This series of promo film commercials for Dodge, part of the Chrysler Corporation, date to the 1970’s. In this era, consumers began to favor pony cars over muscle cars, especially after 1973 when the oil crisis hit and gas prices jumped from 3 to 12 dollars in a year.
The 1975 Dodge Coronet opens the film as a white model rolls down the highway (:26). Hard top, sedan and wagon versions were available (:35). A baby blue four door model is looked to (:44). The hard top Coronet model came with either a canopy (1:15) or halo roof (1:23). The camera turns inward for internal features (1:47). A model lifts up the hood to inspect the standard features for the economy (3:10). Economical engines and axels are pointed to (3:37). A light is highlighted on the hood as a driver slams on the gas pedal (3:45) designed to warn the driver so they don’t waste gas. Tires were pointed to as a way of keeping gas costs low (3:58). Dodge looked to appease the needs of the small car buyer with the Dodge Dart (6:21). Exterior features are highlighted (6:30). A family loads into the spacious interior (6:49). The Dart, as many of their other makes and models of the year, was created with noise deadening materials (8:05). Dodge offered two gas saving engines (8:48). The standard axel from the previous year is compared to the economy axel (9:32). A fuel pacer system was offered as an available feature (10:03). Skis are loaded into the trunk of the Dodge Dart 360 Sport (10:35). A Dodge Charger Special Edition (12:19) marketed as a personal luxury car (12:47). Upholstery of the interior follows (12:58). The advertisement boasts one of the available features is a radio equipped with five different radio and tape units (14:03). Standard features are pointed out (14:52). The electronic ignition and battery life are noted to aide consumers in keeping fuel costs down (15:55). A family taking photographs during a trip opens the Dodge Plymouth Grand Fury segment designed to be family car (18:29). The full sized car sits ready to tow a trailer (18:38). The roomy interior is noted (18:56). The heavy trailer package (19:50) an interior optional features are depicted (20:08). A new low slip torque converter was added to help save fuel (20:34). The electronic lean burn engine follows (22:00). The four door (22:20) is compared to the two door (22:25). The camera spins around the full sized Dodge Monaco (23:43). The standard interior on a Royal Monaco is shown (24:31) including a deep shag carpet. Standard engine features are highlighted (27:09). An orange 1978 Plymouth Trail Duster parks on a snowy hill (28:51). The Trail Duster Sport’s interior follow (29:07). The vehicle was marketed towards those with active lifestyles. Trailering Towing Packages are compared (30:42). The vehicle take off down the hill in full time four wheel drive (30:53). A factory installed CB radio was available (31:20). The five different engine types available follow (31:57). The Plymouth Arrow was marketed as fuel and cost effective (34:55). The hatchback style is noted (35:03). The Arrow GS and GT (35:37) follow. The new 2,000 CC silent shaft engine (37:43) is displayed. A full water cup test is conducted on the engine (38:23). The 1975 full-sized Plymouth Gran Fury is seen (40:28). Standard interior features and available options (41:18) follow. The Gran Fury rides next to a horse and carriage through town (44:39). A vibrant red Plymouth Arrow GT (46:06) wheels to a stop. The Toyota Corolla Liftback SR5 (46:17) is compared to the Arrow. The MCA-Jet engine is uncovered under the hood (46:26). The interior features and available options of this model follow (48:06). The Toyota instrument panel is compared to that of the Dodge (48:27). Arrow GT’s interior (48:36) is compared to Toyota’s interior (48:45). The Arrow GT came with dual racing mirrors to appeal to consumer’s flashy side (48:55). The styled road wheels are noted (49:05). The model is compared to Ford’s new Fiesta Sport (49:19). Standard conveniences are highlighted (49:25) including the silent shaft jet engine (49:31). The vehicle came equipped with fuel saving overdrive (49:41). Center consoles and control panels compared (50:00). The Arrow GT had all around tinted glass (50:44). The Datsun B-210 GX is now compared to the Arrow GT (51:12). Maneuverability between the two (52:16). The 1978 Dodge Sapporo closes out the film (53:16).

