My friendHis Dad) had a 70 455. I bought a 70 lemans sport 400 because I liked the GTO so much, Lemans was the best I could do with $$. I know mopar are faster in the quarter. The 455 gto was very fast from 0 to about 90mph. We had 5 in the car and the torque still pushed everyone back in the seat. Effortless power at speeds below 90. I was only 16-18 yrs old. Good memories......BTW thanks for posting this.
Have all original 455 70 GTO it’s not a judge. I’ve owned every year GTO up to 1970. This is definitely my favorite and best looking one in my opinion.
An epic design, that 70 has the sexy lines, great style and the meanest front end!! Pontiac nailed it, when the designers saw the first car roll out they probably did galldang backflips of joy!!!
That 1970-only Endura front bumper is perfect! The '71-'72 Endura looks like it should've gone on the Aztec... That is a beautiful car! Wish you'd make more videos, Campy.
The premier engine for 1970 was the 400 Ram Air V tunnel port 400, crate motor from the dealer. #2 was the production Ram Air IV. No more forged rods available in production engines after the 1963 SD421, in 1970 factory performance was winding down. You could kit up a RAIV or RAV headed 455, and some people did. I put RAV heads on a 455, it was an amazing engine. I used NOS SD455 rods, and forged TRW slugs dished to 9:1CR.
Another rare find in Florida! Jim you should see the rarities over here on the east coast. Talked with an older gent who was the original owner of a Split Widow Vette with AC and only 22K, and still had the original window sticker.
Oldsmobile , Pontiac , and Buick did their own thing with the 455. Olds had the highest power rating with the 455 in the Toranado, Pontiac did their thing with the cylinder heads, and Buick they had the most torque coming in much sooner than either the Olds or Pontiac. It wasn't until 71 that the Pontiac got what it needed in the GTO. The 71 GTO with the 455 H.O. actually out performed the 70 GTO D port 455 . You can find actually footage of the comparison between the two done by Pontiac back in 71 to show case the 455 H.O.
In the beginning of the video you said the car has a 455 HO. To my recollection, the 455 HO came out in 1971, not 1970. So, did you make a mistake, or did the owner put a 1971 or 1972 455 HO in it?
The 70 continued to put on weight, and I believe is a better car, with a 455, rather than the 400, even the RAIII, or IV. That long stroke crank would be needed to move 2 tons of metal easier. At least as a street performer. Super clean car, love the stick shift. Not a fan of the wing, stripes or color combo. But I wouldn't kick it outta bed. :)
The Chevrolet division just hated Pontiac. Chevrolet wanted to be #1 in every category except ultimate luxury given to Cadillac. Anytime Pontiac had something that outperformed Chevrolet, the top brass would put a stop to it. Too bad because Pontiac had some crazy good engineers who loved pushing the envelope. Beautiful GTO! I would have put a 5 gear in it too! 👍
That's all true. They were so jealous of John Delorean and what Pontiac was doing you can write a book on all the crap chevy did to keep Pontiac sales down. From 1963 to the very end of Pontiac. Roger Penske wanted to buy the Pontiac Name and keep the div. going but chevy wouldn't allow that either. Pitiful, chevy's a joke. Always was and is. What have they done in the last 40 yrs? Copy random designs from other makes and throw some of their own half ass shit in. Aways a follower and copier. Never a leader or innovator.
At 2:21 there is a maverick silver metallic '08 or '09 Pontiac G8 behind you. Is that the chase car? At any rate the GTO in this video is a beauty. I love the hood mounted tack. I don't think I'd mind it mounted either way. Love your channel and the content.
@@musclecarcampy9922 That's awesome and reassuring. I know if these cars are well taken care of they should last a long time. I bet I surprised you that I caught your G8 in the background?
Only about 1% of 70 GTOs were built with a rear wing. Why does everyone think they need to add a wing to their car? It ruins the beautiful lines of the car.
It funny by the end of the video, they are talking about the 70's Gas shortage. Now in 2022 the Democrats have the price though the roof. Muscle car days are over for good.
Rodney, you hit the nail on the head. I can't use that same 3 syllable D word that you used, or I'll be shut off, (again), but these cars have been on their way out for years. Only a few die hard collectors can afford them now, and they're old greying, or balding. Kids now-a-days have no interest in anything W/O a computer. Sad. I commend MCC for bringing us these cool car videos.
