www.dynomiteper... - On the dyno is Chris and his 1972 Ford Pinto drag car. The car has a 460 big block V8. I was very interested in the numbers since I was considering putting one in my 1968 F100. Chris's car made 270HP and 312Ft/LB of Torque.

Just to add to the comments, Super Chevy magazine February 2011 ran a stock 1970 ss 454/450ho and a nd a 1959 Yenko 427 Camaro on a chassis dyno. The LS-6 Chevelle made 285hp/319 torque to the rear wheels, the Camaro made 287hp/ 320 torque to rear wheels. When you consider both these engines were 11.0 to 1 compression, had .520" lift solid cams, 2.19 " intake valves 1.88" exhaust valves and 780 or 850 cfm Holley carbs then 270 hp from a low compression 460 compares well with the hotrod chevy. The torque numbers are even closer. Just sayin!!!

???? I have a 68 Chevelle with a 454HO. It has 8 3/4 to 1 compression. Also, on the chassis dyno with a 830 double pumper and long tube headers and a turbo 400 mine made 348 hp and 372 ft. lbs. of torque. Your numbers are very low.

The 454HO is a crate engine with 438 hp and over 500 ft. lbs. of torque. It also has forged internals, four bolt main bearings and 8 3/4 to 1 compression. The earlier years only claimed that it made 425 hp. Or....are you referring to the LS7 454?

everyone does`nt jump in a new hotrod with both feet .. sometimes you build something low on power to get all the handling bugs out .. i built a full tube frame 460 pinto 40 years ago .. would not get out of it`s own way .. i switched to a BOSS 302 and it screamed but was scary as hades to drive .. i could not fix a bump steer problem .. the owner of this car can add power later ..

Awesome. Yes. Guys who know and have built cars know , we know it takes trial and error and many redo and remake stuff. Dial it in takes time. No build will be perfect first go . This 460 appears to be tired or just a stock 460 with no real power made yet. The power is easy to make in a 460 , it's all the bugs in steering and suspension and driveability that need to be solved and dialed in before add 1000hp or more. This is great little pinto and it takes time. Power is easy part really . All the dialing in and fine tune takes time

Probably about right for a mid 70,s Low Compression 460 Ford, sounds completely stock except maybe open headers. Thought torque be a little higher tho, maybe another 50 ft.lbs. Motor could be tired too.

The horsepower is great if the 460 is only stock. i have a 1971 Pinto that looks completely stock ( FULL INTERIOR AND NO ROLL BAR ), but it has a very strong 347 cid and i got 414hp to the rear wheels. Than we lowered the compresion and added a super charger off of Ebay and we got 496 hp to the rear wheels. This summer it went 12.4 in the quarter, but got pulled off track for only regular laptop seatbelts

No wonder that dog is for sale. It doesn't take much in the way of mods to get 400+ hp from the 460.

I'm a FORD guy, but I have to admit that stock 460 heads are hideous junk. Spend the money on a set of AFRs or Jon Kaase heads....then that big 'ole 460 will break the dyno. (And its easy to stroke it to 521cid for 750HP N/A!)

The D0VE heads (pre smog) are pretty good for a stock application, but no comparison to the aftermarket. There's just something about big block NA power!

​@@dynomiteperformance Yep....the stock exhaust ports are just awful, along with monster sized oval intake ports A set of OEM Explorer 5.0 GT40 heads flow the same on the exhaust as stock 460 heads!

It appears the day this car was ran A big block chevy stroker only made 368 hp and 372 ft lbs A built Hellcat only made 661 hp and 604 ft lbs Air, hunidity, dyno setup can vary, knowing the other cars tested on the same day gives a better picture of what was going on. Dynomite Mobile Dyno and Tuning would problably be the first to admit he can munipulate the numbers with Dyno settings, he just likes to break hearts not puff egos apparently.

Sorry to break your heart but we run the same settings all the time. SAE correction factor which is the standard that most dyno operators use. Also keep in mind that numbers given are hp/tq to the rear wheels not at the crank. So that 661hp would be closer to 800hp at the crank.

Wow my bone stock 351W put out more than that, I feel its time for that Pinto to loose some weight and go to a small block, I am sure you put in a late model stock 460 time to upgrade.

The 460 is known more for torque than horsepower. We really didn't have time to talk to the owner about his setup because the event was so busy. I'm guessing it's a post 1972 motor which has a stock hp rating of 240hp.

@Zahara Greene Pretty much all the old big blocks from any manufacturer made 400 horsepower until the late 60s I believe. Or at least they could with a big carb and tune up. I want to say the 460s were the least powerful at 340hp, 440 Chrysler got close to 500hp. The small block fords could make 400 with a camshaft and carburetor. Everything tanked when gas got expensive because high octane gas has a low energy density and wont get you very far. People didn't want cars that got 8 miles per gallon so manufacturers stopped making them which is why compressions ratios dropped.

I do NOT believe the 270 hp and 312 ft/lbs measurement. That's more like 302 numbers.

Stock hp numbers for the 460 after 1972 are only around 240hp and 350ft/lbs. With the wide open exhaust like on this set up you'll lose a ton of torque. Also keep in mind the numbers above are crank hp and the numbers we recorded are wheel hp. Typical losses from crank to wheel are 15 to 20 percent

@@dynomiteperformance you have the wrong algorithm. So many times I've seen these portable dynos record big HP on a fuel injected vehicle and way low numbers on a carbureted engine. The HP rating of the 1972 460 engine by Ford was to appease the government. Not actual power output. Even a smog era 460 typically will produce 295-310 rwhp on a corrected dynamometer.

@@brandonhumphries3377 time, rpm and speed are collected the same way regardless of efi or carb set up. Hp and torque are merely calculations derived from the parameters mentioned above. Since driveline losses will vary depending on the vehicle, chassis dyno results have to be taken with a grain of salt. If you want true numbers then you must pull the motor and use an engine dyno.

Yes. A chassis dyno measures at the wheels. Probably about a 20% loss from crank

No these were the numbers. A post 1974 460 is not a powerhouse. This is what they make to the wheels

That thing sounds like its running on 7 cylinders, no wonder it's for sale if i built a car that couldn't make more power than a 2018 Honda Accord, I would sell it too or burn it....just saying.

I believe it was a fairly stock motor other than an aluminum intake and headers. Most likely this has the D3VE heads

Typical ford,,use it as a boat anchor, buy a late model Chevy engine, do some head work,lifter change, carburetor of fuel injection your choice than you might have something.
