I this short video I discuss the merits of a standard oil filter over the adaptor and screw in filters
The opinions are mine and based on real life experience
My screw on adaptor was bought from a well know supplier in the late 1990s and abandoned shortly after. but still...
Thumbs up

Nice hearing Classic Gold use the Unipart filter numbers , Can you see David Hamilton and Tony Blackburn sitting in a factory packing these ???

Great to watch I use K&N oil filters on 2 RRC and a D2 that don't get a lot of use and the oil light goes out in 3-4 seconds

Always use BL Unipart NOS filters

be very careful of those NoS filters that have the card o-ring top and bottom, they shift when hot and will allow the oil to bypass the filter completely. The Classic Gold filters are good for the Stag

Why oil change with only 3000 miles? On the clock
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics Год назад
older engines regardless of their condition will pollute the oil with fuel. this then thins the oil and reduces the efficiency. be sure when filling an older type engine with oil to use the correct spec and more importantly the correct ZDDP level

I use an adaptor, and you are absolutely right about the adaptor coming loose. Just nip it up when I change the filter. Access not a problem removing the modern type of filter with one of those 'chain' tools............. I do love your rant LOL :-)

No sure, a nice stag starts at low teens and they get more expensive as the quality of the resto improves

Surely a modern formulation 15/50 oil would be an ‘improvement’ that would give a longer change interval than the 20/50 oils of 50 years ago ? Or do Stags and XJs give their oil a really hard time ? Your old stuff looked pretty vile. Maybe the zinc is more important ?

Stags and Rover v8s are especially hash on the oils. Also bear in mind that these engines were designed, lead was used in petrol for lubrication. I would not recommend running modern oils with their detergents etc in such an old engine and follow the advice of specialists such as Classic Oils at Bicester 👍

Ha! Brings back memories! the last Stag I owned I converted it to the screw on adaptor and never had a problem, must have been lucky. One thing I used to do when the oil was at the drip stage, was to jack up the rear passenger side and you could get, another half pint of old oil drained out. Your car appears to have been registered in Coventry [RW prefix] and some fun trivia for you....Stuart Francis the England captain, bought a new stag in 74 and so did Ed' Stewart the DJ...i was a total Stag geek and a pain in the arse at club meetings, you know the sort who knows the size of every nut, bolt and interior colour code....also Aston Martin modified an all black stag and named it The 'Tickford Stag', ... Thanks Sub 777

I think it more likely that I was unlucky with the adaptor. My point is that folk seem happy to spend upwards of £50 on an adaptor, that then needs another £20 for the tool to remove it and make just as much mess, once a year, as they would with the paper cartridge 😋 Yes my car was registered by the factory under the "home delivery export scheme" any ideas? Heritage certificate tells me that the car was sold through the Triumph Dealership in Hong Kong, but doesn't list a ship that might have transported it there. I do enjoy a rivet counter, especially the levels of knowledge from why I might learn something new 🍻👍

@@churchhouseclassics That scheme was really just a tax dodge so you didn't pay VAT on a new car. The tax was added at the country of destination. Your car will have been owned by British Leyland and then sold as an export but not exported...confusing I know! The RW reg means, it was direct from the cowley plant in Coventry and probably used or displayed by Leyland. It would have had a Pink log book also instead of the brown one. All the press cars had the RW in the reg...the first Stag [LD1] was RRW 97 H [I think] and I think the white stag used in the film 'Straw dogs' was a press car also. You do realise you have just opened up a dormant cavern that was closed years ago, I will keep sending you trivia as I remember it.Thanks Sub777

Just looking at the filter assembly mine has (from bottom to top) the circlip, then the valve, then a seal, then a metal washer & then the spring. I reckon you've got the circlip in the wrong place it should hold the valve in place. Mine's the AC Delco housing. For some reason the clip isn't shown in the parts catalogue Great video's BTW really enjoying them
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 4 года назад
the clip is just an r-clip, I guess that it stops the non return valve and spring from falling out when you remove the filter. The non return valve should sit snug in the bottom of the filter. the spring sits between it and the bottom of the bowl. This forces the filter element up against the face of the block. Glad you are enjoying the vids 👍🍻

I'm a subscriber, and most of the videos I watch on RU-vid are either 4WD/Land Rover related, or photography, my other interest. Bloody RU-vid, however, sees fit to suggest all sorts of shite that haven't the farthest relationship to the channels I watch. Conspiracy mavens, Bollywood Indian stuff, etc.... God help me if I click on something that I have a minor curiosity about; I'll get similar videos for months. No wonder people watch, using 'incognito' mode on their browsers.

a damned good point, and yes the practice of showing you pages of stuff that might interest you because you watched one video on how to unblock a vacuum cleaner is irritating. 👍🍻

Interesting as always Richard.. Ever heard about mixing 1% two stroke oil in with modern fuels if running strombergs? Read something on another channel about this.

Thanks Struan, never heard of 1% two stroke idea, though a splash of Castrol R is going to make it smell almost as nice as it sounds

Lucky you noticed on the drive before jumping in and fucking off! At 40 psi you can lose A LOT of oil very fast. You’d have seized the engine before the oil light came on! I had an oil pressure capillary break by the filter. How small is that pipe ? 1/32 ? Lost five litres out of seven in just over a mile ( followed the oil trail back to source) if I hadn’t stopped at The Sloop for a beer and to walk the dog, on a hot day trundle round the lanes, I’d have ruined my newly fitted 200 tdi ! Gauge still not connected a year on !
@churchhouseclassics
@churchhouseclassics 4 года назад
For the Stag I now use a braided hose for the oil pressure gauge, had one of the standard plastic jobbies break on me, only it sprayed oil all over the back of the dash which then dripped down onto my bare legs, gaaaah that oil was hot! For the Stag I think I used a Mini pressure hose, the fixing ends will all be different though
@highdownmartin
@highdownmartin 4 года назад
Church House Classics medieval early warning system! Seriously keep a sharp eye on the condition of that pipe, if you don’t noitice the gauge drop, when the oil light comes on ( if you notice!) that just announces that the oil pump has just run out of anything to pump. I’m going back to a capillary at some point but with an oil light switch right behind the gauge, with a bright warning light that I can’t miss.

Informative video Richard. As you say not all improvements are improvements. I have a 3.9L Discovery motor in my Stag so don't have this problem.

@@churchhouseclassics The 3.9L is a serpentine EFI motor. I wanted to keep it simple so removed the EFI and fitted a new 500cfm Edelbrock AVS2 carb. I have some RU-vid video on the car, check out 'Rowan's Triumph Stag'.

Just a few pointers, warm the engine first . makes the oil drain better, and start the oil draining while you remove the filter and you are not hanging around waiting for the sump to empty.

Stag oil filter is millimetres away from the exhaust downpipe. warming the engine up before changing the oil filter? rather you than me sir
@johnleesdad
@johnleesdad 4 года назад
@@churchhouseclassics I am talking about warm oil not hot oil, and the filter drops a small amount of oil when unscrewed, I have done it this way for forty years of stag ownership and it seems to work fine, but each to his own
