I saw Sutherland perform this role in 1980 in San Diego. I will never forget the power and beauty of her voice! ❤

I was very fortunate to see the live simulcast the ABC did of the 1982 version of Die Fledermaus, with Joan Sutherland. I was 15 at the time, and it really ignited my love for opera.

@emma41093 Tell me about it. But I'm so glad the audio was preserved. And yes, her accent is great. She even sings with it, something a lot of character performers fail to do!

at 23:50 "And who's that? It's Adele - and in my gown CUT DOWN!" On pg 261 of Miss Sutherland's autobiography ("A Prima Donna's Progress") she mentions how that line brought down the house

It must be quite intimidating singing with La Stupenda on stage when she can just obliterate you and wipe out your sound with a single note like the one at 32:00!

Of course you know the story about the critic who faulted Joan’s (admittedly) questionable enunciation. He said she might as well have been singing the Czardas in Hungarian. Which, of course, she was!!

I love her Hungarian Countess accent in this production.
