Gorgeous truck!!! The driver made that old Detroit sound like a symphony. That’s talent you can’t hardly find nowadays. Hope truck and driver are still on the road jamming gears.
I drove a 1973 4070 in 1977 for CLAY HYDER (Auburndale, Fla.). It had a Formula 290, 10 speed SPICER, & 4:30 Rears. Hauled orange juice out, & swingin' meat back. Lotta great memories. Now I'm 71 & wish I could do it all over again. - "Those were the days my friend, we thought would never end" ;-) Steve / W5BIB
Loved the old style shifter knob with low direct and o/d all together, this guy even clutches his splitter gears! A real pro. No chance of shocking his driveline
My grandfather drove one of these as his first truck back in the early 80s with the same exact engine RIP Grandpa 1955-2022 hearing a Detroit will always remind me of you.
I wasn't sure if the International was really in Guatemala...then I caught site of the soccer field, right there on the main Blvd... Great to see an American made rig being expertly driven , sounds great !
I learned to drive on a '74 Transtar 4070 daycab. Loud, bumpy, screamin' 318 Detroit- but insanely dependable and tough. Wish I had the funds to buy one just to put it in the yard and look at it
When I was married to my first ex husband he and I drove one like this .. hauling cattle or grain..until he was no longer able to drive a truck due to an accident that left him disabled.. but I took over for him while we were still married.
This guy needs to come to America and teach our truckers how to drive and throw gears like he does. I can watch this guy master this Transtar all day man!
This is you call a operator. Not a steering wheel holder, not a super trucker. That’s a operator. Everything clean and tidy inside and out. Smooth touch on the controls no bucking banging. I’d put him in a truck of mine anyday. Hand him a load of anything and probably never think another thing about it.
Volvo and I'm pretty sure most if not all still offer manual gearboxes, I know DAF does, and according to a PDF I found for the UK up to FH16 600 atleast offer the manual gearboxes in different setups, above that it seems to be iShift only. But I'm sure you can fit an aftermarket gearbox if you'd like, like an Eaton Fuller perhaps...
They do offer manual boxes, but its all electronically controlled. I drive a 1994 MAN F90, still uses a fully manual, air split 18 speed. one of the last cool trucks, before all the electronics, and EURO regulations kicked in.
@@williambaker2963 first one I ever rode in. I was 5. My uncle drove a 1969 dark blue. I think it had a Cummins but not sure and hes no longer around to ask :(
THANKS ANDREW, ITS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU, IM A RETIRED TRUCKER, PUT 50 YEARS ON THE ROAD, AND THAT SOUND OF THE DIESEL ENGINE CAUGHT MY EAR, I GUESS I MISS IT IN A LOT OF WAYS. I GUESS WHEN IT GETS IN YOUR BLOOD TO BE A TRUCKER, ITS THERE FOR LIFE. I WISH YOU WELL, AND HOPE ALL YOUR ROADS ARE SMOOTH AND YOU RETURN HOME SAFE FROM EVERY RUN. THANKS AGAIN.
Watching this is like taking a ride down Memory Lane. I drove a Transtar for a while back in the early 80s to pull a 45' refrigerated trailer. It had a 350 Cummins & Fuller 13 speed. But I don't remember using the clutch near as much as this guy is, except maybe in heavy traffic. Thanks for posting
My Dad drove 1 of these for Griffin oil in Suffolk, Virginia. Hauled fuel too. Fuel all winter , tobacco to RJ Reynolds tobacco in the summer to Winston Salem N.C.. Drove a 72 white 9000 before this . Needed truck with a sleeper.
You are the real deal , these trucks made America great and paved the way for all the technology of more modern rigs. 8v71 one button thirteen speed Jake brake ..there was not too many options back then but this truck had more than most I remember. It's great to hear that sound again always liked the international sound cause they used 4"pipe into the muffler and it was a tighter sound wen you wound it up. Oh yeah seat belts were not the norm when this truck was made nor were electric wipers. Like the saying goes there are truck drivers and there are people who drive trucks , you are a truck driver.
