One of the best Stags I've seen, a credit to the owner. I had no idea the Triumph V8 would rev to 6,500 rpm without self-destructing...

Hi Andrew Graham, We're not going to test that 6500 RPM threshold :-) Lou

From 1970 to 1975 the _car_ was well made and fitted out in Liverpool, with little automation. The cars were loaded onto trucks then taken to Coventry 120 miles away. This was where the problems were. There, only the drivetrains were fitted. The castings for the two heads were subbed out to two companies. One changed the internals, without Triumph's knowledge, restricting the water flow. This caused overheat problems. So if you had one, or two, of the poor heads you had big cooling problems. The first batch of cars had poor head gaskets that failed. The purchasing department bought cheap gaskets that were not the same as used on the test cars. These tended to fail. All the recommendations to adapt the cooling system, *should* be implemented. Retired Triumph engineers fully approve this move.

I love the Stag. Awhile back I used to own a 1980 Triumph TR8 with the Rover 3.5 V8 and it was just incredible and the sound it made was just unreal, man it was fun!

Hi Clark, This is one of my early videos and I'm sure I was rushing, slightly nervous, and learning. When Viewers share (good or bad) that helps me get better. Bottom line, it's ok, I'm learning, and HAVING FUN :-). Glad you're along for the ride.

I absolutely love the Triumph Stag. They need the available aftermarket remedies for their engine design faults installed, though. Larger radiator, electric cooling fans, coolant filters, etc coupled with RIGOROUS maintenance are essential to preserving the engine, which makes such a beautiful sound.

@stagweberVMad

+70Kenny I and many of my friends in the UK run our stags with the original size radiators, and original viscous coupled cooling fan (no electric fan or coolant filters required). But some aftermarket modifications can make life easier, and also protect the engine from overheat. For exmaple fitting a proper header tank with a level sensor is a no-brainer for me.

The car was considered for Rover V8 fitting, however the initial thought was that the car would need lengthening by 4 inches. Subsequent fitting of this engine proved this not the case.

The Triumph Stag is a fun car to zoom around in during the spring and summer months if you can find a good one. Even when they first came out, they had a reputation of being unreliable do to overheating issues ( unless maintained religiously) and electrical problems.

Brady Dog This engine was new, complex( for the time) and was not fully tested and developed in a rush to get them to the US; Quality control in the 70’s was not good! The Triumph company was forced into a merger into a giant group BL in 1968 and Harry Webster ( chief Engineer for Triumph) was moved elsewhere; He wanted to fit the ordinary triumph straight six till the OHC V8 was ready ( they were trying to get the Fuel injection right .... Spen King, the new Chief yielded to corporate pressure and rushed the V8 with an eye on the US market... It didn’t turn out well. I wish Leyland Trucks ( Pre 1968 owners) would have bought Lucas out ( who made but failed to get the injection-right)

The roll bar was to stiffen the shell. During development, the car was suffering from scuttle shake so the roll bar was added. The Stag was a 2000 with the roof removed and the wheelbase shortened and THAT V8 engine fitted. The vast majority of Stag had automatic transmission (Borg Warner 35) so no surprise there were so few that left the factory with the manual gearbox (although many will have had them retrofitted). The owner forgot to mention the aftermarket gauge (oil pressure?) under the dash. I liked the knob for opening the quarterlight. I also liked the quick-release steering column adjuster. A pity Triumph didn't fit that to the Dolomite.

My husband had one of these stags way back in 1976 ....the V8 engine was an absolute nightmare .... a total failure.....the car was astounding though ..... he converted the engine to a Ford RS3100 V6 .... he could have put the Rover V8 in it but would have had to modify the bonnet etc .... the V6 RS3100 was a far better engine all round and actually out performed the original V8.

hi lou, it's unusual to see a stag with the original 3.0 engine. most I have seen over the last 20 years have had the original engine (two 1.5 cc thrumph 4 pots welded together badly.) when seazed swapped for the rover p6 and p5 3.5 cc Buick derived 215 cubic inch. much more reliable v8. Nice to see the original engine in place. thanks for a cool video lou

Hi Jason Meehan, Hmmm, did not know that about the engines. Thank you for sharing. You're welcome regarding the "cool video", Lou
@djtaylorutube
@djtaylorutube 6 лет назад
@Jason Meehan, don't let the evolution of an engine design influence comments about how production engines were made! Production engines were a cast block, not a couple of Dolly engines welded together. A quick cursory web search would have furnished a more appropriate answer.
