I was 10 years old in 1977. I was suffering a miserable childhood. Red Rum was my hero & saviour. I'm now 56, and I still have to watch this race every year, on Grand National day. From the moment Peter O'Sullevan's voice breaks when Churchtown Boy stumbles at the 2nd last fence, the tears start flowing...I will watch the race later today, but it will never be the same. Thank you, Rummy, for all the memories, they will live with me forever xxx

5 Grand Nationals and only 2 horses ever finished ahead of him. One was L’escargot who had also just won the Cheltenham Gold cup, so a top top horse and the other was Rag Trade who Red Rum was narrowly beaten by. Other than them, he beat every other horse in 5 races. Astounding achievement. There will never be one like it again in the Grand National

And Red Rum was bred to win a flat race (and dead heated with his former stable companion in a flat race at Livepool). But he won the world's longest jumps race.

I am in no way a horse racing fan, but my god, for a brief period in my life, Red Rum made me one, because of his extraordinary and legendary achievements which will never be beaten. What I think is most astonishing of all about that horse was that he just made it look so easy, for what is by far, the toughest horse race in the world, and at a time when the fences were at their highest and toughest. His finish to win his third Grand National always has and always will stay with me, because it really was a miracle. What an astonishing horse, who is much missed. I remember shedding a tear when I heard of his passing, but boy he deserves his well earned rest. RIP Red Rum and thank you.

There was a question on Family Fortunes a couple of days ago .'Name a famous horse'(this could be any horse fact or fiction, not just racehorses) Red Rum was the top answer with 43 out of 100 people naming him. This question was asked 43 years after his retirement, and 26 years after he passed away. It just underlines what a fantastic legacy Red Rum left on the nation. Rummy was so loved and still is.

@@sindento1942 ... well the name of the game is jumping ... and the national had the hardest fences, at least back then ... so Red Rum was the best jumper ever ... if you want to talk fastest jumper well thats another question ... would Arkle have even got round, we will never know, would Tiger roll have jumped the fences back then, again we will never know ... what we do know is a little horse who had a poor start in life and was like a wet rag in a field when he was saved and went to Southport with bad feet ran the National at its hardest and never fell or looked like it in 5 outings coming 1st 3 times and 2nd 2 times ... winning under top weight of 12st on his 2nd start at Liverpool and never looked tired at the end did get round time and time again ... they count the winners at the end and if you don't finish you can't be counted ... @@jeanlawley6483 You have to remember the first National winner,Lottery,quite appropriate for what was to come.There's been some massive upsets over the years.Over the last few years the course and fences have been made much safer,and about time.Many owners of top class chasers wouldn't risk their horses in such a race due to how unpredictable it was.You need luck as well has natural ability but none of that counts if some horse comes down and drags you down with it and many horses that ran back then wouldn't be allowed to now,they just weren't good enough. Red Rum was the best horse ever over the National course there's no doubt about that,away from Aintree his limitations were exposed though.

A quite remarkable horse: to jump 150 fences, run some 22 and half miles, never fall, rarely falter and carry heavy weights . I witnessed all this and am so glad I did. I truly believe we will never see his like again. Good horses will come and go, occasionally great horses will come and go but there will never ever be one of the calibre of Red Rum. His story is all the more poignant if you consider his quite dreadful history of inept trainers, bad jockeys and pedal bone ossification. Rummy - simply the best .

You said it. To have 3 wins and two seconds in a race where only about 1/3 of the horses finish is incredible. To have raced a hundred times and managed to stay on his feet in all of them is mind boggling. WHAT A HORSE! Feel bad for the horse that fell at fence 6 and looked like it had a spinal injury. They must have had to hustle to get him off the course before the second lap. Red Rum’s trainer disapproved of the changes they made since Tummy’s time to make the course safer . Decreasing the drop after the fence at Becher’s and making some fences smaller. The trainer predicted it would make riders more reckless and the statistics seem to support his position. Kind of like frangible pins in eventing. Designers make trappier combinations because they figure it’ll give way if someone misses (the one study done showed they frequently don’t) and riders think the same thing. Pesky unintended consequences.

I don't care the era or opposition, it is what it was at the time, what a performance off top weight. They might be classier in the national today but none with a bigger heart than this horse. The 3 wins and 2 seconds will hardly be matched.

In our house that day, I'd backed Red Rum. My older brother picked Churchtown Boy. My mum had Eyecatcher, and my dad done The Pilgarlic. Even my younger sister picked out Happy Ranger which finished 7th. My dad had put the bets on that morning and staked around £5 with mostly 50p each-way bets. As I had the winner, I pocketed over six quid and all the others got their each-way up. I remember the huge chippy tea we all had that night, covered by a bit of our winnings.

I was 14 at the time and my father offered to place £1 on a horse of my choosing. I chose Red Rum and dad refused to place the bet saying Rummy was too old and carrying too much weight to win. I went without a bet, and gave my dad a bit of a hard time later that day! In fairness, he coughed up the winnings out of his own pocket! (And remember, a quid bought you a lot more back then than it does today).

I worked with a man who was a big racing fan, he only used to really bet on flat races (He said that there were enough things to think about without fences if your money was on a horse.) But he went to Aintree every year. He told me two things about that race and Red Rum. He said that year was the only time he saw the track bookies take a real hammering. Everyone was betting heavy on what they fancied to win but also putting a side bet on Red Rum, so if they had £50 on Curchtown Boy they put £20 on Red rum if £500 on another horse £100 on Red Rum. He said that virtually no one there that day had no money on Red Rum to win, just because they wanted him to. The other thing that he said was. "If the National was run over 6 miles over those fences, that horse would have won all 5." Some horse. A British sporting hero.
@paulking4594
@paulking4594 3 года назад
The size of the fences then to the last few runnings. The difference is undeniable. This horse is a legend and regardless if any other horse wins the National 3 times, it will never equal Red Rums weight carrying and jumping ability.