Gary Carpenter....."always liked the international sound cause they used 4"pipe into the muffler"..... NOT True. The reason that the 8V71's in the Transtars sounded the way they did/do.... is because for some unexplained reason, they used "center outlet" manifolds on them, and they also used the 4" pipes on the 4070B with the V12, which is why they kept burning the valves in them. International's design team was not too "bright" when it came to engine setups for their trucks sometimes, especially with the Detroits. They did fine with the 6-71 and the 8-71T. I had another Owner-Op friend who bought a new 4070A in 1972.... and didn't mind how it ran, but intensely disliked the tinny sound of it, so I switch exhaust manifolds for him and the exhaust system, also replaced the single 5" air intake system with a split ("Y") intake on the blower from a Pete conventional with 7" pipes to the blower as well as twin intake stacks and filter boxes with 8" pipes and "scoops" from the top of the cab, then switched out the N60 injectors (290hp) for Green Tag N80s, advanced the timing 2 degrees and reset the governor to 2,450 with 5" exhaust into Riker "mufflers" resulting in 458 hp in direct (of course) at 2,380 rpm, and picked up nearly 1.2 mpg. International was "infamous" for "choking" the Detroits using small air intake systems and both small Intake and Exhaust on the V12s and burning the valves.... unless someone was smart enough to open them up and let them breathe.
2 Stroke Diesel Power By advancing the timing 2 degrees I guess that gives a fraction more time for combustion to occur counter the extra air and bigger injector size. The 8V71T came out in 1975 I think to keep up with the 350 Cummins
Great seeing that old girl still eating up the road! She clean luv her...keep taking care of her and she will keep making u happy. Nice video great driveing.
In the late 70's I traveled the continental u.s. with my father and mother in the same exact year and model all before first grade .Only thing was different was ours was Mayflower green and yellow . Still have wonderlust till this day !! Nice rig man ! Adding this in .... Still love Johnny Cash's I've been everywhere.
8v 71. the reason it is so shinny after all these years is that ol' Detroit has been spraying 30w from the headlights to the taillights. fan stat, shutters, double nickel ac (both windows open @55 mph). fuller rto9513 trans. that one looks like it has power steering. some of the earlier 4000 cab overs and 4070A's had center point steering (no power steering). "keep on truckin"
I remember seeing these when i grew up in the 1970's....you cud see the interstate from the primary school where i went...id watch the trucks going bk n forth wishing i was in one of em .....
I'd love to see these old corn binders on the road once more. Learned how to drive in one that had a 400 Cummins and a Fuller. Had to make her scream to shift
Then listen to this 8V71 in Austaralia google search this '' Crawlin the Hume 2019 part 2'' at the 2mins 30 mark you'll see a red white 4000 sounds real good.
I was 26 years old and drove a 1960 Emeryville five speed Fuller with twin screws and 3 speed diffs; hauling wood shavings and prepared logs for cabins. Driver is very good; sounds bring back memories- I’m 70 yoa now
They had a real high torque curve. If you let the engine drop below 1800rpm they would go down on their knees. A lot of old time truck drivers used to call the Detroit diesel Yamahas, because of they were a two stroke engine like the motorcycles.
Always love that Detroit sound. Started out with commer knockers then moved to TK Bedfords with 6v53s 9sp roadrangers and 2speed diffs. Thought I was made when I moved up to T line Inters and 350 Cummins..
Sounds like a 318 very nice I had one in an old Pete cab over in the 70 s those were the days only 19 at that time how I would to go back thank you for sharing
I have watched this video over and over this man is a Pro gearjammer! There is another video of him Driving a truck with a Cummings or a Cat engine he drives and shifts this truck totally different, like my Uncle Jim Always said You GOT TO KEEP YOUR FOOT IN THE DETROITS, My Uncle's Trucks always had 350 or 400 Cummings or 425 Cats in them.
Personally, I love the sound of that old screamin Jimmy but would sure hate to have to drive one 60K miles a year. Guys who did must have ended up def.
So much fun! Took me a while to realize that was the unique shift knob that had 3 positions--low range, high range firect, and then the third position was overdrive split.
Great truck, I had one. 318 Detroit with 13 speed. It never let me down in four years. Seat Belts??? We don't need no stinking seatbelts!! Great video.
Haven't heard that term in a long time, when I was a kid all IH trucks were corn binders, Mack's were bulldogs, Brockway was husky and freightliner was freight shakers and so on. They all had nicknames.
