Two years after this show went out Thatcher was elected and started flogging off millions of council houses on the cheap - but then didnt allow councils to use the money from the sales to replace their housing stocks (shamefully this continued under major - and the blair lab govt). Decades later we've got a massive housing and homelessness crisis

So true

The report shows the housing crisis was pretty much apparent in 1977 under a Labour gov who had censored the report.. instead of knocking it, appreciate it was a wonderful thing that the working class who had been paying rent all life with no chance of ever buying a home, were suddenly given a chance to own the home (on the cheap) that they had cherished for years under Thatcher..who was more for the working class than Labour could ever be, Labour actually despises the working class and always had done, according to Labour they have too much lip and should know their place which is under their control.

The housing crisis was caused by NIMBYs, and councils refusing planning permission for new housing.

@@buddha1736 That’s admirable. One of the downsides of individualism is that when you draw attention to the intended consequences of it people react with hostility. When your sense of self has such a narrow focus, anything that questions it and forces you to look at the world beyond yourself feels like a personal attack.

@@VeggieBackGarden In many ways it's been a great success. Places like Hackney have been revived with more private renters spending their higher incomes locally. Having so many low income and socially challenged people living in one place is a disaster. We still have far more council than housing the rest of Europe.

Messrs Grundy and Rossi in conversation - that could have been from a script for "Yes, Minister" (and I say that with respect) 😉 By the way, ancient Britons of March 1977, be careful out there - 19 degrees (C)..! Phew, you're all going on a Summer holiday! Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

No sh*t, the majority of people would rather invest their money in bricks and mortar than pay rent. I guess the majority of people would rather own a Rolls Royce rather than a Hillman Imp. The problem is they couldn't afford it. The financial system promised everyone that if they got into debt enough they could all be home owners. The result was the 2008 financial crash which the world has never fully recovered from. Now a so-called "affordable' house, (arbitrarily defined as a fraction of market prices, not by incomes), in London would require you to earn over £70,000 a year, more than twice the median average income. On top of this there is no social housing stock left.
