In this episode of Streets by Vice we head to Las Vegas, Nevada and delve into life beyond The Strip by way of Charleston Boulevard, the city’s longest street running east to west.
Charleston Boulevard spans the length of the city’s surprising and unique history. In the suburbs on the east end of Charleston you might come across a few Mormons, who were some of the first people to settle in Vegas. On the west end of Charleston you will find relics of the casinos established by the Chicago Outfit, aka the infamous Italian mob. Without the influence of these groups some say Las Vegas would look more like a truck stop than the glittering city it is today.
While Vegas is widely known for The Strip's extravagant parties and countless pleasures, there’s a culture and community growing off of the Strip for the locals who call this desert oasis their home.
In the downtown area of Charleston Blvd a wave of entrepreneurs are establishing new businesses, providing jobs, and generating more activities and attractions for the local community. This kind of progressive development is drawing more people to lay down roots in the city, and is changing the popular mindset of Las Vegas as just a place to “get away.”

I've lived in Vegas since 2005 and this is still not the Vegas that I know. Every show about Vegas, only focuses on the strip and the more seedy parts of town. You never see them out west in Summerlin, down southwest in Southern Highlands, over in Henderson or up in the northwest in Providence. People still don't have a clue about the side of Vegas outside of the strip. The vast majority of local never go anywhere close to the strip. Only when friends or family come visit, and then you're just as big of a tourist as they are because you never go down there either! It's two different worlds. There's VISITING Vegas and then there's LIVING in Vegas. It's like night and day. Everybody always says "I don't know how you live here man, I couldn't do it!" Then I tell them that locals don't deal with the strip and they have no clue what else you would do in Vegas if you don't go to the strip......SMH. Outside of the strip it's a normal city. It's the cheapest major metropolitan area to live if you want to be on the "west cost". It's like living in Phoenix, but with a strip.

You are right my friend. Ive lived here since 06. Us locals know not to go down to the strip unless you want to see a band or something. Tourist forget that people do live here. Have jobs and dont gamble. I always laugh when I see ppl over pay down on the strip for beer and food..And all that you have to do is drive or cab at least a mile away and prices are lower..We will see with new raiders stadium being built. How it will look..

I like your post but I disagree with some of your points. Living in Las Vegas is far different from just Phoenix with a strip. The laws, industry, and simply the "Las Vegas" culture is deeply ingrained in the city, and no other place can match it.

Love that they did a feature on our town. Tragically omitted from this, though, are areas like Summerlin and Henderson, which are critically important hubs in their own right and very much a part of the story. This is "Vice" after all.

I lived in Vegas for 12 years. People just talk about the strip. They have the best places to eat. The malls are nice they have beautiful houses. Very diverse melting pot of different races. I know alot of good people there.

Because it's VICE. They have long become corporate sell-outs than the way they reported at their beginnings. Like any corporation, when it grows, it grows away from its core principals. Chik-Fil-A is one of those which hasn't.

As with most Vice articles, they started with a good idea and never followed through. For all her talk about Charleston Blvd she spent most of her time off of it. She might has well have focused on Las Vegas Blvd because, with the exception of the Mormon temple and Brothels (the latter of which having next to nothing to do with Las Vegas), she spent no time on Charleston Blvd. I think it was good that she addressed Zappos and the downtown "revitalization" but, if her goal was to focus on locals and the "real" Las Vegas, she sorely missed the mark.

It's been far too many years since I've been to Vegas. From a time when I would go 5, 6...8 times a year...at least. When you go that often you make friends with locals and it's THAT, that makes the difference! Going back to the mid 70's thru the early 2000's. What a HELL of a time! almost accurate. East Charleston is up at Sunrise Mountain. Gorgeous. beautiful homes. but to get there you do need to drive through some poor parts of town along East Charleston, though not the worst part, that would be around D Street and Martin Luther King Dr. Then West Charleston you have Summerlin, but beyond that it goes to gorgeous Calico Ridge, Red Rock Canyon, Spring Mountain, Bonnie Springs, The quaint little village of Blue Diamond. also, Charleston doesn't take you to any brothels East or West. that was a load of hog wash made up by the fake investigative journalist that put this piece of propaganda fluff together.

