i made a trip with friends and family members to canada, nunavut, whale cove, to iqaluit proximities, we were in a vw modified transporter and a this car, they made through kilemeters of road and rough terrain and moist sand\turf of tundras, without a single stop or malfunction, they were incredibly economical too. we saw the northern lights ws one of most beautiful things i saw, i have loved this car ever since, its one of the most amazing cars that have been made in my opinion, you can easily modify it and make an off road roll cage atv or whatever you want, but trust me this little beauty is amazing off road

When our '71 Beetle rusted so it was no longer street legal we used it off road and with some larger rear tires it was pretty capable. I think with some practice driving it off road, you will be impressed with where it will go.

it got stuck in the sand because it doesn't carry weight but with the four passengers the sand is peeled off by the safari one of the best cars made by the Germans

Air the tires down more than that, it will help a lot. I had an old Jeep and went off roading with a guy in a Thing. I was surprised what it would do. He stayed with me until I got into some nasty stuff I didn't think I was going to get through.

the aim of deflating the tyres is to let air out until the tyre noticeably bags and increases its footprint. In this case the tyre still seems to be too inflated @ 0:17 Every car / tyre combination is different and when you find the right pressure for your car for sand driving the benefits are amazing.

That sand doesn't play around. I had a 5 mile walk through the Ocala national Forest one night to my cabin when I sunk my 2wd beater truck while out exploring. The sugar sand was just too much lol. Never took it again and always used my new 4wd f-250 after that.

In the early 60s the first beach buggys from California (built frequently on beetle platform) already had a selective rear brake handle, where one could force the car to turn that wheel which needed to be moved in order to get the vehicle out of the sand (3:14). I wonder why VW did not do a paste and copy into the Thing. Another probem one can observe in the highlighted passage is that the driver forgot to take the wide turn option when taking the left bent, Under these circumstances, if the steering is turned too much the front wheel (3:33) will act as an obstacle of sorts, and the car might get stuck due to this too.

Does it have reduction gears like the van? I Have a home built offroad buggy. Looks a lot like the thing. I'm using a 1959 bus transaxle with reduction gears. I have never got stuck.

I wonder if you could put a 4x4 setup from an Isuzu trooper in that thing. ...and I wonder if they ever made a half-track troop carrier version? That would be cool for off-roading. I can't imagine why, but somehow I think that possibly, the minimoke was designed to rival this thing. I bet it's fun to drive tho.
