William Shatner was homeless living out of his truck....he kept going forward...much respect.

Shatner is 44 in this clip, he just turned 90 this yr and still look sharp as a tack. Amazing.

I feel so proud , I met William Shatner back in 1981, in N.Y.C. 11 west 25th street in the elevator on the 3rd floor , when we reached the ground floor , he asked me for directions to Sixth Avenue in which I directed him , he was with two ladies at the time that were waiting for him outside next to the building , When he thanked me , I told him God bless you and he turned to me and said with his Captain Kirk voice and said "No God bless you" , never ever forgot and will never ever forget that special moment that I shared with this special human being 🌟

He has something nearly noone else has, an extreme intensity while calm at the same time. His aura.

And again William Shatner makes history, when he really did go to space. Great legend.

I Still love The Original Classic Star Trek

Laugh all you want, but lots of people dedicated to science and engineering were inspired by that series. Me, an engineering student, among them.

I was EIGHT years old when this aired, shit. Star Trek was on every Saturday afternoon in Australia, forEVER! It seemed like there were 10 seasons. It really shaped me to love learning, math and science and I was a straight A student, but also grounded, played sports, had lots of friends. It had a phenomenal affect considering all the rest of the crap on tv. Star Trek was very special to me in the 70s.

I never realized how much William Shatner looks like Lee Major. They both also played many heroes of our youth.

He’s almost 90, has like 3 tv shows, does tons of interviews, and rides his horses on his ranch. Say what you, but William Shatner obviously did something very, very right in his life. Almost 90 and looks 65-70 with the energy of someone even younger. I think of him and Mr Nimoy (RIP) as excellent inspirations.

Lmao, Shatner thought 5 years was a long time for the show to be defunct, how about 50 years later after the last show and still going strong Cap'n Kirk?

This was a low period for Bill, according to his books. When he was talking about being so busy he was just trying to promote himself as "sought after" for the next assignment. And he never loved Trek like the fans and had an ambivalent attitude toward it I am sure because here he is typecast and in an interview that's all about the cancelled show and not interested in him as a person or his other (more recent) work. I really think he spend the 70s and much of the 80s trying to not offend fans while also distancing himself from Trek for the sake of his career. A tough spot to be in, and it helps me understand why his words about the show were so careful and kind of unauthentic. His residuals had long run out, and he was fighting being typecast. And I do not blame him one bit. Later in his career I think he had made a bit more of a mark in other ways and Trek movies had come back to provide some income and I think he made peace with it. (And he seemed to see it as an opportunity to leverage in the form of books, appearances, etc.) but this video was during a low time for him and I am glad he came though it in the end. It must have taken a lot of character to endure all this notoriety that was also killing his career, and the generally goofy and disproportionately passionate persona Trekkies projected as a public image. But he did endure it, though at times it must have been almost soul-crushing.

He certainly has a remarkable way of charm that is very inviting to people. Wonderful interview. Very enjoyable and engaging .

I still enjoy the reruns in England, l was 7 when l first saw it in 1971. Was in love with him, then David Cassidy the next year.

There is a little Elvis look about his face and the show was amazing for the time and back then, everyone pulled their weight and cared. The writers, the producer, RODDENBERRY, just so many reasons why it was a "phenomenon".

I was there! I remember the gal leaping across the table to try and kiss Shatner. I think it was my 3rd Convention. The Commodore Hotel was my first in 73. Yeah... I was a geek... but I miss those days.

When all is said done, hearing that opening and watching an episode is what will always fill me with happiness contentment.

Bill busted out the good hairpiece for this interview. Who knew he'd still be with us all these years later? Shatner has the same place in the Star Trek universe that Connery does in the James Bond universe: the first and the best, always.

This seems so innocent. There had never been anything like the fans rescuing a cancelled show. Today, dressing up like Enterprise crew or characters is cliched and dated. Then, it was fresh, and spontaneous. So fun to see this!

Sometimes it really upsets me to see someone in their prime and then see them when they're old. Life isn't fair, I wish we could all live forever 💔

Okay...1975 was the year I was born. William Shatner, in this video, is 44 years old. As of April 2019, I myself turned 44 years old. I've watched William Shatner and Star Trek my whole life. To see him my age is blowing my mind.

I remember this interview. It was a late night show during a school night but my parents let me stay up to watch it. That was a time before VCR's and DVR so if you didn't catch it then you had to wait until the rerun if you were lucky.

He always looked better with light, straight haired toupees VS that bushy toupee style he used later. This toupee was better than any he used in the early 70s, all through the 80s and 90s.

If William Shatner wound up being a bit mystified by the attention he got from that little 3 year long show, I would say that is what you get for being so damn good!

I love how colorful the audience members are. The first time I saw Star Trek was in Thailand in 1979 in a hotel, which was a transition point after we left the refugee camp and was heading to the U.S. My family and I were war refugee after the Vietnam War had ended.

