seeing that converse launched the 70s , though asian version, makes me feel so proud of my true vintage early 80s made in usa pairs. which are pretty much the same as the 70s version, thick canvas, extra stiching and inner canvas, thick outer soles , thick laces, they just seem to last forever
I just got a pair of the black high top 70's. The patch on mine is an actual sewn on leather patch, but instead of the normal blue star and red writing on white background, it's a black star and black writing on white background, which is what's on the Chuck II's
Yeah, they switched the All*Star patch on the 70’s somewhere between mid to late 2018 from the Iconic Red White & Blue printed on patch to a more “premium” embossed leather patch that’s just in black and white since the Chuck 70 is the “premium” Chuck. Of course that’s up for personal taste and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I much prefer the old school iconic patch over the leather one that is used now. The Chuck 70s really had a good thing going between 2017 to late 2018 when they changed the back heel tab from just plain words “Converse All*Star” like what you see here on his early red pair of 70s to the retro heel tab they use nowadays that is on all modern (and yours) pairs with the big star in the middle and two little stars one each on the bottom right and bottom left but they kept the Red White & Blue classic ankle patch. With this they looked almost identical and true to Era. But alas, as with everything, nothing gold can stay, and after late 2018 they started using the leather patch straying the shoe from its classic roots and heritage.
I just bought my husband a pair for almost €100. The price hurt, but I've heard it's worth it. Does kinda make me mad though cause if you think about it, it just shows how good they CAN be but aren't. The normal ones wear out within 6 months with every day wear. They are screwing us so we have to keep buying new ones if we want converse!
Hey dude! I've just found that the Japanese version of converse isn't owned by Nike, it is instead made by another company in Japan, the shoe and everything is made in Japan and Is about the same price of a converse Jack Purcell and I bought some. BEST. SHOE. EVER. It has THE BEST ARCH SUPPORT EVER and it is so comfortable! I love EM!
radio1342 I can attest that the made in Japan converses are incredible!! I’m Japanese -American and I lived in both US and Japan (currently in Japan) and I tried all: Regular cheap Chucks, 70s model, and the made in Japan model. Those made in Japan, while pricy, do last long and you can tell the quality is on point; the materials, the canvas, the metal, the rubber and the way it’s made is so on point and it was thicker than the regular chucks. When compared to he 70s and Japan, I gotta hand it to the made in Japan model as the canvas really support you. But that being said I do like the shiny vintage finish on the 70s. The company that owns converse in Japan is actually a company called: Moonstar and they make a lot of shoes in Japan for many occupations and even students, but their vulcanized sneaker lines is just incredible. I think there’s a revival of classic Americana in Japan right now and high quality vulcanized sneakers are on demand. I think it also helps their production as they make limited numbers for their made in Japan models.
Converse Japan is doing Converse right! All of their core classics in hi top and low tops are just how they were made before Nike bought them out (how you would find Converse shoes in stores between 2002-2004). They still have the Registered ® symbol under the star on the ankle patch and under the star on the heel license plate. The bottom sole is ONE piece with NO FELT glued to the bottom. That’s the classics... Now a step up in premium the “Made In Japan” line looks really nice! They look just like pairs from the early 80’s. I tried to buy some direct from the Converse Japan website, but it don’t look like they do international shipping, how did you get your pair?
when he said “these are nickel” as he was pointing at the little circle for the laces i was expecting him to say “and those are dime” when he pointed it out on the other shoe
I didn't know about the 70s version until recently and might give converse another chance. Truly Idk how people can wear the standard common ones all day even to theme parks they feel like you're stepping on nothing
I'm dating myself here but from 1970-1972 our high school basket ball team all wore Converse All Stars. The grip on the bottom was exceptional, even in gyms that were not that dust free. Being a teacher and wanting to get back to recreational basket ball, can anyone tell me if the grip on the new shoes is as tenacious as the ones from the '70's. Thanks much!
