Now that the body is ready for paint and the chassis is pretty much assembled it is time to look at the engine. This is not the original engine of the car and we actually don't know much about it so it is a good idea to strip it and inspect it closely

Nice work Mine was way worse and I had to have it bored 20 over and valve seat put in and ground. Got it back 4 weeks ago and will start assembly after I finish putting rear suspension on and the diff. etc . Nice work Elin.

Without the valve stem seals you will see lots of exhaust smoke. There is always enough lube by passing the seals to lube the valve stems. These positive valve stem seals are a product of emission controls. Tom Martin.

I enjoyed this one a lot! I kind of wish that I had the garage space to pull an old engine apart and put it back together a few times for confidence.

There's some spray chemical 'gasket remover' that is quite effective, one I've used is made by Loctite. Plus you can use a gasket scraper (they are also made in tough plastic, to avoid scratching the surface). New valves don't appear to be too expensive (around $12 each).

I bet the oil pressure was a bit low due to worn main bearings, but the Previous owner assumed it was the oil pump.

As always, thanks for sharing. Helicoil? Three angle valve job? Helicoils are not junk by the way. I watched two videos done by engine building machine shops where they did a pull test on various thread repair inserts in aluminum and the helicoil won out over the competitors both times. Suprising! Great product if they can be used. My 2 cents. Thanks and Cheers

I bought the Pertronics ignition from Paul! 😉 Sorry, didn’t know it came off that engine.

I did not see how much play there was of the valves in the valve guides ? I wonder if they were very worn and that is why the valve seals were fitted ?

Hey Elin, long shot I know. But do you happen to do mobile work? I've got a 76 spitfire I'm trying to figure out. Thanks.

I am sorry, Phil, I don't even have time enough for the cars I have in the garage.

Weird that the centre 2 pistons weren't carboned up....

He cleaned them before shooting that segment, to show piston size numbers I think.

Are you sure Triumph didn't use self-tapping screws on the oil pan? Asking for a friend.

Did you measure movement for the thrust washers?

Nope, I forgot :) but it was a lot. Well this crank is not going back in so it doesn’t really matter

Can’t understand how a good mechanic could strip bolts and replace them with sheet metal screws. Maybe he’d make a better butcher

Not a mechanic....home mechanic yes....people are too lazy or cheap to go get a proper fastener....they are available...sometimes you gotta go to the right place...
