPED so i can look up your motor .If it has A/C someone put it on .Can you hear the solid lifters when running?
lt1 is a fuel injected 350 ci engine also known as the gen 3 chevy small block the water pump is drivin by the timing chain the cam and lifters are rollers theres no coolant passages in the intake no spot for a mechanical fuel pump.... i seen another video where you called it a zl1 this isnt a super charged ls either known as the lsa just a 350 in a corvette nothing new stop trying to spice it up
Need to do some research before u post gm made the first lt1 in 1970 and put them in the Corvette and z28 Camaro 11 to 1 compression forged pistons forged rods forged crank solid lift cam so he is correct in calling it that
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. Called Bundesabgasbespaßungsverordnung :-(
Look the first generation of 70 LT-1's had a 5 quart oil pan so they couldnt fit the power steering on it but the second batch had a 4 quart pan that enabled them to add power steering they were identified on engine block code by CTR and CTU !! DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION???
Nice 70 LT-1!! but like original wheels better!! And too bad you got a problem starting it??? Why do you have to remove air cleaner on every cold start?? My 70 started on first turn! Get a " grip" on your awesome vette and stop watching you tube videos!!! Most people know shit about LT-1's
It's a 355 because the stock LT-1 IS 350 ci (4.000" bore).. but to do a proper rebuild it usually needs to be bored .030" larger than stock, which adds about 5 cubic inches of displacement.