+Kenneth Argent Well, I really don't know. The bottom of the shoe IS a better grade of rubber than the modern shoe. But I have yet to test it on the court, I wore them yesterday and they are comfy. If I get a chance I will wear them to church and try them in the gym to see how they do on the court.
Great comparison bro.. converse company these days making a bull shit pair of chuck taylor with low quality product and selling it with higher price. Good video bro
They should really make the Chuck 70s in America, similar to how PF Flyers make their premium Centers in the USA. I’d be more willing to pay 80 bucks, or even $100 for them if that was the case.
Same. I think they should too, but that's just not how Nike is unfortunately. :/ But I'm glad New Balance still makes shoes in America, just wish they were a bit cheaper...
I bought the $150 premium PF Flyers. They are pretty awesome; my only complaint is that the little green PF Flyer logo on the back, fell off the first day i drove em. (These are handmade in Boston,MASS.) I have both the Converse Chuck II, and the re-enforced Chuck originals. By far though, the PF Flyer Sandlot (All black) are the most comfortable shoes i own. And at $40-$50 per pair, i usually get a new pair every other month. Thank you for doing a review on a real old school Chuck vs. the newer editions. Amazing how much of a difference a Made in the USA product is versus non-US made products.
+JLYNX CAM Had been wondering about the Made in USA PG Flyers. I have been wanting to try out the Chuck II but right now I have plenty of shoes and lately have just been wearing flip flops when not at work. At work I am required to wear steel toe boots. So right now my red Chuck's are still pretty much brand new and I hesitate to buy any more of the lower grade $50 ones like the black ones. My blue PF's are still in good shape too so with me only wearing tennis shoes on the weekend it will be a while before i need some new ones. My next pair will probably be the Chuck II. May have to try the Sandlot shoes at some point.
No, the PF Flyers are a bit wider. Both are comfortable. A few years later and I still wear all the shoes in the video but the black ones are now the ones I use to mow.
@@radio1342 Do you wear the same size for both the Converse Chucks and PF Flyers Center Hi? I know Chucks fit large compared to TTS. Relatively, I hear some people say that PF Flyers fit small compared to TTS.
And 5 years later, Nike is screwing with the 70s formula: changing the build from vulcanized to cupsole, changing the eyelet mold, changing the tongue material to even thinner canvas. WTF Nike? You're not staying true to the original.
This is why I dislike Nike as a company. I've avoided consuming from them at all cost but it is a shame that Converse is owned by them. Everything from quality to the overall look has decreased thanks to Nike's greed.
Bought them on sale for $42 on 6pm site (zappos own them) then price dropped $26 days after I ordered it. Asked them to match that price and it worked. Score!
Oh hey i have a question about the size of chuck 70, i am curently wearing the regular chuck low top with the size 7.5 men, so if i buy chuck 70 low top, should i get the same size?
Would've loved to go to Jerry's but it was 5 miles from where I was downtown. Too far to walk. I did walk to Eide's Entertainment tho and bought several records. Would've bought more but records don't travel very well on a plane as carry on!
radio1342 I hear you there what state you in just curious I have never been on a plane yet and it's funny I have never we ever checked out Eid ES and that's not too far from where I work
+oyhe94 The 70's (or what is called Premium Chuck's on the website) have a better insole. It is a lot thicker and softer. So yes, the premium ones are more comfortable.
Hey I was just wondering, how is the fit in the 1970's? I was thinking of buying a pair of them but im just stuck on what size I should grab. Do they both fit the same? Im a 9 in the normal retail store chucks of today. Should I also grab a 9 in the 1970's? Any help is welcome! Thank you!
They fit the same. Mine are 10.5. Same fit but better feel. Sometimes you can find them 70's version on sale. I am still wanting to try the Chuck II, I hear they fit and feel even better.
+radio1342 Ah alright! Thanks alot man! Yeah I'm hoping I find a cheaper pair online. I'm down in Canada and the only pairs I can find here are 80-100+ a pop, sadly. Yeah the chuck II's must be with that Nike insole.
