L'Escargot made four Grand National appearances, his first in 1972 when he fell, 1973 he was placed 3rd, in 1974 2nd, culminating in his win in 1975, at aged 12 , ridden by Tommy Carberry.
Tommy Carberry who was five times Champion National Hunt jockey and twice overall Champion Irish jockey had previously ridden L'Escargot to victory twice in The Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1970/71.

L`Escargot has never been given the credit he deserves as a Dual Gold Cup Winner who is one of only two horses in history to have won the national & Gold cup in their careers. Tommy Carberry gave him a lovely ride and he was cantering over his field from the Canal Turn. In the space he also won the Gold Cup on Ten Up and Irish National on Brown Lad.

At 11:26, you can see the covered up body of Land Lark who fell at the Chair. As others have said, Beau Bob's jockey should have pulled him up before diving over the steepest part of Becher's Brook on a tired horse, or at least took him over the other side of the fence where the drop was much less severe. He would have died instantly with landing on his neck like that. It's really sad what happened to Up For Review yesterday, but it's more upsetting the way people are screaming for the race to be abolished, and even all National Hunt racing to be scrapped. You try to explain to them that this was the first fatality in the race for SEVEN years, and the strides the industry has made to make the race safer with the fences reduced to the size of upturned dandy brushes, but the bastards just won't have it.
@lesleyhart6295
@lesleyhart6295 4 года назад
The 70s and 80s nationals had a special aura about them for me.I don't want to see a horse lose it's life in a race.But the stern test of aintree then and the chance of incident and thrills and spills was what made it unique.And a stand out race that even non horse racing fans tuned into.The incident at 1st bechers in 89 started a slow and steady reduction in the races severity.A reduction in severity that has now accelerated a lot more since the synchronised and according to pete fatalities in 2012.My settee cushions are stiffer than the fences now.Red rums record looked unlikely to be ever beaten.In my opinion now it is impossible.Because no such race exists anymore of the type and calibre of test that he went 1 1 2 2 1.

Golden Miller is the only other horse to have done the Gold Cup, National double and it was asking a lot of Red Rum to give so much weight to a Gold Cup winner. Red Rum's trainer Ginger McCain wasn't happy with the ride of Brian Fletcher (probably the best rider of the "old" National fences there has ever been - 3 wins, a 2nd and 2 x 3rd's and he retired aged just 28yo due to head injuries) on Red Rum - said he should have pushed the pace a bit more! L'Escargot was a helluva horse and if you watch the previous year's National when he was 2nd you have to think that but for Red Rum he could have been a multiple winner of the race.

L'Escargot pissed it. The great Red Rum was giving only 10lbs away, yet couldn't make a race of it.