Lived in Vegas for one year right off of Tropicana and Spencer. I stayed for one year until i woke up to my car being stolen and thought oh no, I"m outta here. Moved to BOulder city and stayed for 15 years . I have been on Charleston Blvd and it's a dangerous place to be as is most of the East side

My first place was behind the San Remo. I worked at the Excalibur and could walk to work. It was a good location as you could go either east or west. But, as the city began to grow the Strip area became more and more congested. I never ignored it but would go there for a concert or something but for the most part I found plenty to do in the rest of town.

Born & raised in Vegas and this documentary was honestly the worst. You can’t say your doing a ‘local based’ documentary and than go off for like 1/3 of the screen time talking about a place over a hundred miles away. This would have been a really great opportunity for them to highlight local festivals (like the Aloha festival or first Fridays) local communities (like the strong Latino & Filipino communities), to talk about local businesses & not some new guy that most of local residents don’t even like bc ya know GENTRIFICATION. Also The ‘clean up’ downtown project was already going way before mr. Zappos showed up

I agree, too bad a lot of people noticed and the traffic in some parts is horrendous compared to a few years ago. Henderson was practically a ghost town back when I first moved here in 2004. Now it's hell during rush hour and there's houses built in huge open lots that were empty for years.

I was stationed out there for four years and never ate at El Sombrero. After seeing their food, I’m VERY sorry I missed it, along with the disc golf courses in that valley. At least I found some great dives and the BEST Thai restaurant in the state while there. Pissed I only found the Pinball hall of fame less than a month before leaving. This was such an intimately detailed segment of the real Las Vegas that tourists just don’t usually ever see. Great work Vice, and Brava, Charlet.

I was born and raised here in Vegas-my family moved here in the mid 50’s. Just like any city we have rich and poor areas. The majority of locals don’t go to the strip not gamble. She failed to show the city at large going along with their daily lives.

We used to drive up there from San Diego in the Navy in the late Nineties, I never thought of it as seedy. I grew up in an Appalachian trailer park and it was way more shady. I liked Las Vegas, I'd love to see it again.

Me too, although I live in the Green valley area now, kinda a different world. I miss old Vegas, it was safer when the mob ran it, they took care of gangs. My Mom knew the Spilatros , mainly the dentist brother and spent Christmas Eves with their Mother.

Las Vegas was named after Spanish traveler Antonio Armijo, 60, who arrived there while following an old Spanish road from Los Angeles, California in 1829. At that time, in some low-lying areas of the Las Vegas Valley, (Los Prados ) there were springs that create extensive green areas that contrast with the desert that surrounded them where there was spring water in abundance for western travelers; hence the name "Las Vegas". The year of 1844 marked the arrival of John C. Fremont officer and explorer of the US Army traveled to the valley of Las Vegas on May 3, 1844. Eleven years later, LDS Mormon leader Church Brigham Young sent a group of 30 missionaries to Las Vegas to build a church halfway between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles where he would travel to convert the Indian population and gather supplies. . The Mormons left the area in 1857

I lived in North LV for summer and worked on the strip. Never went to the strip outside of work. I loved living in Vegas! Huge community and my house was great. Only downside was working on the strip, which is why I left.

It's not a slippery slope. It's not one thing leads to another without a known causal relationship. There is a direct measurable causal relationship between prohibition and violent illegal activity, so it's not a slippery slope argument to say that prohibition will lead to illegal activity. Doubly true for something that's already currently being done illegally. Go do yourself a favor and google "slippery slope" and then think really hard please.

What a puff piece. Supposedly about Charleston Blvd and you spent 99.9% of the time anywhere, but on Charleston. Brothels at the end of Charleston? There isn't a legal brothel within 60 miles of either end of Charleston. The closest ones would be over the mountains in Pahrump. Having grown up in this city, starting about sixty years ago, and within half a mile of west Charleston, I can say, without a doubt, this story has nothing to do with Charleston and it's history.

