I'm 67 and finally I'm discovering and enjoying operas. I watched and heard "La Boheme" last evening after reading about the opera's plot on Wikipedia and also a libretto. La Boheme sure did remind me of meeting my husband Steve (may he rest in peace) in college. We both put ourselves through college. He was passionate about writing. I studied art. We had pals studying the same or other artistic things, going through the same financial hardships, and we all were supportive of one another. Steve wasn't sure if he was good enough for me, so when he got his degree, he told me goodbye and drove across the state to go home. We all celebrated at a local bar when he returned to my college town (with a "care package" for me because I ran out of food money) and we got engaged. BTW - The beautiful singing and the acting really touched my heart! I truly saw Luciano Pavarotti as a young struggling student and Mirella Freni as a dying seamstress.
I'm 60 and i just subscribed last year to the Opera. I'm currently in the process of choosing my operas for season 24-25. It should take me about an hour and a half and it's fun to do !
Puccini is by far my favorite opera composer, and this is his masterpiece. I saw Pavarotti and Freni do this at the Met in 1963. I've never forgotten it. This is a wonderful presentation of the opera. Bravo!
I have had over 90% of my 88 years to enjoy Boheme-- I'm gratefully able to listen to hear this recording of Freni / Pavarottii every night .. sometime twice..Bravissimo Ultimate!!
I also love Annarita Taliento's intepretation of Musetta. I haven't find any other singer which manages to express all the complexity of this wonderful character as perfectly as she does: youth, love, desire, freedom...and in the finale, that compassion for her friend! it's just heart-breaking
Remarkable how Pavarotti's and Freni's age and experience come through and inform this interpretation of this opera that they performed so many times over the years. And their voices! Heavenly
I saw Freni & Pavoratti in Boheme at the Met. You could tell they grew up together. They had such a great rapport. You could almost see them transport themselves back to when they, like the characters were playing, were young.
There is no doubt that Pav was the greatest, his voice is just so distinct, the greatest of the greats I feel so priveliged to have heard him sing live in an opera house with not a microphone in sight many many times. Simply the best!
@@mistersmith1883 I do not think English is intrinsically unsuitable for Opera. "Dido and Aeneas' is my favourite baroque opera, and Britten has also composed fine works. PS I am a native Italian speaker
@@musettina6adina224 Wow!!! Thank you so much, it worth to know this. I think Freni was falling in love at performance of Faust, cannot help but carried away by the "devil". What a fine man, he deserves to be a honorary citizen!!! My favorite bass, maybe only Siepi be his competitor...
I saw Freni twice onstage as Mimi. Listen to 1:16:50, the way she caresses the phrase “senza rancor.” I saw Pav onstage as well in Boheme, where his Mimi was Renata Scotto, another great artist.
Me, too. My parents played it frequently after they got the record. I was 4 years old and learned some of the words and music, sang along with it many times. I cherish the words and music to this day, more than 60 years later.
Ciao.. hello..
Recently, I watched a biography of Freni. As she said, she and Pavarotti had been in a same nursery in Modena, almost like twin siblings. Such an ancient friend each other. Pace!
@@stmicci3206 Wow, that means Luciano was 60, Mirella about to turn 61 and her husband 66! And yet they are much more convincing in the roles than the young, beautiful and thin-voiced kids in Luhrmann's Broadway version. Should be a lesson to today's opera directors and impresarios who complain about the so-called 'park and bark' productions of the past!
We had to pick an opera to listen to in Music and then write a summary of how we liked it for online home school. This is my teacher's favorite so I decided to listen to it.
You chose well ^^. This opera must be one of the greatest ever written. Pavarotti sings so well here with so much emotion and Freni is incredible to listen to.
What a fantastic cast! Thank you so much for the subtitles, too!
I’ll be honest. I came here after watching Salvatore Fischella’s Che gelida manina class video on his student, Andrew Owens. And seriously, I have no regrets. This is pure gold. I got interested into opera music. What a beautiful performance by this perfect cast. 🖤
Much Gratitude for This Capolavoro !!! Bravissimi Tutti 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹Absolutely Magnificent Pavarotti , and Freni ❤️❤️💖💖😍😍😍😍🥲🥲🌹🌹🌺🇮🇹🌺Grazie Mille , Again 💔💔!
I love this opera and this performance. Balm for my soul. Mirella Freni is absolutely aweful soprano and a great actress as well. What honnest and deep touching moments when the two of them interact. I appreciate so much that loving and warm glances between them. What moment , and be grateful that this video exists. The interaction between artist and audience as well, straight appreciation without doubting without hesitating. Strange I cannot find kind of this warm loving quality in nowadays . Especially in this time not.
I'm through the first two acts. This is a great recording and a great staging. It's probably right in front of me, but I cannot see a date for this production. In my mind, I am comparing it to the von Karajan recording, ca. 1972. I want to say that the Torino production is earlier because the singing on the von Karajan seems more mature in vocal attack and dynamics. But I am not an opera expert. They are both marvelous, and, in addition to Pavarotti and Freni, this Musetta is terrific.
My breath! Thank you, forever, for this. Certainly, there is some stress on many top notes for Freni and Pavarotti; such beloved artists, the finest. You will NEVER hear this sung better.
@@Kjuken69 Oh, my! Thank you, and of course, opera lovers will always differ. That is one horrible recording for me, and it is the very first one I ever heard! It is only horrible for me because I think de los Angeles is one of the worst singers ever to open a mouth. I didn't know it then and enjoyed Amara and Bjoerling, am I correct? I didn't mind de los Angeles too much because I didn't know any better, and my beloved first teacher played it for me. Years later when I knew quite a bit about the art and science of singing I heard her in some art song recordings and shivered in agony. Then I heard some of the recordings. THEN I went back and tried to listen to the Boheme. I understand that she must have been a charming and endearing performer- but that sound! Tight, so often off pitch or at least not in the center. Such a thin, ugly sound with no roundness. Oh well, You are kind to suggest this recording. I have to stay away from her. If it helps- I cannot abide Callas, either! Ha! Thanks!
Verissimo.
Is this from the famous Pavarotti-Freni televised performance from 1977? An opera friend and I watched it. The performance broke new ground for delivering opera to a wider public, and oh, how beautifully it succeeded! Sound and visual clarity were primitive by today’s standards, but just as the Saturday Met broadcasts were crucial to listeners 40 years earlier, so this tv production was to us. I prefer the Bjoeling-de Los Angeles recording, but no matter. This is what stellar casting, brilliant singing, irresistible emotion is all about. Thank you for posting. Simply wonderful.
Perfection. Great cast. Lucio Gallo also does a funny version of Gianni Schicchi playing the main role. As Mirella grew up with Luciano and was married to Nicolai Ghiarov this really makes it a one in a million version of a classic.
23:00-27:16 The performance of Pavarotti at this time was simply frustrating, think of him in the 60s and 70s, that was really a golden voice. A great talent who could not get rid of the fate of aging in the end!
Grande Puccini!! VIVA V.E.R.D.I.
