My Dad has a white 1974 thing that has been sitting in a barn for the last 10 years and I have been wanting to restore it with him. I am 15yo and Love getting my hands dirty and learning. I appreciate the level of attention to detail that you went because I would do the same. Maybe your series of videos can help me convince him to pull our thing back into the sunlight and hopefully return it to its former glory.

Well that would be cool to see you pulling it out of the barn... if you have any questions just let me know.

Watson, that is a great video, putting all the rubber on yourself is a definite money saver, I usually triangle cut the fender beading for the bolt holes on type 3s and type 1s, but I like the way you did it. So I am going to try it that way on the Thing that I am working on. For my next upgrade I am going to pull the bumper and fenders, repaint the bumpers, clean up the fender wells and reinstall with new beading. Thanks for the video!

Thanks... well hopefully it's easier for you that way. I'm getting closer and closer to finishing mine!

Thank you, for the informative video. My friend's dad owned one growing up, used to think it was a blast, and learned to drive a stick on one. Imagine the VW Thing was essentially the German Jeep of WW2, why not 4X4 or a bigger engine. Then for years to run out that crappy VW Bug, underpowered, with no heat.

Not sure where you sourced your beading and rubber but the body beading from the Thing Shop is pre-notched at the top pivot brackets. It also has additional padding on top of the door post. Probably costs a bit more as well. Just got my 74 back from the paint's as well. I went with a Coyote Brown exterior, color matched interior bedliner and trunk, with black black bedliner for the chassis floor. I did stay with a smooth finish for the engine bay hoping it will be easier to keep clean. The fender welting for fiberglass fender are different from the ones for metal fender. The metal fender welting is a whole lot easier. I ended up get a few longer bolts as many of my originals were striped on the ends. Made life a whole lot simpler.

I got the Thing as a project. It was completely disassembled with boxes of new parts. I'm just using what came with it and trying to piece it back together.... a little hard as I didn't have the reference I would have by taking it apart.

I had a 74 Thing and delevired for Dominoe's in it during a year in college. Even worked great in the Utah snow. I took gas pedal off and mounted a large skateboard wheel in it's place. Can't believe I sold it for $1500 so I could buy a Scout II.

Your fender beading are the wrong ones

They are the ones that came with it. Which ones should I have? From what I can tell they look the same as the ones off "The Thing Shop" website. Only thing they had though was for metal fenders, so not sure as I have fiberglass ones...idk

@@watsonst04 hard to explain. Mine are steel fender and the beading is much thicker and has a step in it. Nothing like the ones you used on yours. Ones you used are for vw bugs.

@@antech555 well I guess I'm just gonna roll with the one's I have for now....lol. thanks for the info!
