I work as cashier at a grocery store. About a year ago I was working a closing shift as a bagger and I had walked and elderly gentleman out to his car and this was what he had. A blue 1977 TR6 with a factory hard top. His wife was sitting in the passenger seat quietly reading through a book. The early florida spring night air blew coolly and softly through the air, and I asked the man how long he had the car and where he got it. As he popped the trunk he told me that he had ordered it in 1977 after he got a promotion at the stock brokering firm he worked for in Jacksonville. He relayed to me in perfect detail the day and time when he got the phone call to come down to the docks to pick it up. He told me how his wife drove him down in the families sedan and how he watched it being unloaded from the ship. He said it was like love at first sight. The car has now (at the time i saw him) some 100,000 miles on it and it still looks as fresh as it was when it was new. The man told me he was in his 80s but still did most of the routine maintenance himself and how his grandson helped him out on the more complicated repairs. It’s stories like this that’s attract me to older cars, because sometimes the best part about these cars is you can always tell when the car has a story, and you feel privelaged to be a part of and to continue that story so that more people can know about it,

Tr6 was always called Tr6 in both UK and US. Tr5 of UK was equipped with Lucas fuel injection on 2.5 inline 6. Tr250 was US only version of Tr5, equipped with twin stromberg carbs with emission control device. You are confusing Tr5 and Tr6.

I owe much of my love for cars to this thing. When my Mom learned to drive her brother hatched a plot to get the family car all to himself by convincing her Dad to swap the autotragic LTD for a TR6. Long story short: Ma had none of it and learned stick anyway, proceeding to dust many a MG in the process. The triumph was long gone before I came along, but Mom's stories about it, and her lasting affinity for the manual transmission right up until her knees couldn't handle the heavy clutch in her Ramcharger were a huge impression.

I was in college when I drove my first TR6. I had a friend who had one and loved it. Finally came across one on a car lot. It was in rough condition but drive-able, and after a test drive I was hooked. Unfortunately my parents weren't as enamored and I stayed in my trusty Ford XL for another year, after which they got me a used LTD to go to grad school. Moved to NW Arkansas where you have twisty, mountainous roads just made for cars like MGs and TR6s. As fate would have it, I ended up with a roommate who drove a TR6! Better yet, he didn't hesitate to pitch me the keys and let me take it out for hours at at time. I got to do some real driving in the hills and with the roof down, it was an experience I've never forgotten. Yeah, I'm a Boomer of grandad age now but I'd give willingly give my left nut for a refurbished TR6.

I had a '74 TR6; I bought it on Ebay when I was deployed in the middle east back in 2003 -- I put in a bid in when I was on on R&R, drunk on rot gut bathtub swill. Later that day I found out that I actually "won" it. I had it shipped to my mothers place; I still had about 6 months left on my orders and I didn't see it until the following April. I don't know what I was thinking but I decided to take a victory lap and drove it all the way from Corpus Christi, TX all the way to Wilmington, NC to see a girl I had been exchanging letters with -- I literally rolled into the hotel parking lot when the car died. As luck would have it, that very weekend there was a British Car club meet up in the parking lot at the hotel across the street. A guy there helped me nurse my car back to health and after a 3 week stay there, I drove all the way back only to have my brakes fail on a bridge on the way back. I practically coasted the whole way home. It never ran after that, I sold it to go to grad school about 4 years later. Not sure if I regret it, but 10 years later I have a '79 Spitfire sitting on blocks in my carport reminding me of the heartache.

Owned TR3A, TR4 and TR4A (independent rear suspension) and thought they were all great cars, all bought used never could afford new. The TR5s and TR6s in Britain in the early 1970s were still too costly for my budget and now....forget it! But one of my best drives ever was at night in the TR3 coming back from watching the RAC Rally cars thundering along tiny forest tracks at blinding speeds in the Kielder Forest, Northumberland (wild and woolly country), I found myself moving along very briskly on tiny country roads, uphill and down dale, in a sweeping rythm of surefootedness and speed. That car, agricultural though it was in it's 4 cylinder motor and very basic suspension, performed like a star that night, never forgot it!

