Rudy Hartono !!! A living legend, no question about it.

It was historic as for the first time not only the legendary Rudy Hartono failed to win his straight eight All England men's singles title but also his unbeaten record in all All England matches since his maiden debut in 1968. The late Svend Pri who died in 1983 had beaten Hartono in the 1973 Thomas Cup final at the Istora Senayan.But that win was not as auspicious as this straight sets win over the legendary Indonesian shuttlers. Pri had been in devastating form throughout the tournament and had routed Tjun Tjun 15-5,15-0 in the semifinal. Although only a week before Hartono had beaten Pri for the Danish Open title in Copenhagen the latter had saved his best form for the All England. In the end the great Hartono had no answer to Pri's immaculate net play and thunderous smashes.Hartono surrendered at 15-11 and 17-15. Pri's win ended the continuous unbroken run of seven All England title wins by Hartono and in the process handed the latter his first taste of defeat in an All England match.Hartono for the record had never lost an All England tie since 1968.And Pri's 1975 All England final defeat of Hartono ended it. Not only Pri avenged his 15-7,15-1 and 15-9,15-4 defeats in the 1970 and 1972 All England final,but also defeats in the 1972 Munich Olympic final for the gold which Pri lost 15-6,15-1 and also the 15-5,15-2 defeat in the final of the World Invitation in Jakarta the same year.

My father told me that Mr. Sven Pri has a cafe, and he has named one of the room is "Rudi Hartono". :)

Saya ingat pertandingan ini waktu itu (1975) saya kelas VI SD... menonton nya di TV hitam putih TV RI waktu itu .... Saat pertandingan ini di musim dingin dimana SUHU nya 16° dibawah Nol... Maka nya Rudi Hartono & Sventpri memakai sweater dalam bertanding... tapi set kedua mereka sudah tidak memakai nya lagi...

I'm impressed at how much like a modern MS game this looks (aside from the cricket jumpers, that is - and the thuds from the rackets).

That year Svend Pri was at his best and in his element. He had peaked at the right opportune time in the 1975 All England badminton championships.In the semifinals he had crushed Hartono's team mate Tjun Tjun 15-5,15-0. But as always Hartono stood in his way of winning the All England men's singles title. They had clashed three times previously in the All England with Hartono winning all of those clashes and two of those clashes were in the final of the 1970 and 1972 All England.Hartono crushed Pri in the 1970 final winning 15-7,15-1 and two years later also won comfortably in straight sets 15-9,15-4. As if that was not enough,Hartono also triumphed over Pri in the match for the gold medal in the 1972 Olympics which then was a demonstrative sport winning 15-6,15-1.Also in 1972 Hartono beat Pri 15-5,15-2 for the World Invitation title at Jakarta. But in 1973 Pri at last ended a sequence of defeats by Hartono upsetting the latter in three sets in the 1973 Thomas Cup final. Two years later Pri at last won his first and only All England title beating Hartono 15-11,17-14 .

Just my impression from the limited footage, but the speed and power of Hartono and Pri here seems to me to be every bit as impressive as what one would expect from the current highest level players.

I believe the first exponent of the fast hard hitting game was Freeman, followed by Tang and Hou and later by Liem Swie King. Currently the 21 point system has allowed veterans to remain playing competitively and we see again more of less the patient accurate playing style of the past masters in Lin Dan or Peter Gade today.

The legendary Rudy Hartono have not lost a match in the All England Badminton Championships since his debut at the Wembley Arena in March 1968 until this 1975 All England final straight sets defeat 15-11,17-14 by the late Svend Pri. Sure there were several closed three sets defeat of Elo Hansen in the quarterfinal of last year's All England and then Sture Johanssesn of Sweden in the semifinals.After it was another hard fought three sets win over Malaysia's Punch Gunalan in the final. But this match with Svend Pri was Hartono's first defeat in as many matches.In fact Pri created history by becoming the first player to beat Hartono in the All England. But before achieving that historic feat Pri had to bite the dust everytime he faced Hartono. Apart from three All England defeats to Hartono which included two All England final defeats in 1970 and 1972 Pri also suffered two other defeats in the battle for the gold in the 1972 Munich Olympics which badminton then was a demonstrative sport losing 15-6,15-1 but also in the World Invitation final at Jakarta the same year losing 15-5,15-2.

And only a week back Pri had lost yet again in three sets to Hartono in the final of the Danish Open just before the All England. But in the 1975 All England Pri was playing the best badminton of his career which not only included the memorable straight sets win over Hartono in the final but also the 15-5,15-0 demolition of another Indonesian Tjun Tjun in the semifinals. For Pri that 1975 All England beating of Hartono was his fourth over his long time rival in their head to head clashes.Only another non Indonesian player Malaysia's Tan Aik Huang had a good track record in the head to head clashes with Hartono winning five times.

What a great player, I hadn't watched a video of him, And honestly I'm great impressed, Hartono is awesome, he is no slower than Lin Dan or Lee Chong wei. I believe that he would be much better than the current top 5 if he had the same facilities back then.......Badminton World should appreciate his devotion for the sport.....

If my memory serves me right the late Svend Pri scored his first win over Rudy Hartono in the Glasgow World Invitation in 1972.There after two wins over Rudy Hartono were achieved in 1973.In the Europe vs Asia clash Pri scored a three set win over Hartono.Then in that never to be forgotten 1973 Thomas Cup final Pri scored a sensational three set win over Hartono at the Istora Senayan.That win by Pri over Hartono was Denmark's only point secured in an 8-1 defeat. Then,of course the 1975 All England straight sets final defeat of Hartono that was his fourth over the latter.

