1972 Kawasaki H2 Classic 750cc 2 Stroke Triple..The Widow Maker

These were the bikes we had and didn't know any different, we thought that's how things were and braking was never an issue, and guess what, I survived and I'm still here. All late 60's and most 70's bikes were so beautiful . My SL 350 had drums front and back and never had a close one. Maybe we learn to live with what we have and develop skills to suit ! Cut my teeth on these babies back in the 70’s. Loved watching a younger person reliving my old fond memories.

50 years ago, a guy let me drive a new blue 72 H2500 around my high school parking lot. i has a Suzuki T500 at the time now have a CBX. It looks even scarier watching it go down the wrong side of the road. I remember a 16-yr-old back then telling me he took one for a test drive at a Kawasaki dealer and walked it back on the sidewalk for a 1/4 mile. lol

And the angels sang!

I owned the '72 H2 750 Mach IV and can attest to the quickness in getting to the top speed, around 110-115 mph, and the poor handling. As you near the top speed the handlebars wanted to go into a death wobbling tank slapping frenzy if you didn't back off. That damper and knob didn't help the wobble at all. I've seen many modified 750 triples as well as the engine put into better customized frames/suspension. I've also seen others using the engine to propel a number of customized 3 and 4 wheel vehicles. Allen Millyard has done some amazing engine transformations with a few 2-Smoke😄 bikes.

What a great bike from a time when you had to put real effort into riding. I’ve just brought a Suzuki GT 185 which was my first bike back in 1980 and it’s much worse to ride than I remember but loved every minute of riding it.

Had 73 500 H1. Rattle every filling out….environmental disaster!! Loved it!!

Addicting staying in the 'Power Band' 2 strokes, Hell Yeah!

Nice ride. The imprecise steering has a reason. Before you get on one check the steering head bushes and the swingarm bushes - easy to do: Put the bike on the main stand. Get someone to weigh down the rear of the bike so the front wheel is in the air and grab hold of the front wheel and see if there's any play in the steering head? Then check the rear wheel to see if the swingarm has play? Many people had a friend with a lathe make them a custom set of phosphor bronze bushes for the steering head and swingarm bushes. That will make an enormous improvement. The H2 750 should power wheelie at 6,000rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. For lack of power - any carbon on the exhaust ports or the baffles would reduce power. Take the exhaust pipes off and put Redex on the exhaust ports for one week then wipe it off with a rag. Clean the baffles up with a blow torch. Drill a hole through the head of each baffle bolt and secure them with wire as they fall out. As for rattling - they only rattle if the crank isn't balanced. That's a huge job. Let me know if you want to find out how to do that? As for brakes - they had a double output brake hydraulic line for a 2nd front disk. It should have been fitted from the factory but they didn't do it.

Yep, here we go. I love to see other dudes driving these bikes. I was only one of my friends that did not injure myself too badly on the h2. Short frame h2 could do massive 3rd gear wheelies. The long frame h2 did massive 2nd gear burnouts.

I passed my test at 17y on the kh250 in that blue it had a slogan on number plate," more poke 2 stroke."The h2 was my dream bike but just couldn't afford one, so to compensate, I now have a 2015 h2 which also takes concentration to ride but wouldn't change a thing. Keep up the good work'.

Excellent episode. Good handful of Kwak. Enjoyed the pipes. Wooden brakes are a bit better on Kettles & they’re more stable too, but slower / heavier. Much easier to enjoy long term, the old Suzuki triples.

If im not mistaken these were some of the fastest bikes in history, thus the "widowmaker" monkier. The acceleration on that thing is prolly insane. Yeah most 2-stokes like to be revved, they have a hard time running below 1500rpm

The 500 H1 is the original widow maker and is even more explosive after 6000 rpm. The widow maker name just carried on. Both bikes did quarter miles in the 12’s.

My buddy let me take his for a ride. It handled like a 2X4 with an engine and wheels. I had a 750 water buffalo, slower but I stayed alive

Never been a fan of bikes but some bike engines yes. I saw a Kawasaki with a 2 cyl 2 stroke engine last week.

In the 80s some one put that engine in an RDLC 350....FUCK YEAH.

I drive one weekly, not a problem at all so I do now understand all the fuss. Spoiled maybe :) ? The four units I have are certainly more comfortable than my R6. Setup is the key, and a hundred dollar modern front brake.

I had a lot of two strokes in the eighties & ninties, ypvs 350 tzr 250 gt 185, 250, X5/7, rd 400, gp 100/125, kh 125, ts 185, dt175, Montesa Cota 172, rd 200, sb 200, ts 50, cz 250, never a H2, though my mate doug had one back in the early 80's & he was well impressed

I could see the flexing frame being manageable. But having to phone in breaking input to authorities in triplicate days before needed. Riders adapt to wonky frames and demonic acceleration. This bike's slinky frame and dollar bin brakes threw many riders into the afterlife. My first bike was a KZ 750 4 stroke. Same frame and brakes. Running such demon power thru that set up is mental. Well played.

The 1971 Dunstall Norton 810 (based on Norton 750) was the first production motorcycle to run the 1/4 mile in less than 12 seconds, 11 9/10 seconds. This was followed by the 1972 Kawasaki Z1 900 which ran the 1/4 mile in 12 seconds, and the 1971 Kawasak H2 Mach IV 750 which ran the 1/4 mile in 12 3/10 seconds. I recall at least 2 stock Dunstall Nortons back at that time and they had no trouble taking on the the Kawasaki Mach IV 750 in a drag race (street and also Lions Drag strip in Wilmington, California), even with the Kawasaki 750 riders wrapping themselves around the gas tank to prevent wheelies). The main issue with the H2 was speed wobble, many riders used two steering dampers to solve the issue.

I had a 500 cc of one of those and I loved that bike going fast was fun as all get out. The gears were N-1-2-3-4-5, not 1 down 4 up, it hauled ass, I had mine going 140 mph on Hwy 400 north bound. I had to slow down a mile before my stop, brakes were an issue

Well at least it hasn't got stupid US handlebars, non original mirrors, not that you'd see out of them. I liked the 75 H2 C best in blue, to be honest they were fine to ride, loads of torque, loads of power. They were the greatest in my opinion. Just ride with commonsense and allow for what you didn't have, race breed Brembo brakes.

I would have bought one if I could find one....I had the yamaha RD400 and I desperiately wanted this bike, but no one had them for saile in those days...

I remember my first ride on my buddies H2 , shit ...ran out brakes ... Blew through the stop sign at the end of the intersection . Almost 50 years later ... Got shit load of Triple's now !

I had the H1 and I could swear that 1 could beat the H2 off the line but by the time you hit the quarter mile the thing. Had passed you. The exhausting part I think comes from the noise... The rest of it you get used to...

my 74 kawi G5 100cc 2 smoker........... i hot the front and rear drums hot (hard to do with a top end of 45 MPH) ended up going straight off.... into the ditch . but its an enduro...... so i just screamed "FUCKING SHHHHIIITTTTTTTTT" the whole time....... and kept it chrome side up first time i even miss braked a corner...... if i just counter steered with light brake..... id of made it . glad i learned that at 45 VS 145 (got a 98 honda magna 750 ..... its feeling slow, which is NOT a good sign....might have to get a liter bike now........)

Haha, roads are not clogged like that in Central Newfoundland. You can open out bikes there. Just have to watch out for 1200 lbs moose on roads.

They don't handle worse than any other 72,but any other 72 didn't have the same power. Also they do have a neutral light in the Tach. He should have taken off the line through three gears..... he would have crapped!