My grandpa had one of these. He found it in a field, like one does in upstate NY, in pretty rough shape. I think he found it in the late 80's or early 90's. The engine was still good and the body was salvageable. The interior was gone. At some point, someone replaced the seats with a pair taken out of a small airplane. No idea how, or why. Just something something upstate NY. He bought it off the people who owned the land (they didn't even know it was there) and spent years fixing this thing up in his garage. There was this chain hanging from the garage ceiling from when he had to lift the engine out of this thing. But anyways, he restored it down to every little detail and would take me with him on back-road joyrides when I was a kid. It was one of the the best things about going to visit. Still wish he didn't have to sell it before he passed. His TR6 got me interested in cars in the first place because it was so different from anything I had seen before. Anyway, if anyone bought a cherry red TR6 off an old guy in Big Flats you take good care of that car.

I've had three of them. You have to do something about handling. Koni's on the front, three quarter valves on the rear. 205 70 15 Michelin radials. Heat shield, cam, and exhaust. Electronic ignition. It's like flying a Cessna, you have to maintain your air speed. Pick roads that match your car.

On any piston engine the air-fuel mixture comes to a screeching halt in the combustion chamber so whether after that it must go left, right, forward or aft doesn't matter at all in terms of mass flow losses. The problem with the reverse flow heads is the intake and exhaust ports have to occupy the same space and they suffer for it.

Triumph TR6 was probably the most macho small roadster, it's no 'hairdressers' car like an MG B or a MX-5 a big 'bloke' can drive this and nobody doubts his masculinity with that punched up face and cut off rear end. This and the Staaaaaag were working class heroes (That is when they were working)
@Max-gz7ik
@Max-gz7ik 5 лет назад
I wouldn't say the Stag was working class. They were too expensive. A TR6 (in todays money) would cost around £18,000 a Stag would be around £32,000.
@PMGF
@PMGF 5 лет назад
@@Max-gz7ik I fear you're taking my poetic writing too literally, you see you don't own a hero, you look up to them. The Stag is actually a pretty terrible car but it was desirable like a Mk1 Capri or later a Sierra Cozza. In a world of high rolling Jaguar XKEs and Jensen Interceptors Triumphs where something everyday folk would see occasionally on the street and know if they worked hard & saved it could be achievable.
@Max-gz7ik
@Max-gz7ik 5 лет назад
@@PMGF As a Stag owner I'm going to disagree on the terrible part. For a car that started production in the '60s it feels incredibly modern to drive. The T-Bar setup means the chassis is very stiff and it drives beautifully. I will agree that they were more achievable of you were a hard worker, particularly compared to the likes of Jagaurs and Rovers of the same era.
@PMGF
@PMGF 5 лет назад
@@Max-gz7ik I didn't mean to offend you nor want to get into semantics but In my opinion they were very desirable cars but poorly engineered. The T-Bar was it's USP. But Triumph management was incompetent and they were too focused on competing with Rover even though they were part of the same company! So many parts on the Stag (and other Triumphs) could have been simplified or shared but ohhhh no Triumph management had a point to prove and pissed away money they didn't have. As a Stag owner you'll know the engine is a nightmare, pair a company with bigger aspirations than budget with 1970's British Leyland build quality and you get a car ranked among one of the worst in the world. Now I think that's really harsh because it's so utterly drop dead gorgeous, as a kid I admired them but just like Lancias as an adult I don't want to own one.
@Max-gz7ik
@Max-gz7ik 5 лет назад
@@PMGF Oh not offended at all, I know they have their issues. In this day and age though they're pretty solid. The main issue with the Triumph 3.0 is the radiator, if they weren't assembled correctly they couldn't cool a cup of tea. Since having it rebuilt the car clocked 100k with no issues at all!

I had a 1980 TR8 roadster, with the 3.5 l Buick/Rover V8. It had been heavily tinkered with by the previous owner, and passed everything but the gas station. My northern Canadian ownership , prompted storage for at least five months, and the ubiquitous wait for the winter sand and gravel to be removed from the streets prior to driving in the spring, resulted in maybe four to five months of actual driving. It was 1988, and to this day, was my favourite car. It smelled of gasoline and there was a slight mustiness when the top was up. Off the line, the car surprised a few Mustang 5.0 l owners, as like I previously said, the car had been heavily tinkered with. The sound at low rev when pulling into the parking lots on a Friday night, had me opening the bonnet more often than I was driving....all those years ago! I had the car less than two years, with two full winters bookending one full summer, and another half summer at the end, when I sold the car for way more than I paid for it.

