1972 Renault-Alpine A110 1600S: Fetching, Ferocious, French

By the end of the very first official season of the World Rally Championship in 1973, Renault-Alpine emerged victorious, with the extremely light and lithe A110 helping to take the honors back to Dieppe, where the Alpine story can be followed back to the 1950s and the tuning efforts of Jean Rédélé.
Rédélé’s ability to coax performance from Renault’s 4CV caught the marque’s attention, and they were quick to support the young Frenchman’s ambitions to build his own car. With powertrains supplied by Renault, Rédélé started the lineage that would eventually include the WRC-winning A110. The early A106s and A108s were competent machines, but the A110 was a revolutionary step for Alpine.
By the time the A110 had evolved into the 1600S version, the fiberglass-clad chassis was powered by a rear-mounted aluminum four-cylinder fed by twin Weber 45 carbs, producing nearly 140 horsepower. Not a prodigious amount of ponies to be sure, but considering the cars weighed less than 700kg (~1543lbs), it was enough to make the nimble short-wheelbase car a championship winner.
In this week’s film we join our host Sam Hancock as he takes the road-going version of the rally legend out for some exercise on the type of road this car was born for.

Yes it is super tiny. You have to see one in person to understand the proportions of the car. And it is a real rallye beast.

Just to be clear I'm not comparing this car to the mg midget in any way (!) but I own a midget, which is close enough the exact same size to this and I really think that smallness is an underrated facet in driving enjoyment. The road is relatively so much wider and the sense of speed so much more exaggerated.

@@johnhpianoman Totally. The car I learned to drive a stick in was a 1979 Midget. It was really a street legal go-kart. So much fun to wring out what little power it had on the twisties! While my first car is now a 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk, which is a totally different creature, it is still fairly nimble and has a stick as well.

This car is a legend here in Brazil, its name is a tribute to the Interlagos circuit and it was a big winner of the races here in Brazil: 500 miles from Porto Alegre in 1963, 500 km from Interlargos and 200 km from Montevideo in 1964 In 1967 one can hear the adaptation of the car called the bino mark, with a more evolved design and better performance, it won the milia interlagos mile in 1967. It had several bino marks: I and II. He had big names in Brazilian motorsport at the wheel, like the brother of two-time formula 1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Wilson Fittipaldi. This is my dream car, I’d sell my left kidney for one. Here in America most people like JDM, European exotics or American muscle cars or trucks but cars like this, triumph Spitfire and cars that were built to be light and flickable are ones that I love. Great video on the Alpine

You might find a Dinalpin in Mexico, it can certainly be more affordable than importing an Alpine from Europe.

@@aaronmachado13 There might be some minor differences on engines. the most important thing for these kind of cars is to have a structurally clean chassis. The polyester bodywork is thinner and sealed to the chassis on the Alpine and bolted on the Dinalpin. They are all about hype and marketing themselves. This guy is a raving tool head, and despite all the stylized superlatives, is far more obsessed with himself than the car. Their is a difference which these shallow people do not comprehend. Thankfully, that difference is still a great memory.

I first remember seeing this car in R&T magazine when I was a teenager and it was by far one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen. Some 30 plus years later it still stands true. You touched on something I’ve preached about for years power isn’t everything because unless your on a track you can’t use all that power on a public road. I drive a 115 horsepower Vw Golf with a five speed manual and the gearing is so tight I’m always making power. Today we have cars like the BRZ/Miata that prove just that.

Lotus helped Alpine. After the Le Mans conspiracy of 1963 in which the Lotus 23b was banned from racing that year, Lotus believed the french racing team Bonnet was behind it. Alpine being a direct rival to Bonnet, Chapman agreed to have some of the Lotus engineers help Alpine to develop a car that would embarrass Bonnet and win the Index of Thermal Efficiency at Lemans. With inspiration from the Lotus 23, Bob Dance, Keith Duckworth and Len Terry developed a 2 seater racing prototype based on the Lotus 23. With the help of Alpine this would become the Alpine m64 and Alpine m65. In 1964 Alpine beat Rene Bonnet and won the Index of Thermal Efficiency and went on to become the premier French racing car manufacturer.

@GastonJ That Lotus was involved? I agree there. Definitely reads like others were hired, and popular misconception has it that they were 'from' Lotus, rather then being freelance engineers who worked for many teams and manufacturers.

Beautiful car, beautiful drive. I've known about the A110 for quite some time, but somehow didn't realize just *how* small they are (never seen one in person). That's quite a bit of camber on the rear, too.

Finally this video doesn't have constant music over the sounds of the engines, the old video did that and it drove everyone nuts. They have the music in the appropriate places and you can hear the engine notes.

Thanks, great review, the original is so tiny. I remember as a small child in the 1970s, the A110 on the pages of my car books winning, Just about to take delivery of one the new A110’s - can’t wait, putting the little kid back into motoring.

The roofline is so low! Like a Lotus Europa. You are almost lying down when you drive these cars. So fun and so visceral. A golden era of sports cars that you could basically drive home from the dealership, then go rallying on the weekend. Fantastic!

Can't we have the old format back? The essence and the originality of Petrolicious was the connection and stories between the owners and there cars. I can understand that the new owners don't have the same ideas and maybe have different connection in the world of cars than the founder and change is not always bad but I'm maybe harsh but this person is boring. Good racing driver and excellent knowledge of the historic scene (he is very good at that) don't make you a good story teller... I understand it's a business but try to stick a little to the roots of the company and be original and creative otherwise it's gonna be hard, there is tons of boring car reviews channel with big budget videos on RU-vid don't become one of them. Hope you will be suceesfull and listen a little bit to us little keyboard fan, cheers, a fellow petrolhead !

They're working on it. The original CEO was ousted, and they're releasing their paid series as a stopgap until they have new content. I'm certain we'll get back to the original format soon.

I don't know man, this guy knows his stuff, and the videos are still very well done. While the previous format did give you that connection of the owners time with the vehicle, a few too many of those owners were quite frankly, unlikeable, pretentious, hipster wankers.

Chappe & Gessalin, who made the bodywork for the first Alpine A106, then the A108 and the GT4, are often forgotten in the Alpine saga. They also built their own sports coupés, the CG 1000, 1200 & 1300. Marc Mignotet, who was Alpine in-house "sorcier", also helped to develop Gordini engine bases for competition cars.

Nice video, definitely a car that was widely under-appreciated to the point of being almost forgotten, but this demonstrates that it was the product of pure passion with a good dose of near-genius inventiveness. Even I had no idea that the late versions could be so quick, and this one sounds like it would easily compete with a contemporary Lotus Elan. A direct comparison would be very interesting (hint hint).

Beautiful car and filmed in stunning surroundings. I sat in the 2022 Alpine A110 today and it reignited my enthusiasm for the original. I'm lucky to own a Lotus Elan +2 and see a lot of similarity in some of the angles. I laughed out loud when he got out and the car literally became "knee high to a grasshopper". How tall is this presenter!?