Star Trek was so far an Head of it’s time, it is without doubt one of the best TV shows ever! Whilst I agree it lost its way a bit in the third season the first two were just awesome! I’m not a Shatner fan per se but Kirk was a great character! It was the relationship between the main characters that made it! It is still shown every day on sky over and over so folk must still be watching

I was 12 when this aired and I remember watching it. I was one of the kids watching in the afternoons after school that made Star Trek such a huge hit in syndication. It would routinely beat every other show airing opposite Star Trek and that includes the evening news programs which HAD been the ratings kings in every market. It wasn’t just “popular” it was a phenomenon unparalleled in television history.

This is great I never seen this! I been watching Star Trek since I was a kid in the 70s. On another note, Geraldo been around for a long time.

I grew up watching star trek early 70's

Little did they realize what was to come later. many movies and more TV shows.

Just two years prior to this interview, the animated Star Trek concluded and two more after this, Star Trek the Motion Picture began production. (more or less.) For more than 50 years Star Trek has been part of the cultural landscape. I came to the party late, but I'm glad I made it!

i was three years old when this interview took place, i remember watching reruns in the late 70s and through out the 80s, and the movies at the theater very awesome,

three years later Star Trek was back, and in a big big way, Star Trek The Motion Picture started shooting in 1978, who would have thought!

This is the time before William Shatner was resisting and not wanting to be reminded of his role in Star Trek. He didn’t want to be remembered as Captain Kirk for the rest of his life and he wanted the world to think of him as I’m more well rounded actor. But after several years, he realized he can’t beat what the people wanted, which was Star Trek and Captain Kirk so he did a 180 and embraced Star Trek and Captain Kirk till this day! 🎉

He is 44 here, so handsome. Now he is 90 in 2021.

I always like to watch The legendary, the amazing, the fantastic, the heroic, the historic, the courageous, the man who cheated death JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK.

I remember watching the bloopers at all the conventions of the day not knowing who was behind them, Billy Blackburn a cast member that was on as many episodes as all the main people and yet filmed behind the scenes footage that was so endearing.

Shatner was fantastic. Loved him in those Hollywood sport games they used to have back then. And star trek of course.

If they had a crystal ball ! Star Trek turned into a cultural phenomenon. The red headed kid in the audience was Mason Reese ;” Between the years of 1969 to 1984, Mason was everywhere you looked. Being a veteran of over 75 commercials, seven of which won Clio awards, including the coveted best male actor Clio. Mason was a guest on countless variety and talk shows, his charm and sense of humor made him a fan favorite on the Mike Douglas Show of which Mason appeared over 25 times and Co hosted three separate weeks. Mike dedicated many pages to Mason in his autobiography, and claimed that Mason received the highest ratings in the history of the show. Mason also graced the covers of every major magazine including the ever popular T.V. Guide. When Mason was 7, he was hired by WNBC, in New York, to be a contributing field reporter and present family oriented pieces for the newscast.”

I watched every original Star Trek episode at least 5 times. I was hooked on it the second it came out and nothing in this universe could pry me, at 6:00 PM, PST from watching. (ok slight exaggeration there). My point here is, even after that much exposure to that innovative and revolutionary show I STILL get goosebumps almost every time listening to the intro music paired with Shatner's voice.

In those days Star Trek was one of my favorite series and is still is...William Shatner was my favorite character along with Spock. All the characters on Star Trek were wonderful.

Geraldo seems here like a real fan. I really William Shatner. He's his own man, and is always moving forward, even now ( 2024 ) in his 90's.

In those early days in the aftermath of the series, there wasn't much discussion for a movie. It wasn't until Star Wars came out in 1977, that the buzz started. Star Wars brought back a 1930s serial type spectacle to sci-fi refined into a much different form. The "hard sci-fi" period of the late 1960s and early 1970s as cerebral and welcoming as it was, began to wear out. Star Trek was thus a perfect show to ride on the heels of the Star Wars phenomenon with other space films of the time because it had both spectacle and cerebral elements ingrained.

Shatner's Kirk was due to his experience doing Shakespeare in Canada. A small town Stratford Ontario. So he played him like he was onstage doing live theatre.

When Star Trek started I was pretty young teen but when I saw Captain Kirk I still remembered him as the crazy man on the airplane flight with a Gargoyle (?) tearing the engine apart in mid flight in a Twilight Zone episode I saw as a very young child....

All actors have down periods, he was a trooper, kept smiling throughout, it paid off. Imagine if he had not wanted anything to do with it...it might have ended his career way early....ala Wil Wheaton hahaha...

How is it that ratings were low yet one million letters protesting it’s cancellation were written???? Not to mention the Trekkie phenomenon?

Only a few years before he would show up in the very first Star Trek movie and be in advertisements for the Commodore VIC-20 computer, proudly wearing one of the most flammable suits ever.

And he's now 90 YO and still trucking like never before!!!