I have no personal affinity for the Triumph, but where you guys shot this brings back two distinct memories. I'm born and raised Poconos for context. At 4:15 you drive past my grandmother's old house in central NJ. She lived there from the early 40s up until 2014 when we had to move her to assisted living in Bethlehem because of dementia. Me being born in 1987 I have nearly 30 years of memories of that property, especially the last 5 years of her ownership where I took care of it most weekends. Second, where you guys did the garage shots is very personal as well. That used to be a Dodge dealership and my grandmother was good friends with the now late owner John. Around 1999 I discovered Dodge Vipers and it became the first car I would be obsessed with. John knew this and would just give me all of the literature he could get on Vipers to satisfy my fanboyism. Memorial Day weekend 2001 he came by my grandmother's and wanted me to go downtown to the dealership to see something. They had brought in a newer 1st gen RT/10 as a loaner for some pharma rep (Pfizer is nearby so the phallic symbolism isn't lost). He took me into that same garage and it was my first upclose look at a Viper. I wasn't old enough to drive, but he let me sit in the damn thing. It was the equivalent of a teenage boy grabbing his first boob. I wasn't legal to drive, let alone knew how to drive stick, so that was completely out of the question but it was enough 14 year old me. I watched this video when you first released it, but I'm just commenting now. Thank you for all that everyone does for this channel. Coming back to this video is a fun trip down memory lane and immediately appreciate it.

Something about the stance on the TR6 is just so righteous. The flared fenders, the way the wheels fit flush, somehow even those 14" wheels look massive on that car. Also tip of the hat to the owner of that particular TR6, he keeps it in lovely condition. Whoever restored that car did a great job.

Not sure what they were thinking when they designed the head but anytime you have hot exhaust manifold right beside the intake it can't be very efficient.

The A series has this and also a Siamese port set up... they run just fine the proximity of the exhaust to inlet manifold isn't an issue.

At college I was told it was done deliberately to prevent freezing carbs and create better fuel atomisation upon cold-start. Obviously as carb technology became better, and with the introduction of fuel injection, it became out dated.

With the Chrysler engine, it meant that they could lean the engine over to one side so it would clear lower hoods like on the A-bodies, while still being a long-stroke engine.

Triumphs were fun cars in their day. as were MGs and Austin Healeys. But then the Mustang came along and America's love affair with British sports cars came to an end. Pony cars and muscle cars became the darlings of America's youth back in the mid-1960 through the early 1970s.

The TR6 was my first car, in high school, earned from dish washing money. It was an exciting car to drive and look at! Had an amazing exhaust note. The 15" wheels were huge in those days. One time I raced my friend in his Chevy station wagon. His wagon went around a particular corner just fine. The TR had such lousy grip, I did a 360 into the dirt, unscathed. I will get another someday!

A friend's dad gave me a ride in one of these down some English country roads on the way back from cricket practice when I was 10 years old. It had an overdrive switch on top of the gear knob and I remember the steering wheel skipping about in his hands the same way it does in this video. We had an E36 328i at the time so the TR6 wasn't an impressive performance machine to me by any means, but it did give me a taste of the classic British roadster which I experience whenever I get a blast in an MX-5.

Hey bud, the TR5 had the fuel injection with the 6 cylinder and a TR4 styled body, we got the TR250. The TR6, a different car, had the 6 cylinder engine with the Zenith Strombergs and a newer body style. You might want to look back at that note.

I remember my Dad taking me to Crown Imports in Saint Petersburg, Florida to buy my new car. The dealer had the last TR-6 on the showroom floor. If I remember correctly it was around $6,000. We ended up buying a British Racing Green Victory Edition TR-7. The cost was $4,995 POE. Great memory! The TR-6 was the better buy but was just a little too expensive.
