My father Ray Conover was the one that filmed this. That's his 1962 Dodge pickup at :58, and 1:23 and that's him looking into the camera at 1:43. LOL! He was a Milltown NJ fireman and they would often help as firemen in the pits and various locations around the race track. He donated this and some other films several years ago to a gentlemen that would go to the firehouse and show old racing video's. I was so happy to find this on the internet. I actually found it about 4 years ago and was able to show it to him before he passed away which was May 2021. He was very happy that people would get to see it. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid and I'm 60 myself now. I sure do miss my Dad but this brought a smile to my face when I ran across this again today! RIP DAD!
I believe 1970 was the only year that NASCAR allowed The Plymouth Superbird with the hemi engine in it. After Petty's sponsored team dominated almost the entire year, Nascar, for 1971, still allowed the car but without the hemi engine.
Imagine what would have happened if the Superbird led to a NASCAR Unlimited division where you could go fast as you wanted. I think the SAFER barrier and the HANS device would have been implemented by 1980, and there would be a lot more road courses on the schedule.
Incredible footage and great race! I always thought petty had 4 wins with the Super bird but I always forget about this race at NJ where he won a 5th time with it! I like races on what I consider the "mini super speedways" like Dover, Pocono, and this one at NJ! With Fords typically winning at most "Major super speedways" in 1970 usually televised on ABC wide world of sports it's really nice to see footage of these VERY underrated tracks as well as with the winged Mopars! This is amazing, it only makes me wish my grandfather had kept the footage he had from the 1970 Carolina 500 at Rockingham, one of the "major" super speedway that wasn't televised on ABC (that I know of) but Richard also won it with flying colors! My grandfather also had footage of 1970 Atlanta 500, and Dixie 500, both won by wing cars with Bobby Allison winning at the "Atlanta race" and Petty again at the "Dixie race" both of which I have not found footage for (besides my grandfathers) again much thanks for sharing this historical footage!
