I was born in September this year in Cullman. The Tide was rolling. To so many in my community, they were glad Ozzie Newsome was wearing Crimson and White. He put on a show in the 1972 Class 3A Championship for Colbert County in a blowout win over Cullman on their home field. Shug vs Bear. I've got a set of dinner trays with both coaches photographs on them from the 1975 game.
I know folks would like to see some of the 1970s games here, but I think there were a number of years ABC couldn't air the game because Auburn was on some kind of probation. Of course, there might be game films from the Bear Bryant Show or the Shug Jordan Show around to cover those.
Ozzie Newsome...Phil gargis and Thad Flanagan were all teammates at colbert county high school...oh and a pretty good power fwd named Leon Douglass also went to cchs at the same time
Any of you True Blue & Orange Tiger's fans know when the "EGOP" type facemask was first worn at Auburn? And was Auburn the very first team, college or professional to wear them? Seems like for a long time only the RBs that played there in the 80's wore them. Cribbs, Brooks, James etc.
"You're looking at pretty Janet Lynn," says the commercial announcer at 5:20. Announcer would be fired today for calling an obviously pretty ice skater...."pretty."
This was for a special edition of Wide World of Sports airing between games of a doubleheader, which wouldn't have gone into prime time as there was an ABC News Closeup on Jimmy Hoffa (33:47) airing that night.
@aaron short "If you're a youngster at Alabama, go get a football and start throwing it around the backyard with pops." He called Katherine Webb beautiful and said quarterbacks get all the good looking women. He said AJ was a lucky man. He never ever used the term "hot" Almost anyone with a brain feels the same way as you and I do about how the media over reacted.
Bryant was so predictable and conservative. There were 20 times in this game where a play action pass would score a td. The barn were putting 11 in the box and not even looking for a pass.
If you find the first half of this game from ABC I would love to see it. If you come across any other Iron Bowls from the 70’s that were a regional telecast on ABC would live to see those too. Thanks.
