1973 Ford Maverick: Miss Maverick

Tess Wood grew up as a self-professed tomboy who helped her dad with his off-road projects. At one point, he owned a Ford truck and a Chevy truck that they’d wrench on together. Tess always preferred the Ford though, and now she drag races a Ford Maverick with a nitrous oxide system and a fully built motor with a supercharger strapped to it to make more than 500hp.
When the Maverick line was launched in 1969, it was intended to be something of an American answer to fuel-efficient compact imports, but when Jess launches her highly modified ’73 example off the line at Pomona, it’s wont to do a wheelie. It’s a transformation that’s seven years in the making, and seeing as she’s chasing the eighth-mile stock short block record, it’s one that she’s far from done with. And her methodology is sound: “Build it, make it faster, break it, figure out how to fix it, and then make it faster again.”

I love it when someone picks the underdog or lesser loved model, commits and then turns it up to 11... So much cooler than another overdone Mustang fastback. I'll always root for the underdog.
@PAExploration
@PAExploration 4 года назад
It's a shame it was the underdog, the Maverick should have been the Mustang through the 1970s, not that Pinto based abomination. Maverick coupes are such beautiful cars, I'd love to have one with a 289, or an Australian Barra straight 6, just to be different.
@pgtmr2713

It's better this way. They were ugly then, now they're not and everything was ugly in the 70's. I like the 60's fastbacks, Fox, New Edge, and the most recent refresh. So it seems every other style made. I have a 94 Probe GT, terrible name for a car. A few years back I had the thought that they should have called Probes, Mavericks. I know they would have sold more of them. Not sure why they didn't. EXP would have been a good name to carry on with too.
@bighands69

@@PAExploration It was not a shame. People of that era had so many options when it came to nice cars. Only the super wealthy today can afford a nice production car. We today can love all of those past cars because we have no options in buying a new car today. The only option for a nice car today is a Bentley or Rolls.
@deividemoreira7548

Here in Brazil we dodn,t have much cars with v8 engines. But Ford brought us the Maverick with v8 302, and it is one of the most iconic cars in Brazil. But they are kinda rare and expensive here, you must have lot of money to buy one and keep it running. If it's an underdog in US, in Brazil it's the dog. Hehe.
@pgtmr2713
@pgtmr2713 4 года назад
@bighand69 It's the opposite of what you're saying. Even if you get a used car today you find great cars with ridiculous options. If you were broke in the 80's you got an am radio... maybe, crank windows. Now you can get power everything, dual zone climate control. Bentley and Rolls are not "nice" cars either. They are the top of the class, exceptional. Which is always going to be priced out to plebs, because no one "needs" hand stitched leathers , hand crafted wood. You also don't need a champagne cooler if you can't afford champagne or a chauffeur to drive you around. So let's adjust the "nice' category down to a 5 series, Audi A5-7 range, Cadillac. And if you absolutely MUST have a Roller or a Bentley under the posterior you can find used ones at huge discounts and put in the work yourself and have something nice instead of buying new. Today is great ! We have both the old cars and the new, back in the day it was only the old. Pick something interesting and start a RU-vid channel.

In High School in the late '70s had a '72 Maverick Grabber, white with the yellow and gold stripes with the 200ci 6 and 1bbl carb. Did a nice port and polish job, 3 angle on the valves, shaved the deck and head, and slightly warmed cam for torque. Clifford dual exhaust and modified the cast in the head intake with a much bigger progressive 2bbl carb. I could take all the cars at the school block to block, even the kid with the new Vette. Couldn't take the kid with the '62 VW Bug with the Porsche motor w/multiple carbs though... Just after college, I came across a wrecked '67 Cougar. Jackpot, had an HP 289! Swapped that in man, gas mileage stunk but what a neck snapper. Got married and that was the end of that car. That Maverick was a fun car to drive and easy to work on; always under-rated!

WOW! I just love that car. My first car I purchased was a 1973 Ford Maverick in year 1978, while serving in the U S Army. I love that car and it's was much different than most Mavericks I had seen. It was a 2 door coupe and came with a 302 Windsor V8, fresh bronze paint, 3/4 vinyl top, beige racing stripes on hood and trunk, hush-trush exhaust, white lettered racing tires and chrome cragers. While stationed at Ft Polk, LA. raced and whipped camaros, mustangs, javelins, novas, you name it. She got a lot of attention and was so fun to drive but lost her in an accident one day before my being shipped to Germany.

What a great story about her dad coming through after losing a spouse and still kicking ass as a parent. And this kid growing up, living a passionate life. That’s not easy, and then to take on life goals that are also very demanding, with so much focus and commitment required. It’s easy to forget that some people see all this as a hobby and some people are driving towards a well lived life every time they get behind the wheel.

Wow... I have been a Maverick guy my whole life but emagine my surprise when I stumbled across this gem of a video. I'm happy to see Mavericks getting more and more spotlight as of late including that amazing white SEMA built one recently that sold for close to $100.000. Or the comet / maverick build on Fast n' Loud. Many people are unaware that the 1970's drag racing scene (when super stock class was in full swing ) was FULL of nasty fast Mavericks/comets, and included some big names like ROUSH racing ( gapp and roush) and DYNO DON Nicholson to name a couple. ( Just google images of super stock mavericks. there is lots.) For FAR TOO long these cars have been under valued and in my opinion are the PERFECT platform to build a sexy, light weight , and fast steet machine / or race car. I currently own a factory black 1970 maverick with a 331 stroker, tko 600 five speed , 9 inch posi , and weighs well under 3000 pounds with me in it. Trust me... on the street, it's very hard to beat. lol. My other one is a mint #'s matching 1972 Comet GT V8 in Met gold with black strips and int. Well done Video!!! Nice job Tess!!!

