The Spaniards were good workers and didn't cause any problems but they had to get the Turks , Moroccan and other north Africans because to the Spaniards they had to pay the same as to the native Dutch. No country has or ever had a shortage of labour what they have and always had was a shortage of cheap labour.

The same tripe that all the multi nationals and big businesses roll out, like automaton. “The Dutch/English/Germans/French insert nation here, won’t do the work etc etc. Total rubbish. What it means is the employers don’t want to pay the workforce the right money for the job, as it impacts their bottom line and profits. So they import slave labour at a fraction of the cost. Inferring that the indigenous Europeans are lazy is not only rubbish and false, it’s insulting.

That was really interesting. It revealed many of the problems with the attitude which is the ruing ideology today, that a worker is a worker is a worker. The politicians want to maintain growth at any cost, and dump workers from quite a different culture into the poorest parts of a European city, and accuse the locals of racism when they protest. The next lie is that the locals don't want to do the dirty jobs. The locals have always done the dirty jobs, but if the wages paid are too little to keep a family running then they will not do them. The enemy of the working people of the Netherlands is not the foreign labourers but the politicians and capitalists who recruit them. Europe 50 odd years on is heading towards a stormy decade or two as the native populations begin to see through the lies.

Rotterdam - as shown on this film, at least, - resembles an English town of the same vintage so much that it is uncanny.

Unfortunately these migrants from Turkey, Algeria, Morocco are just culturally different to Europe because of Islam. Even so, if they followed the tenets of any European country they’d do rather well. But if you import the prejudices from back home, then Europe will strike.

Fascinating piece of history from my year of birth and the place where I work and live now, Rotterdam. Even more fascinating because what is going on on Dutch society and politics right now is for a large part a result of what was going on with migrant workers and immigrants. This process is still happening, with polish, lithuanian, bulgarian, latvian lisence plates all over the streets here especially in the traditional workers´ parts of town. The MOST fascinating is that for the left orientated part of society (labour party - greens - socialist) it is just incomprehensible (they are even arrogant about it and in denial in some cases) that it is the children and grandchildren of those turkish and some moroccan migrant workers who are now started to support Geert Wilders and joined forces with right wing Netherlands groups because their nice quiet neighbourhoods are under pressure of non-western migrants who are roaming streets and stealing in shops outside the asylumseeker centres etc. It is not only about our Dutch-ness under threat but in general a feeling of being less safe, not protected by goverment and totally unclear path of (growth?) of ILLLEGAL immigrations. ILLEGAL immigration should be avoided at any cost by enforcing the EU borders. EU borders are not enforced and we should help our South European EU fellows to stop those boats. just like we all understand why finland and baltics and poland close the border to russians right now.

Most of these Turks are whiter than Spaniards but the Dutch prefer Spaniards due to closer cultural affiliation (even as there is unpleasant history of Spain ruling the Netherlands). Which goes to show that values, culture and religion tend to play a larger part than race. Not in all cases but certainly here.
