1973 Maverick Grabber 332 Stroker first test drive

This is the first test drive of an 8 month build. It's a very clean 1973 Maverick Grabber that has been converted to a top loader 4 speed. The engine is a 332 Scat Stroker, with Dart Aluminum heads, roller cam, MSD, etc. During the build we also installed an SSBC 4 wheel disc brake conversion. My wife was trying to film the "maiden voyage" and the camcorder batteries went dead. She was relegated to the front porch using the AC adapter. We will get it out on the road for more footage soon....

Reminds me of the 72 I had. I alway felt the Maverick was overlooked.

My dad had a 72 mod Maverick with the 302 Boss engine and 4 speed manual gearbox, man that car was a blast when I was a kid. He never lost a race in that car, not sure of the quarter mile times but it had way more power than Ford advertised it at 😉

Beautiful little Ford, good job friend. Your successful born-again Maverick makes me wish I had a big enough garage to buy a Comet cousin to your car. Good luck & good health from Massachusetts! Jr.

My first car that ran lol was a 72 Maverick 200 co 6 cylinder auto that I drove for a few years...then I gave it to my father who drove it like 50 miles round trip to work most daily for another 3 or so years until the Pennsylvania roads took it to its rusty grave. Someday I would love to have another 72 version of the Grabber like this one painted flat black with old school aluminum slotted mags etc.

If I would have had your Maverick back in the day, I'd have kept her. Mine was a turdball three on the tree straight six. You don't see these old Mavericks very often, so it's nice to see yours turn out so nice. I bet you get a lot of "I used to have one of these" stories. Great job on the build!

Nicely done -- I love the paint scheme! Kind of funny how the Maverick was the kind of car I would have groaned about having to drive in high school and now I find myself drawn to owning one as part of my collection! Hope you enjoyed it while you had it!

I agree, a 73 with a 72 Grabber hood. My son found a 74. We put 73 bumpers and quarter extensions on it and a 72 Grabber hood. It really changed the look of the car. Of course the 18" wheels, a 9" disc brake rear end and a few other nice touches didn't hurt. Thanks for the comment.

I agree with you. They were a bit of an anomaly (I've heard comments like "my grandpa had one of those"). They are now becoming quite popular. Parts on eBay are bringing some insane prices. The one in this video belongs to my best friend. He bought it from me, we did a large part of the work after he bought it. I am building a 1970 V8, 4-Speed Maverick right now. Hopefully will be running this summer. :)

*Whistles* Absolutely gorgeous grabber Pikespeak67! This was very tastefully done, from the beautiful paint, to the powerhouse! This is probably the nicest grabber I've ever seen, which happens to be my favorite muscle car :). How much is that rare 332 stroker putting out? Around 400hp I'd imagine? Man I'd love to hear the finished exhaust, sounds good as is already!
@Pikespeak67
@Pikespeak67 10 лет назад
Thank you cybertree. It did turn out very well. It definitely gets some attention when my friend gets it out on the local streets. It's one of my favorites as well. I've had and built over 10 of them through the years. We estimate the engine to be putting out in the range of 350hp conservatively. The exhaust was capped up, but wasn't quite sealing properly. We had to change out the flanges and added a pair of cut-outs to make it easier to "uncap" it. It really sounds good and is quite fast. Makes for a fun test-drive (:
@Pikespeak67
@Pikespeak67 8 лет назад
+cybertree Thank you. I initially owned the car, it now belongs to my best friend. It's a very sanitary drive-able car. Yes, we suspect the stroker is putting out in the range of 350-400 HP. It's impressively fast. A Top-Loader 4 speed and a practical set of gears with a posi rear diff makes it launch quite well. It's a lot of fun to drive. I too am a big fan of Mavericks. I have built more than 10 of them. This one and the one I built after this one are my 2 favorites.

I think they really ruined the looks of the Maverick in 1974. My son bought a 74 Maverick, and we converted it to 1973 bumpers, and it looks really cool. Building a Maverick to this level is going to cost well over 10K. That's if you do most of the work yourself. If you need to have it done, it will be a lot more. We were able to do everything except the machine work in our shop. Your engine would not need to be this radical to be fun. This is a nasty small block. We will be making a quarter mile run this spring.

And you knew exactly what I was talking about. Or you would have said "What do you mean by Grabber Hood" But no. Like the keyboard warrior you clearly are. You decided to call me a troll. IMO... for a car like that that paint job looks WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too expensive.... nice but too nice.. then again i have a thing where i like cars to show their age/ rat rods.. anyway cool ride none the less.. btw what frame structure do those have? some where along the line i heard full frame with an unboltable rear section?? then again i live in a area where no one builds/ drives these anymore.. i was a kid when my parents had 1 back in early 80s..dont recall what yr or if it was a comet or maverick... but it was that light sky blue color much like this 1..
@cybertree
@cybertree 10 лет назад
lewk_warm This was an original color, and it "matches" the price because this restoration was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY expensive. Are you saying you like it less because it has a nice paint job? I mean, I think rat rods look cool rugged too, but not every car will look cool patina'd. This is basically a show car now, it's beautiful and looks tastefully done too, it kept it's classic styling with the "over-expensive" paint job.(btw that paint job probably wasn't THAT expensive, it does look amazing though, better than rust IMO)
@Pikespeak67
@Pikespeak67 10 лет назад
The Maverick is a unibody type car. No part of the sub-frame is un-boltable. There is a front frame, and a rear frame that are not connected to each other, but are secured to the floor of the vehicle. Because of the horsepower of this engine, we fabricated a set of sub-frame connectors (ties), to strengthen the frame.