+Ken Argent Tried them out on a gym floor and they seem to have better traction that a "basic" pair of Chuck's. Granted I didn't play basketball, just tried them out a bit. The bottom of the premium shoe is a better grade of rubber. My suggestion would be try one pair for yourself and see how the work. However, I know school like to wear school colors and these only come in black, red, white and I think yellow/mustard.
They havent been made in USA since 2000 or 2001. All of them are now made overseas. The pair I have that are Made in USA are from 1992 and are a bit different so they really can't compare to the 1970 Converse. But they have lasted this long so that says something.
@@radio1342 perhaps since the material didn't have as much time to degrade before it was formed for the show may have something to do with it. As for why it's no longer in the us, just economics of that it's way more expensive to live in the us versus Vietnam and it's cheaper for Converse to get them made there = higher profits. If it were made here, which would be nice, they'd probably cost in the neighborhood of $100 for the standard ones which includes the actual cost + the usual bump in price "made in the USA" would add for marketing.
It's been a while, I have had mine for 4 or 5 years and they had been out for a while before I ordered them. I found the red ones on discount, I think marked down to 50 bucks or so, don't remember
Hey radio! I found a pair of red 1990's chucks (made in the USA of course) and its in mint condition for 50 dollars, and I'm wondering which converse is better the 70's chucks made in Indonesia or the made in the USA 1990's chucks
Really no idea. I have a pair of 1992 Made In USA's and the 70's Chucks from overseas are actually better made. Better rubber and materials but they are using what they used in the 1970's. By the 1990's Converse was cutting back using lower grade rubber and thinner insoles. In insoles of my 70's Chuck's are much thicker than any other pair I have owned (but the insoles of the Chuck 2's are the best insoles ever). You really found a steal, 50 bucks can't beat it. Take care of them and they will last a long time!
+Shawn Kim PF Flyers are very well made. I still have the same pair and they are now a couple of years old. I like the construction of the 70's All Stars better but the PF Flyer is a good shoe and you can normally find them on sale on their website. Would like to buy a pair of the Made In USA PF's but they are pretty expensive. The canvas on the new 70's All Stars and the ones that are over 20 years old now is a thicker canvas. Check the PF Flyer website they normally run some pretty good deals. Same with the 70's All Stars, look around online and you can find them on sale on the Converse site or other shoe sites.
Ha. I was watching this video for fun because im waiting my my black 70s chucks to arrive and i am wearing those exact same pf flyers right now (love them) i also cant find the red ones in my size(13) anywhere
Yeah....I learned the hard way and screw that "Chucks Connection" site. That is where I ordered my mono black canvas lo and my leather mono black hi's. Those leathers started separating at the seams after Eight Days!!!! And it was simply eight days at home ......walked to the garbage dumpster and the mailbox. Other than that I sat on my porch! I emailed him ..."Chuck's Connection" and got the blow off. I had to get a tube of "shoe goo" and cover the entire bottom. There was so much crap on his site little did I know for the extra coin I could have got the better shoe. I should have known.....pissed me off the way he handled it via email.....sonabi@#h! That is the last monies he will ever get from me and my black mono lo canvas are pulling apart too. I wondered why my foot was wet, I'll spring for the 70's specs (through my Converse store) but if they do the same thing I am done and on my way to the PF Flyers. ~`Do Not Deal With Chucks Connection `~ they are shitty shoes. I should post them on my IG account. Bas#@rds!
MrPocketfullOfSteel I have never bought from Chuck's Connection, I was only referring to it as a good reference site on the history of the shoe. But as for buying, I would only buy from a retailer (shoe store, Amazon, Converse.com).
MrPocketfullOfSteel I didn't know you could order shoes from there...thought they only provided laces and photos/history of converse all star....I usually do eBay/stores/footlocker......been looking @ converse.com.
Ita not ironed on, it's paint I tried to peel it off, but it was impossible I had to use nail polish to remove it and it didn't work, I had to use sandpaper for 20min to completely remove.
