Randy its not the timing that needs setting. Its the carburettor that needs the idle and air screw setting! Also check the vacuum lines as its blanked off on the dizzy.

Put some foil insulation between the floors and carpet, it’ll be more comfortable as the exhaust heat penetrates into the interior.

Watching oldies like these come to life really makes me want to start an old bike restoration project... but then I remember how frustrating it can feel at times and how much times it can steal from you.

A trick i was shown the popping from the exhaust adjust the timing until it stops making the noise without the strobe light then adjust the carb mixture then the idle but must be at operating temperature to get it correct

Hi Randy, You really want the grab handles on keeping it original, and being able to close the door with ease when the top is on and the window is up. Note also the pre -made perforations for where the door speaker is intended to be.

I know the door cards look great without the arm rest, but it is needed. Most people will find themselves closing the door by pulling on the wing window. The stress from this causes the crack of doom in the outer door skin near the wing window and the mirror. At least if you have the option to use the arm rest to pull the door closed it may prevent the crack in the first place. Car is looking great, keep up the good work. Take a look at The Little British Car Company for discounts on parts over the Moss price, I have used them for years.

Each time you work on the MGB, it gets better and better. I love what you did with the interior.

I’d still love to see Weird Beard do a paint correction/restoration on the MGB.

Those panels come with perferations for speakers. You should put on the door handle/arm rests back on the doors. Save all of the old parts for the next owner (unless they're destroyed).

Hi from the UK, The Strobe figures should always be done with vacuum advance disconnected & the small hose plugged to avoid over lean when adjusting. Plus timing figures depend on wear & milage on engine.

Randy i think you need to refit those door handles for originality and being able to close the door with the window up love watching its MG.

You can use some 3m spray glue for that back carpet piece to keep it from moving around

Make sure you take the vacuum advance off when you time it plug the vacuum line time set it to factory spec then plug in the vacuum advance some of the vacuum advance are tunable you can stick an allen wrench down the diaphragm you should check this as lots of people have been having problems when you go to accelerate the vacuum advance is set too high when the diaphragm is plugged back into vacuum look up tuning vacuum diaphragm

Great job. Those side draught carburetors are tricky things. The biggest thing is the fluid in the throttle damper. They need PRECISELY 4.5CC of Type F transmission fluid. I used a syringe to suck the old fluid out and the put the correct amount back in. Our 81 Volvo had a Zenith. I believe yours is a Stromberg. Same idea. Then it needs tuning with the choke all the way off and the engine nice and warm. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, which needs sorting first. Then with the vacuum gauge, set the air screw, then the fuel screw, and finally the mixture screw. Just be glad you only have one of them!

The fact that I heard a clip ping off when you removed the speaker wire tells me that it was factory or dealer installed. The new door cards appear to be from a Moss interior kit. Nice job.

This car (and apologize for repeating myself) is made for that environment! Those are the kind of roads where it should be right at home. It's pretty perfect for a fun weekend car out in the country.

Well Randy you are doing the old girl proud. Good to see people get a bit of passion for the classics. Its difficult o judge whats wrong with the engine but when you first managed to get it started it ran well so it has to be timing and carb adjustment. The 'hanging on' with the revs used to be a characteristic of the emission carbs. Just get the mixture and throttle right which is pretty easy on those Strombergs. At least you don't have to balance twin SUs.... Your distributor advances 20-21 degrees at the crank, so if you set timing at 12-14 degrees at @ 1,200 RPM, it will be around the recommended 34 degrees total advance @ 3,500.

You are supposed to glue the carpet to the floor at the rear using a spray adhesive. The whole floor area should have a soundproofing felt underlay. Also glue the carpet in the footwell arches.

Buy a section or two of dryer exhaust hose from Lowes/HomeDepot for cheap exhaust. Cut hole in door or wall or just run under semi-closed door.

RANDY- you want to try and get hold of a Haynes workshop manual for the mgb, will help you loads its based on a full strip down and rebuild, torque settings timing settings etc etc etc Get some new seat belts they look like they rotten on the camera!!

I got a 1954 Plymouth savory I have done a lot of work to it I couldn’t wait to drive it any longer so I took it out today and did great the tires are so dry rot it I don’t know how they hold air but it did good all the way there and back

Randy check the chain or belt sure what it has but I’m thinking chain to make sure it hasn’t stretched or jumped timing

I'd say check for a possible vacuum leak or something is up with the chain if it doesn't like running at full throttle or at idle

I think you can get a cheap gas analyzer which goes in the tailpipe and helps set the carb mixtures correctly. I would also consider putting the armrests on the doors, a person ends up in the rain, and shutting the door would be easier with the armrest in...

Randy! Make sure the harmonic balancer hasn't slipped out of inner and outer rings orientation, because when that happens, you get erroneous timing readings. And if I was working on it, doing all you've done, I would first question myself with: "OK, what did I do to knock out the speedometer?" But that could be coincidental to your working on the car - I don't recall you working around the transmission where the cable could be disturbed, and I didn't see you pull the gauge cluster, although you might've been close to the cable when doing the brakes... Didn't you put a new master cylinder on it?

Tossing the Zenith Stromberg into the parts pile was the best thing I ever did for my MGB! Very frustrating carburetor.

Just a little FYI. The engine run-on after turning off the ignition has nothing to do with timing. You have a carbon buildup in the cylinders that is glowing red hot and after turning off the switch the hot carbon is ignighting the fuel mixture in the cylinders. This is WHY timing adjustments are ineffective. Run the RPMs up to about 2500-3000 and pour a bottle of seafoam through the carburetor slowly to clean out the carbon buildup.

I think it's a combination of an air leak and timing. All MGB's I've worked on have had the twin SU's which are very easy to maintain!

Check the harmonic balancer if it has a rubber ring the outer part might have moved GOOD VIDEO

Ok, is there some ninja secret to getting the snaps to all line up and snap in place on the doors? I get one or two in and in trying to get the others to snap in the first 2 fall out. Then in trying to get them in, they punch through the vinyl !!!

Old hot rodders floor pan trick. Patch with license plates using sheetmetal screws or rivets, sealed with seamseal. Paint reverse side with POR, then seal with ruberized undercoating.
