1970s reality TV sent strangers into the wild to survive | RetroFocus

Long before Survivor, a TV reporter and a group of strangers were sent into remote wilderness with limited supplies for two weeks.
Armed with a bag of oats, and the bare essentials - a knife, axe, torch, billycan, string, length of wire and box of waterproof matches - the six participants were filmed as part of a rare (at the time) TV experiment.
The ABC caught up with Beverly and Greg Mead for their reflections on the experience 44 years later: tiny.cc/pc4v5y
'A Question of Survival' aired on ABC's Four Corners program on 8 November 1975.

the problem with this is these people were probably selected for the pleasant demeanors. Imagine if the next time you traveled by plane, you are stuck with random 1/2 of the people on the plane in a survival situation. How many of those people would be pleasant? how many would mirror the worst of modern reality tv?

They've got a few things going for them that current reality TV casts don't: 1. They only have to make it two weeks. 2. They haven't been given some dumbass "goal" they have meet; they just have to survive. And 3. The footage hasn't been edited to play up any conflicts, most of which were trumped up by the production team in the first place.

This was a real experiment, an experience for the participants. It was documented, not made to become entertainment. (or was it? It's definitely much harder to speculate) TV today is custom made, and precisely tailored to bring entertainment value and generate Ad revenue. I think the early years of youtube kinda felt like this program, and now they have found the formula. Perhaps the livestreaming wave reaching popularity will also become a tailored experience, much like the fate of "reality" TV in the early 2000's. Do you think there is a medium that cannot become artificial?

Without a doubt, vastly more informative due to the nature of its completely neutral and unbiased perspectives. We can trust its findings and its conclusions. It was made in a far more discerning and stern era where objective observation was placed above all else. THIS very aspiration is what has advanced us beyond such meagre hunter/gatherer ways of living. This has been COMPLETELY abandoned today in exchange for phony entertainment, theatre and a hijacking of logic, calling something 'science' when it is just bought and paid for dogma coming from a scientist. If this is not stopped URGENTLY, we will soon find ourselves hunting and foraging for food - if we are allowed to leave the prison cities that is. God help us all, and bring us back to Truth, which was the foundation of such an excellent production as this program.

Everyone of them will be completely alone. Its called 7 vs wild, and i am pumped for it! Camera and night filming equipment, a cellphone for emergencies and a first aid kit wont count as those 7 things, everyone gets that because its needed to film it and to make sure nobody dies. I hope he will add english subtitles for u english guys too eventually. But in sweden, without having a license, no hunting is allowed, only fishing. And there is a potential for moose, wolf and bear encounters in this part of sweden. ^^

I am going to share a story with you. Whether it is true or not, YOU must decide. I think THIS video is a great example. People, in general, just want to get along. WE need food and water, shelter from the elements, clothing, air, and some company. If we have all of those. We can thrive. When television was invented, like everyone else who makes things, the TV makers wanted everyone to own a TV. The problem was, these manufacturers were wanting to sell these TVs to a large population who still made a living farming. ( 1925). What farmer is going to let their kids sit around and watch TV when work is to be done? They needed a reason to entice these people into buying one. They started making shows that were all about learning good lessons. They always showed the stereotypical family with a picket fence etc. The shows were all about morality and learning new, wholesome things. Farmers began letting their kids watch tv after the chores were done etc. Since the TV was always spouting some terrific new idea or positive sounding thing, everyone bought into it and after years and years, a TV was in every home. After that, they concentrated on getting a TV into the bedroom. They started making Racier shows for the adults to watch after the kids went to bed ( at like 7 pm lol) ( we laugh at how innocent some of these are now by today's standards). After they had 2 or 3 tvs in every house. Then the programming began to get darker and darker, they realized the money they could make advertising. So many studies have been done on how much TV influences society. I would bet a million dollars ( if I had a spare milli lol) that if, over time, all of the media makers slowly started changing all of the movies back to things that are all positive and if they showed characters on TV and in movies with good , moral character , that our country would begin to move to an area where morality would improve and crime would decrease. It took 30-50 years to change it to what it is now. WE could change it to something else in another 30 just by changing the programming ( they call it programming? I wonder why ?). Peace

Let me recommend u an upcoming "real" show: This late summer, the german suvival youtuber fritz meinecke will do such a project, 7 days, 7 youtubers, that can choose 7 things (food isnt allowed) into the wilderness of sweden. ^^

@@notgonnalie1846 Ur right. I was born 1994, and raised nearly completely without television. (1 of 2 Grandparents had some, but not parents, and i wasnt staying with my grandparents that often, because they lived 50km away.) Because of that, i despise Advertisement. RU-vid has become my television. Any format i am interested in from regular tv can be found here too.

@@robertbretschneider765 Well, that's nice for you. I will tell you real quick what I think OP meant(if Im not totally wrong): Two things, 1. people themselves were different, they were way more 'normal' compared to today. Just simple, decent people who wouldn't even have thought about making this whole project about themselves, their own personality. 2. The setup of the show itself was very honest. No faking anything, no manipulation of the whole situation. They just let the participants do what they would do and filmed it, no interference to make it more 'interesting' etc. It's hard to find anything like it even (or especially nowadays) on youtube. Youre right insofar, that often enough there is no production company behind things, pulling the strings. On the other hand, every single youtuber is encouraged to be their own fking company, aiming at clicks/views and the money they earn through ads, shoutouts etc from their sponsors. Ofc you can argue, that it wouldnt even be realised without it but this is exactly the thing you know: TV since, I dont know, the 90s or mid 80s, as well as youtube today, has the intent to manipulate you. It's capitalised and well planned to the core. But 'old television', at least often enough, had no other intention but to show smth 'as is', without guiding the whole thing towards the desired outcome. From this perspective, youtube is as far away from the 'old' approach to simply show something honestly, to allow you to make your own conclusions, as it possibly can be. It's all about gaining your attention in order to make money.. Btw, wir sind Landsmänner denke ich ;)

@@notgonnalie1846 Korrekt! ^^
