With those graphics, I can understand your disinterest in games. Other than that, the TV was in surprisingly great shape for its age aparts from those Matsushitas with incontinence.

Never mind the graphics... but the gameplay loop. Oof!

Retro gamers are not buying these CRT Tellys for very limited graphic Atari bit more impressive Nintendo, Sega and PlayStation games with better graphics and more colour palette. Sango should know that and is no different in playing real games like chess or football but using tech and computer engineering and software which idk why he dose not understand that. These Atari games are not desirable enough for spending lots of money for a new old stock Trinitron
Год назад
Although visual quality is important, I believe that games with good storytelling, satisfying gameplay loop, and good enough graphics are best. Such as Celeste, ftl: faster than light, stardew valley, and fallout new vegas to name a few. With modding support games can exceed it's base game playability and content. Such as skyrim and rimworld.

I had one of these little personal Trinitron sets from 1988 on, was a gift from my grandparents. I still remember how beautiful and vivid the colors were on that set. It worked perfectly until 2006 or so when the power button finally wore out and it would repeatedly flip on and off. It was great for NES and Genesis games back in the day.

You are a much better video game player than me, seriously. Despite the crushing reality of it, that Sony is in amazing condition accept for the horrible solder joints, flux all over the boards and dead capacitors. It deserves a total restoration. Whoever owns it should spend the money or learn how to do it by themself. My two cents that this is a priceless beauty in need.

I was and still am, a big fan of Sony TVs. That’s the only kind I installed in my house years back, when TV was worth watching. The old CRT Sonys all work as perfectly as the day I bought them. I don’t use them much now but they are all way to nice to just scrap.

It only has few hours of use, and weighs just about as much as the engine in my diesel pickup. That Sony will be staying where it is. I still can’t believe what I spent on it. I swapped the two side hung speakers with a small pair of Infinity speakers when I got it.

I love playing video games, but understand it's not for everyone. Same as fixing old tv and radios is not for everyone. I love the Atari. The original console the best to play. The flashback consoles are ok, but have issues. The controller needs line of sight to work as it's working with IR sensors, so no line of sight, the controller doesn't work. You can plug in an original controller which i recommend. Also, push forward on the controller when playing Asteroids and the ship will move around the screen. Pull back to warp to other parts of the screen, which comes in handy when almost getting hit by an asteroid. Enjoyed the video, even if you bagged on my hobby and favourite console.

Gotta say I was a little bit surprised by your attitude towards video games... I do see your point, though. Modern popular games are not very inspiring and run on pre-existing formulas. You run, you shoot, you win the game et cetera. However the way I see it, video games as a whole should be considered nothing less than an art form. If we move back in time just a few decades ago video games were not made exclusively to make profit but companies and game designers had a passionate drive in pioneering the landscape for digital creation. Some of my life's favourite musical scores happen to come from video games. From classic simple sinewaves to modern orchestral arrangements. Sure, one might argue that art itself is kinda pointless but yet it can be fun and inspiring nonetheless. I recommend you try some of the 16 bit Nintendo games! Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox are especially impressive games for their time; iconic soundtracks and intuitive gameplay. (Short version: Gramps, valves are cool but have you seen an IC?) Lol

I love your commentary. These "throwback" consoles are usually garbage. I found one of the family's original 2600's stuffed way into the back of the garage of the old house many years ago with severe rain damage to it and all of the games. It cleaned up pretty good and while the gameplay isn't great, because it's a 2600, it's much better than trying to use a controller with an IR remote. These old games are usually really fast paced and require a controller and TV with 0 lag time. That's why these old TV's are so sought after for these old games. Modern digital TV's have to buffer the analog signal and thus creates some lag. The difference is measurable on a human scale as evident by my high score on the game KABOOM.

Oh, one more thing about the 2600: it had no RAM to speak of, and no video generator like you’d find on any computers of the era… the code in the cartridge ROM was generating the video signal basically all in software, what’s referred to as “racing the beam”. Amazing that it worked at all, considering the processor involved…

I can relate to the dislike for playing video games. I first started trying to play video games when I got my commodore 64 in the early 80s. I tried playing some games, and had this negative nagging feeling that I was engaged in a terrible waste of time. I got into writing programs on the machine, and working on learning the tech of the hardware and that made me feel more productive. I went on to doing software engineering as a career in the field of electrical and mechanical systems automation, and loved every minute of it. I don't judge the gamers although I do feel there's a limit to how much time should be spent and I agree that it's better to live a more real life through your own experiences than vicariously through video games, but to each his or her own. I suppose becoming excellent at video games can prepare a person for certain careers like being a drone operator for the military.

