In 69 I bought a year-old 68 T-bird and loved it. In 73 I then bought a 71 model and it was fantastic. They were beautiful inside and I always loved those rear sequential turn signals popularized in the T-bird and Cougar. My last T-bird was a brand new 1977 model but come the 80's the T-bird was but a shell of its former self. They became very small and boxy and a 6 cylinder was the biggest engine available for it - one even having a FOUR CYLINDER. They got better later on by then I was done with T-bird's and changed to the Grand Marquis.

In 2005 I bought a 1971 Thunderbird as my first daily driver, when I was 16. I loved that car. Mine was a 4 door, but the rear doors where suicide doors, and I can confirm these WILL roast the tires in first gear. Gas prices forced me to sell it for far less than i should have but I'm glad they are still being represented. I wonder if he mentions that every side seat has it's own ash tray? a 70s classic

I had a 1970 Thunderbird with the 429 Thunderjet. One of the best cars I ever owned, way ahead of its time. It was a blast to drive for such a big car. Till this day I regret selling it during the '79 gas crisis.

I too regret selling my 1965 Chevy Impala, 1970, Malibu, 1973 Monte Carlo, 1979 Chevy impala. Those were the days cars were made of metal and rode like a dream. Today i drive a 2021 Jeep grand cherokee that I've had nothing but problems. it's cheap plastic body parts and several recalls has been a joke.

I bought and owned a 1971 Ford T-Bird that was the 2 door model with the vinyl top and I had it painted Royal midnight metallic blue with pearl coat and clear coat. It was a carbon copy of the one in the video. I had just joined the Army and bought it used for $2,500.00 and I rebuilt/restored it to the best of my abilities. It had a 460 cubic inch motor in it and I tweaked it up and if it had wings attached it would leave the ground; as a young lad, I had a lead foot and I raced it against every Nova, Chevelle, Cougar, Mustang etc... in its class and I blew their doors off. I was clocked at 160 plus mph in that car and it was the fastest car that I've ever driven, I wish I hadn't sold in before moving to Missouri, it was definitely one bad ass muscle car with all the luxury of a Caddy. As I restored it, it was sometimes difficult to find certain parts like window switches some smaller components.

My parents had a '71 T-Bird just like this car - except it was bronze. Ours was fully loaded, with a split bench (fully powered) front seat. It was the same car a seen in the Bond flick Diamonds Are Forever (Bond was tossed into the trunck of a '71 bronze T-Bird). The 429 four=barrel, posi-traction, dual exhaust, was a blast - just a rocket ship. Too bad my parents sold it when I left for college!

Hey guys, great cars, I knew someone who had a special ordered 70 T-Bird that was a chocolate brown metallic finish with the same vinyl roof and the interior was a sort of rolled/pleated shiny like brown taffita with buttons and that curved back seat was So Cool to look at, my grandmother had a very nice big sofa that looked just like it, very expensive pc. of furniture, I will never forget that car, and I am 63 yrs. young and haven't seen a Bird like it since, I still look through. Nice Cars and best of luck with them!

I had a 71 Thunderbird. Had a couple of 70's also. They were both the lower chop top look. Mecum refers to it as a Fastback. I NEVER heard anyone refer to it as a Fastback. That car was beautiful. I don't know why it wasn't a huge hit then. The interior is unbelievable. The back seat was unmatched. The power on the 70 was a bit better as I recall. Super smooth. So many of the cars I bought for a low price, are wanted now. I bought these cars for under $2000. The 71 was like a new car. The back seat looked like no one ever sat in it. I had a 70 Grand Prix. Same story. Had a 69 Rivera. I never paid over $2000 for any of them. Can barely find them now. Just add these to my many mistakes, when I sold them.

I love how Thunderbird interiors kept that super ergonomic design well into the tenth generation. I have a tenth generation 94 LX trim Tbird and the interior is very similar to the one featured here. Unkillable cars too, mine has 800,000 miles and the engine runs cleaner than any newer used car I could find. True to its name, the powerful creature of folklore.

Bought one in '71 - triple white but with every power option. Had oval "opera windows" in the landau and 12 way power swivel front buckets. The instrument panel was VERY cool - cockpit design with LOTS of colored lighting. The doors were HUMONGOUS - VERY difficult to get OUT or IN the car in most parking situations. Unfortunately, this was absolutely the most troublesome car I ever owned - in the shop within the first month for electrical problems which required the entire dash to be removed - never "new" again. Was driving through FL at night when the entire electrical system went berserk and started flashing ALL lights, inside and OUT, intermittently ...like a discotheque. Sold the car after only 10 months.

as can be seen, the fit and finish and build quality of ford products is clearly superior of G.M. and chrysler products. Remember the olds cutlasses and buick regals of the 70s? everybody had to have a 76 cutlass, and within 2 years the rear bumper supports rotted out and many replaced the bumpers with wooden boards-mark of excellece my ass

Ford was always a step above GM and Chrysler in style and build quality back in those days. During the "Dark Ages" between 1973 and 1990 (?) Fords were terrible, but GM and Chrysler were absolutely abysmal.