There’s so much more to my town. I call it that because I was born and raised here. I knew Anthony Spilatrro as a kid. He lived across the street from my uncle. And my cousin was best friends withAnthonys nephew. Spilatro was very nice to us kids. We never knew who he really was until we were adults. I wish they would’ve touched on the nicer areas of Charleston Boulevard going into Summerlin. They should’ve Vegas as a whole and went to every single part of town to show the diversity that we have here

This was a terrible report. This is a city of two populations--the tourists and the locals. The tourists give Vegas the bad reputation. The locals are very giving people. When the MGM fire happened, the locals brought food, clothing, and others things to the fire victims. When the TV program was here to re-do a house for a family, so many people showed up that the producers had to send many people home, Nice try, but the brothels are in another county. Mandalay Bay is far from Charleston Blvd. As for "normal", the locals are just like any other community except many movies, bowling, and dining are often in hotels. Do your homework. This was a giant misrepresentation of Vegas.

I should've read the comments first. I came here to reminisce about the childhood I had in Vegas. I lived just off of Charleston on the east side, but this ain't about that. This is about the strip, and gambling, and prostitution, as always. Btw, if you wanna do a bit on the gambling problem for Vegas locals, don't look at the strip, look at places like Sams Town, or any of the Station Casinos, that's where the locals go to throw away their money.

As others have chimed in, Charleston (State Road 159) doesn't even go out to the brothels, in either Pahrump or Amargosa Valley where the host visits the brother. It goes out to Red Rock Canyon, then starts heading South, and ends at Blue Diamond (State Road 160). I wish they would've just stayed on Charleston the whole time because the road is VERY diverse from East to West. I liked Vice's Streets episode in LA of Sunset Blvd, because it showed the diversity a bit more. But even the Sunset episode flew by all the SUPER expensive areas, only really showing the gritty side of Sunset and the surfers.

Growing up in vegas in the 90's was pretty cool saw some awesome shows at the huntridge theater. Vegas was crazy back then and it had a different feeling back then only if you grew up here u know what i mean the city feels colder these days if that makes sense

I used to leave there. It is the worst place I've ever lived and I have lived all over the country from Los Angeles (where I am from and grew up) to South Carolina. It is the only place I've been to worldwide that has no soul. Lad Vegas is where the devil's lives. I felt complete emptiness while living there.

I literally moved here 4 DAYS ago and I already can tell how inaccurate this video is....I was incredibly shocked to find that Vegas is wayyyyy more than just the strip. The whole city is beautiful, the mountains are like a surreal backdrop, and the neighborhoods are so unique and interesting. I would have enjoyed seeing a local's perspective so I could better understand my new residence, but this felt random and boring....and it's really not at all as "Casino! Sex! Booze!" as I thought. Not even close.

Welcome to Las Vegas! I've lived here over 20 years ... it has changed a lot in that time, but it has ALWAYS been more than the strip. In fact, in my years here, I can count on two hands the times I've been there. The foothills of the mountains rock! Maybe pun intended ... :)

My dad moved us to Henderson to get out if the shit hole called LA. Downtown is nasty just like any city but there is tons of amazing beauty here. It most certainly is not the dirtiest city ever. Been to Frisco lately? My daughter is flourishing here straight As good head on her shoulders. PLEASE don't put one blanket over all who live here. What u are saying is simply untrue. It's a city full of suburbs with schools and rec. Centers and libraries and all that. I'm a member of the PTA. I promise u not everyone here is a stripper or gambles. And yeah it's hot but guess what we still have grass. I have a backyard full of it real grass that my happy dog shits on everyday. Most people here besides the ones addicted to gambling are very happy and humble people. Also I lived in Boulder City for a while that's where I work at the dam and it's beautiful no gambling and it's an amazing little town. Again pls don't categorize all of us into one big pile, the majority of residents are just raising their families and want the best for their kids just like any other city.

I’m so confused and maybe even a little let down by what could’ve been an incredibly fascinating piece. Charleston Boulevard does stretch from E to W, but I believe the historic side of Charleston is its downtown area encompassing east towards Boulder Highway, from Shadow Ridge and historic Huntridge neighborhoods. The streets that run parallel to Charleston (Sahara on the South side and Fremont to the North) are locations of some of the juiciest specks of Las Vegas history; just think the Mob had much to do with the development of this part of town... casinos, beautiful golf coursed neighborhoods, the boulevard mall and even a money laundering hospitals (Sunrise). Should’ve let Dr. Green direct this whole documentary, he was my professor in college and was passionate about the city of Las Vegas. PS No brothels in sight anywhere in Las Vegas
