THE 1975 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN MAGADINO SWITZERLAND
-English voice-over by Pieter
Pffff, that was a tough one. An excellent 8mm film from Günther Schmidt but how to turn this into a compelling video that tells the story of what r/c racing was all about back in 1975?
The video itself tells a story for sure, but I felt the video could use a voice to tell the story as well. And although I was there in 1975 and made it to 2 finals (sports and formula) I had very little recollection of how this second Euro's actually unfolded. The only thing I did remember very well is how it ended for me! Well, watch the video to find out...
As I am telling this story off my head I felt it was necessary to use my own voice in the voice-over. I then found out how difficult that is, not being a voice actor, and having to do voice recordings over and over again. So, as I did with the other recent videos I used text-2-speech once more but now using my own voice! I used an AI Text-2-Speech program Speechify to clone my own voice. That's also easier said than done, as during the cloning process it's not only the tone of your voice that is cloned but also the intonation, the 2 together create your unique voice signature! It took quite some takes before the result was approved by my wife Renee Bervoets, that's the ultimate test for me!
The next challenge was writing a compelling story about rc racing in the mid Seventies and synchronizing it with the footage. He, I am not a professional video maker or voice actor, so don't expect it to be movie voice-over quality but I think the result is very good for an amateur. This video is my all-out effort to tell you the story of what r/c racing looked like in the mid 70-ties.
Enjoy the video and spread it to your current and vintage r/c racing friends!
Pieter

Interesting how some of them looked like period race car drivers (one looked like Niki Lauda 02:36 another perhaps like the Argentine Carlos Reutemann 02:53). Even their names sound like those of that era; Gunter Schmidt, Franco Sabatini.! I'd have been 5 years old then, fascinated playing with a near fully hand-me-down 1960's Scalextric set. Still have my PB9 from 79, purchased in 1980. Initially had a Veco .21 aero engine from a previous Keyjohn stock car.. Later upgraded to an OPS engine and blue, brushed aluminium anodised JR McGregor stick transmitter.. The future seemed progressive and bright 03:06. All was possible to me. Including being the next Ronnie Peterson 02:30 or Mario Andretti and Colin Chapman combined. Superb times and a superb upload. Arguably your best yet Peter. Excellent naration. Continue like this, you'll deserve an RC world knighthood. Well done.! 😂

08:46, remember folks, this was pre Mary Whitehouse and political correctness era. When grid girls were the norm and Robin Askwith was up to his typical antics. People knew how to live.!

17:08, For yourself Peter 1979 Nuremburg Euros title. For Phil Booth, 1979 Geneva Worlds, running PB9 and the similarly U.K. ubiquitous OPS engine I recall. The latter is a very distant memory for me now. We've had many successful racers since in 1/12 LMP electric and 1/10 touring categories (both electric and i.c.) Yet not in that class of 1/8 RC, despite having numerous quality drivers. Argentina 2007 Worlds was probably the last realistic missed opportunity. It's puzzling.

Great video and amazing commentary, thank you for posting this history lesson about RC racing. I got my first RC car in the late seventies, a PB International PB6 with a K&B engine and Futaba radio while I was still in high school. At that time there was no club or track in Cape Town SA and we mostly ran in parking lots in the area. Information and people with any RC car experience were very limited in our region and 90% of the time was spent trying to get the motor to run, this was followed by short runs and many crashes! Later I was part of a small group that started the Cape (Killarney) Radio Car Club which evolved into the Milnerton Radio Car Club with a purpose build track. Information on tuning and car improvements were limited and I remember waiting anxiously for a small RC car booklet that came from the UK. I learned a lot as I started to travel within SA to other tracks and raced in National events against racers like Wennie Bester, Dennis Samson and Victor Timkoe. I was able to see the hobby progress and the technology improve in leaps and bounds, from flat pan chassis to differentials, tune pipes, suspension, better tyres and finally 4WD. What an amazing time, thanks again!

Great Memories seeing this. I was a kid in West-Berlin these days and we had a RC scene racing at an improvised track at STAURAUM DREILINDEN every weekend. My fathers working colleague was one of the participants and I can remember that lovely smell very well. Later I got into the 1:12 electric thing with some success, being 6th on my very first (Berlin) Championship.