This was our first color TV, but we had the 14" version. My parents had money, but color TV, even in the mid 1970s, was an extravagance. The Sony Trinitron was the first semi-portable color TV with near-studio-quality color. When I was a little kid, I used to have dreams every night that we had color television. Kids think they have it hard now. This TV was well over $500 in 1975. I made a dollar mowing the lawn at the time.

This sure brings back memories! I had an Atari 2600 back in the early-1980's. Using one's TV as a video game center was a novel concept in those days. The CRT appears to have purity issues in the lower-left corner. I'd *much rather* play Atari video games than deal with "crepe erase."

Well done for getting it working properly! I gather that these old Pincushion Correction circuits which corrected just on the East-West Axis worked by using an Integrator fed from the Vertical Timebase to produce what was called a Parabolic Waveform which was then fed to the Horizontal Output Stage to modulate the width of the Raster and so correct the geometry (when suitably tweaked).

Nowadays these kids have all the virtual realism, but it misses so much of what I had back then. It felt on a par to designing/fixing the circuits because we were understanding and working so closely WITH them. Think Andrew Braybrook/Uridium. I can SMELL the excitement of the Commodore 64 even today.

The 2600 was very primitive even during it's time and was quickly outclassed by competition that came on the market shortly thereafter such as the Intellivision and especially the ColecoVision. Don't let that experience sour you on the ideal of gaming, the 2600 is the video game equivalent to cave paintings etched on stone walls with blood and feces.

It's a beautiful set, but I wouldn't say it's a vintage gamer's dream. I am a vintage gamer, and the first thing I notice is a lack of composite input. So this might be okay for Atari or something, but not NES on up. Not unless you want to go in through the tuner on channel 3, which provides a not so great picture. It lasted another 10 years of heavy use before the color became impossibly green-tinged and there were big dark and light bars vertical bars on the screen. It was replaced with a new larger 27" Trinitron that itself lasted another 15+ years in daily service.

I only have to say that most people in their right mind wont splurge 600$ or whatever on a vintage trinitron / professional grade crt just to play atari. In my oppinion its most commonly people with original arcade game hardware or rgb modded game consoles from the 90's / vintage computer folks which actually benefit from sharper displays with better text clarity etc.

Agreed, the appeal of the 2600 was always the arcade-style playability of the games not the eye-popping graphics. So it can be played on anything with a screen - I use an ancient Panasonic plasma mounted on the wall in my basement. You're right that the 16-bit consoles (SNES, Mega Drive / Genesis etc) do respond better to a CRT than a modern LED TV, but even these are quite OK with plasma in my experience.

the manuals often made up for the lacking graphics. I do remember being a bit disturbed by breaking blocks in Mario Bros. because the manual says Bowser turned the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom into blocks. So if you break them, you're basically murdering people. Great job, Nintendo!

I live in Thailand and brand new CRT televisions are still available here. They're a minority but they're still made. You'd need a transformer since everything is 220-240 vac here. Alternative to the gamers choice.

You say you don't play but you blame your controller like a pro.

I agree with your idea of turning off the “boob tube” and go outside on special ops missions!

"something worth watching on TV" - quite the oxymoron.

As a player of videogames and a Sony Trinitron fanboy this is definitely "gamer's choice" for me! Haha

A lot of the Japanese makers had spare screw holes. VCRs from the 80s were loaded with them inside and out.

As a subscriber to your channel for the wealth of information you have, I would like to know why our Sony trinitron, bought used in 1999 suddenly lost only the green color disappeared otherwise the picture looks great in red and blue! I don't know the model year!

Wonder if there was a source of infra red interfering with the controller like the auto focus on the camera?

Those were so expensive back then. My dad wound up getting a Goldstar which might have been made by Sony. That TV lasted 30 years winding up in my friends garage!

Goldstar was Korean and became LG later. LG actually stands for Lucky Goldstar.

Cira 11:00: My sentiments exactly sir, it’s always amazed me why anyone plays those games. Like you suggested, learn something that will earn you some money or something that will be of significant benefit to you in real life. (or Just be out earning money instead) The programing team that wrote most of those games will beat anyone, hands down, every single time. How can anyone get so excited? And even addicted, to those “games”. Beats me mate. PS Keep up your brilliant RU-vid offerings, I love to watch, although I’m in the UK, the radios and TV’s were somewhat different, e.g. valves types different and nearly all of them used series string for the heaters, most had the chassis connected to one side of the mains (240V). Colour reception (PAL) was only available on UHF (channel 21/65) at 625 lines, and we used T.V. channels 1 thru 5 and 6 thru 13 on VHF for B&W (405 lines). Sorry I digress, but the main reason I love to watch your channel is because it takes me back in time, to a time I would much rather be now. Who, in the World, would have even remotely considered then, what would become of TV’s, radios and computers as they are today?