I had only read about Rudy Hortono's speed. Prakash Padukone who won the All England championship, once, said Rudy had no weaknesses in his game. He was one of the first to employ half smashes on a consistent basis to keep the shuttle down. Given the modern racquets, he would be a terror - his speed looks awesome and at par with the best of today.

The late Svend Pri of Denmark probably played the best badminton in his badminton career in his straight sets 15-11,17-15 defeat of the legendary Indonesian Rudy Hartono in the 1975 All England Badminton Championships final at the Wembley Arena. Pri who was to die eight years after this final was in devastating form as he had crushed another Indonesian Tjun Tjun 15-5,15-0 in the semifinals. And this win over Hartono in the 1975 All England final in fact was not his first over his arch rival who had defeated him in two All England finals in 1970 and 1972. Pri had defeated Hartono in the 1972 Glasgow Invitation meet in three sets.The following year he defeated Hartono twice in the Asia versus Europe clash and in the 1973 Thomas Cup final at the Istora Senayan.Both went to three sets.

Erland Kops's All England triumph was spread over the years from 1958 to 1967.In 1959,Tan Joe won then the following year(1960)it was Kops turn.He won it for another three years from 1961 to 1963.Then another Dane Kurd E.Nielsen won in 1964.In 1965 Kops regained the title only to be knocked out in the first round by Tan Yee Khan in 1966.In 1967 Kops won his seventh and last All England title beating Aik Huang in the final.

@mynahbird20000 The lighter racquets of the modern have improved defense substantially. During Hartono's era racquets were getting lighter but not to the degree they are now. Defending the singles court against a very hard well placed smash has never been easy. You mention Sture Johnsson. I saw him at his prime (1973) and thought he had perhaps the hardest smash I'd ever seen. He also moved very well so it's no surprise to me that at his best he could give Hartono trouble.

Sture Johnson actually held Hartono at game point in the 1974 AE semis but Hartono managed to claw back and won to enter the final where he had to struggle against Gunalan. Before that Johnson had beaten Hartono in an earlier tournament in Europe in straight sets.

Rudy Hartono could well have won his straight eighth All England title but Svend Pri of Denmark had other ideas. Though Hartono had been in fine form in his straight sets win over another Dane Fleming Delfs in the semifinals but in the final he found Pri whom he had conquered in two All England finals in 1970 and 1972 a different proposition altogether. Pri was so dominant that Hartono had no answer to his stinging smashes and in the end suffered a shock 15-11,17-15 defeat.It was Hartono's first ever defeat since his All England debut at the Wembley Arena in March 1968. For Pri that All England triumph was so meaningful hat when he scored the winning point he raised both his fists in sheer delight and joy.

Some films of this era has been conserved in the British Film Institute in case there are people interested in badminton of the early 70s.

Yes in the 1975 All England final Rudy Hartono played better than he did in last year's final with Punch Gunalan.Unfortunately for Hartono Pri played even better with scintillating badminton to send the former to a humiliating straight sets defeat of 15-11,17-14. Hartono had knew that he would have a tough time defending his All England title and winning it a straight eighth time after seeing Pri blasted past Tjun Tjun 15-5,15-0 in the semifinals.

Mynah Bird,Erland Kops the All England defending champion was knocked out by Malaysia's Tan Yee Khan in the first round of the 1966 All England badminton championship.If I am wrong just check the Wikipedia on past winners of the All England men's singles winners.In 1966 Aik Huang won the title beating Japan's Masao Akiyama in straight set 15-8 15-12. Aik Huang the following year lost to Kops in the final.It was Kops seventh and last All England men's singles triumph before Svend Pri won it for Denmark again in 1975. Whereas Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia ended his country long wait.He won the title in 2003 beating Chen Hong of China.

Did everyone know that Christian Hadinata was in fact the brother in law of Rudy Hartono as the former had married one of the latter's sisters.Yes Christian Hadinata did reach the 1973 final losing to his brother in law 15-4,15-2.Apart from Christian Hadinata the American Chris Kinard was also the brother in law of Rudy Hartono having married Hartono's sister.

If you review the films at Wimbledon during the 70s, you would probably see that the shorts did not become tight until the mid-70s; earlier on, shorts were short but not as short as those worn by Borg.

To players from the tropics spring in the UK is bitterly cold.The thing that really amazes me are the tight pants, I dont think modern players want to wear them,one could probably sustain some kind of injury. But the dressing is about the same for tennis (see Bjorn Borg) and soccer players of the 70s looked really comical in their shorts.

C'mon Mynah Bird, does either player look like his movement is encumbered? The shorts in the seventies were made of stretchy synthetics or perhaps a blend of synthetics and cotton and a player could move just fine in them.The tighter fit was considered a sexy change in style from what one would have seen a decade or so earlier.

Oh, I used to wear them (I'm Hartono's age). They were fine. Made of stretchy material. We thought they were sexy.

I think Hartono during his heydays must have been the fastest and hardest hitting player of his time.He had little use for a defence or even a backhand. only players who could attack him with hard shots like Gunalan,Pri or even Sture Johnson were able to trouble his defence.In the same era ex-indos like Tang Xian Hu or Hou Jia Chang combined their Indo racquet skills with China's hard training regime and probably would have matched Hartono's achievements if given a chance.

i doubt they earn alot back in those days. even top player now are not rich