I saw a murdered out mav down in AZ about 15 yrs ago while driving my 65 nova and fell in love. I was the only guy at car shows that had 2 car seats in the back being a single dad. I got really sick a few years back and had to sell my nova and early bronco to make ends meet. I told myself I would get a mav if I ever got back on my feet. I ended up building a 78 f250 with my girls and love it. About 2 yrs ago I finally found my maverick after looking for the right one for years. Im turning it into more of a freeway flyer tho. Im doing the turbo 300 six, aod trans, 8.8 rear... I have everything finally to put it all together. I just put in a new car lift this week in my shop but I have to finish up a couple projects before I can devote all my time into it... cant wait.

I'm in love. I have my second 73 Maverick, this one a stock 302 LDO. Also had a 72 Grabber with 200 I6, 72 Spirit with 200 I6. Great cars as far a reliability goes. Well over 150,000 miles on each of these American made carburated old tech cars. I set mine up for long distance touring on back roads, but like watching drags as well. Next project is installing a 96 Cougar IRS. My daughter wrenched with me for many years. Now she drives Hondas until they have 250,000 miles on them and trades them in. Much better for hauling around my grandsons, so I'm told.

My first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick. White with red/black interior. I bought from a guy ($500 bucks) that had it just sitting near a creek, don't recall why it was broken down but, my friends dad checked it out and said we could get it running. was perfectly straight, little to no rust, ran great and it had that 6 banger. Lots of great "high school" memories in that car (if ya know what I mean)! Bought a 302 out of a mustang and was going to hop it up but, my half brother and his step dad dropped the ball and it never got done. My second car was a 71' with the 302 but, was nowhere near in the shape my 70' was.

Production quality is through the roof on these videos. There was a beautiful somber air to this video. The loss of her mum plays through in her relationship with this car. It’s beautiful and exposes the deeper groove in our love for cars. Petrolicious is what I use to show non car people why I love cars and car culture on an almost spiritual level. To say keep up the amazing work is contrived and condescending. Instead, keep setting the bar for the rest of automotive cinematography to strive to reach. Brilliant.

Good to see a Maverick. My best friend and I were partners in a ‘73 Maverick that we raced for three seasons in addition to our own cars when we were seniors in high school and first couple years of college (yes we both had family business sponsorships) It was a 4-door however due to the weight break in the rules (PS) at the time. We ran a 366 ci displacement (351C) and would run in the 9s. As just a bracket or match racer we would swap out for a 494 ci Ford CanAm block to get into the mid 8s. My friend bought out my half of the Maverick but I still have the ‘78 Mustang II that will run mid to high 8s. It really brings back memories and I wish her well.

I always loved the Ford Maverick! I remember at age 15 getting a fun ride in my Neighbors Black Maverick Grabber with silver center stripe and looking over those hood scoop humps. That car was a performer with a mildly heated up 302 4 bbl holley, Edelbrock alumn Intake, 4 speed top loader trans and a 4;10 Posi in the rear. The car was light and nothing much on the insides but the shape as you stated in this video is sexy! Always got my attention when I saw a Maverick Grabber! Even though I have always been a GTO and mid size GM fan!

Wow,never expected to see a Maverick here,it might be the underdog in America,but it is probably one of the most loved cars in my country,Brazil. It was the only real drivers car,the only equipped with a V8 at that time on my country(and probably to these days,as it still probably the only V8 that was actually produced here),so always max respect for the driver when you see one on the road

I own a mustang but my real love was the 65 Falcon. I had a half dozen of them but junked most of them due to rust and no parts availablitiy. I always liked the Maverick and wanted to put a Boss 302 in one. I love the car you built and yes if you supercharge there is a point where the block will break in half on all windsor design blocks. Thankfully we can buy after market blocks that beefed up and have splayed caps etc. Way to go young Lady.

This was my high school car! I had to grease the front end like weekly! That 302 was bulletproof, and trust me I tested it. Miss that car!

Used to be a guy in the 80's that worked at a local auto parts store. Had a bad ass Maverick with a 351W and a 4 speed. License plates were FOMOCO1. White with blue Cobra stripes. What's more interesting is I know a lonely county road where sits a Mercury Comet GT in a driveway....same as the Maverick here but Mercury's version. Neat car. PS...Tess is AWESOME!!!!!

Ok, Storytime. As I was growing up my dad was the automotive editor for the Boston Globe. We had a different car in our driveway every other week for about half the year. Everything from VW Beatles, Mustangs, pickup trucks, luxury cars and even an exotic sports car from time to time. He was on a first-name basis with a lot of my car heroes. He drove int eh Mustage Rallies with Carol Shelby. He was friends with Ferry Porsche. I could not WAIT to get my license. The month I got my license he got promoted to another department at the paper. He brought home one last car, a Maveric Grabber, and he tossed me the keys. Yup, I had fun with it. BTW the only car hero I ever met through dad was John Fitch.

She might be as fine a woman that I've ever seen and she has a great attitude . Calm , smart and obviously well raised.good luck foxy!

Congratulations Miss Maverick. Please believe me when I say that I understand your love to this car, 100%. I had a wonderful love affair with a Maverick for decades over here in my country. Brazil. My passion began when I lived in America back in 1981. Today my car resides in the hands of a very important car collector. And already got some important prizes of perfection. The model I had was a 1978 LDO coupé.

Big respect for her and her build. Mavericks are tremendously sought after here in Brazil. One of the very few muscle cars people could get their hands on (and still, you had to have big money). I think is really depressing how people treat this cars in the USA. Literally one of the best cars of the 70's even if there was no oil crysis. Super well built and light years more interesting that the period mustang.