I bought a 71 with fast back in 88, 429 w 725 or 750 cfm factory Holley, tru spokes.only thing wrong with it was the pass side r1/4 was moderately damaged & those 4 big drive shaft universals needed replacing. On the way home from buying it, my partner (in a 70s 455 tornado) who was super confident, challenged me 2-3 times at red lights before I had enough of his b.s., I kept it in drive, I only had driven 10 miles in it, street racin wasn't on my mind,didn't have any idea how it would perform. He was In drag race form, HAD his in low, light turned green, we both burned a few feet of rubber, he smoked those front tires pretty good, and I beat him by 3-4 lengths. I don't know who was more suprised. So now he's beggin for another go, which we did. Pretty much the same out come, but he kept wheel spin to a min, lost by less than 3 that time...so he was kinda quiet the rest of the way home. That T- Bird was a runner, 2 months later I had 2 in. taken out of the top. That's one I wish I still had. It was A UUGE(trumpism) SOLID, GREAT FEELING, car

That's a nice looking Bunkiebird you got there. For the 1970 model year, the Thunderbird was stylistically updated with the addition of a large, bird's beak-style projection out of its grille. Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen, a former GM executive, then President of Ford at that time, is said to be responsible for this dramatic change to the grill so the 70 through 71 model of Thunderbirds are commonly known by the nickname Bunkie birds. I got a 67 Thunderbird myself with under 50,000 mi, bought it at about 44000 Thousand miles and up to about 46 and some change myself now. The interiors impeccable in mine The body and paint starting to chip here and there but everything's original some rust here and there on mine as it was a buffalo New York car but actually quite good there More surface rust than anything nothing that is affecting the frame or anything.

Cars back then did not rattle and squeak like the plastic fantastic wonders made today. All parts mounting was metal and parts were steel and welded. The car was designed for a 'boulevard ride' so it didn't beat it's self to pieces on our rough roads. I drove old T-Birds from the 60's for over 20 years and they are just amazingly well made vehicles. Yes, engines and such have come a long way, but car bodies have not.
@Mike-df1ye
@Mike-df1ye 8 лет назад
Except for the fact that if you were in this car and were in a head-on collision with a recent year Honda Civic you would die instantly due to being impaled on the steering wheel, while the Civic driver would walk away with minor injuries if any at all. There were no safety cages, airbags, crumple zones or, in many cases, shoulder belts in cars back then. As far as styling goes, those old cars are beautiful and great fun to take to car shows and look at, but I'd never dream of making one a daily driver.
@archangele1
@archangele1 8 лет назад
You know, I drove a 1954 Oldsmobile and a 1964 Thunderbird for over 25 years. I'm still here. 5 people were killed on I 75 a week ago in a pile up in modern cars. Yes, safety features are better. But there is no substitute for attentive , defensive driving. Although this 71 Tbird is a body on frame, the 1958 - 1966 Thunderbirds were unibody tanks with plenty of metal to sustain impressive crashes. In fact they were the forerunners of today's modern unibody designs, only a lot heavier. ( the 64 Tbird tipped the scales at an astounding 4600 lbs dry) No, they did not have shoulder belts or air bags. But to say they are dangerous to drive is really silly. To try and drive an old car like this 71 like you would my 350Z would be fool hardy. You learn to drive within the car's limits or you die. Real simple formula with any vehicle from a semi to a Corvette. My point was that the interior noises, rattles and such are far worse in the modern cars I own now as compared to the older ones. Never said the older ones were festooned with safety features or were more safe overall. The whole idea of a boulevard ride negates the quick handling most people take for granted if they were born during or after Ronald Regan. If you never spent years behind the wheel of what people now consider classics, then you would be in danger. These old cars do not handle or respond as quick as most modern vehicles. But if you are as old as I am, then you cut your teeth on these vehicles and have no problem using them as a daily driver even today. It wasn't until about 15 years ago that I actually owned a post 70's vehicle. Again, I'm still here! No accidents.

My neighbor has a 1970 Thunderbird in which he put a Chevrolet 350 drivetrain. He said the Chevrolet engine hurts the value but makes the car practical. He said he can drive the car anywhere and anyone can work on it with easy to find low price parts.

Your neighbor's an idiot. "Makes the car more practical". Hilarious. There is no shortage of engine parts for a 429 Ford. Your local NAPA store has most of it. They made thousands and thousands of 429s. What kind of a nut would put in a lesser torque engine--not even from the same manufacturer--modify motor mounts, and likely modify the driveshaft to get the Chevy to work in it? Not to mention different exhaust system, shift linkages, and transmission mounts. II'll bet the moron used a hammer and bent anything that was in the way The big engine and power accessories make these cars.

You know a body man could cut out that silly looking beak in the front and smooth it all so it's just all straight across,add some mag wheels,maybe a rear spoiler and hood scoop up front and you have one great looking muscle machine on a budget.

THe Ford HOODS starting in 71, AQRTE NOT SAFE!! The hood is sometimes striking, but one has to driving slow, because YOU WILL B+NOT SEE THAT TRYCICLE , or cat etc. The upside, Start your 16 year kid driving a 65-73 ford, with power steering, and if he/she masters one of those., EVERY other modern car , will seem sooo easy. But to learn on a 65 Country sedan, it drifted and 100 percent concentration