My father had a 69 Dodge Dart that the slant 6 engine it didn't have a lot of power but it was a work horse and it was extremely reliable 6 kid's learned how to drive in it. My father kept his clean inside and out it was painted gold with a black vinyl top. That Dart ran from 1969 until 1987 that's when he gave the to my brother and his wife who promptly wore it for

Yes, my dad bought a used Swinger in '79 and the chassis was garbage by '81, but the slant 6 kept on going. Whomever stole it from us in August '81 got a good engine at least.

My dad bought a 78 Aspen new with the slant 6. It would break the tires loose shifting from 1st to 2nd. I was really too young when he owned to remember much but I do remember him working on it almost every weekend.

This wasn't advertising to the wider public, they showed you these *after* you already came into the showroom. Ads that ran on TV were the usual 30 seconds and focused on one or two features, or a specific deal being offered just like today.

This is so awesome to see the 1975 models \m/ My Dad owns a super rare 1975 Dodge Dart Hang 10 with a crank sun roof & fold down rear seat for your 🏄 lol. My Dad’s “Hang 10” has a 318c.i. with a few modifications he did himself such as an aluminum semi high rise pick up for a 4 barrel carburetor set up + hooker headers,it now has a set of shaved down heads with roller rockers & titanium valves,Accel Ignition,3:73 rear gears etc. They only made the “Hang 10” from 1974-75 & the sun roof was optional & they came with a slant 6 ~ 318 or 360c.i. They are an extremely rare car that keeps gaining popularity.

I remember the Hang 10 commercials in printed magazines at that time... The phrase "Hang 10" referenced a slang surfing term and was pictured on the beach, surfboards all around, with tanned Adonis' and bikini clad beauties playing volleyball or around a campfire weenie roast... or at a ski resort chalet... the good life.

This video is great and appealing to manufacturers of competition are those of industry of shaping metal and assembly. But it also sells the car to the potential buyer and even a photographer or editor. This car has some great style today that I didn't see 30 years ago. Maybe it's the styles of products today that make me like and appreciate the odd look of the seventies now. Maybe it's because I'm born in the seventies and I'm weird and it reflects on a representation of who I am and where I come from. That Kermit the frog front face appeals to me. The way the back roof is sitting forward and yet sloping back with the black over the head it really looks like a kind of chariot or a coach. They really should top that 1st half of the roof off just make it a targa. Is that car on some nice twenties. Throw in a nice 6.4 hemi. And that baby will roll really nice.

Man in 1983 I bought a 73 Dodge Dart swinger! Mine was the 318ci. Boy if I knew then what I know now I would have kept it! It was almost mint condition! The color was tan with black vinyl top.

That was a big selling point. You have to think that up to WWII, all vehicles had wooden components. They needed to be nourished and maintained, or they rotted. If you had a car longer than five years, you needed to sand and refinish the wood. After plastic and nylon became optional, people could have their "wood" and never need to maintain or refinish it, because it was artificial. Same reason EVs come with fake exhaust sounds today; people were used to it and still wanted it in their cars.

Thanks for the memories. I think I will take a fleet of 1975 Darts and Valiants. I suppose it goes without saying they would all have Slant 6 engines. Since I am buying in bulk, you may as well throw in a few Coronet wagons with 318s. Make sure to add as many Taxi components as possible to the wagons. 😁

@@The610wise My father had a 1980 Dodge truck with the slant six in it. That thing only got to about 80K miles before the top half of the engine had to be rebuilt because it started burning a quart of oil every 100 or so miles. I had two Dodge pickups from that general time period with a V8 in them and never had that problem. I did rebuild my 85 Dodge W-250's 318 engine at about 137K miles because it was starting to get noisy and used some oil but even at that point it never used a quart more than every 300-400 miles and I think half of that was leaks and not burning. After the rebuild the engine was still running great at 270K miles, the transmission finally went to hell in it and I dumped it rather than spending $1000 on a truck that was rusted out. Technically the slant six might have been "reliable" in the manner that it didn't completely break down but no engine should need a partial rebuild at 80K miles!

My uncle had one of the very last '76 Gran Furys ever built. I loved that car but it was Minnesota and it was eaten alive with rust after just 3 years. I remember the day he brought it home in August of '76. My cousin used to drive it and when his dad was not around, he'd do a little rubber-burning. The speedometer only went to 80, which was very, very, VERY rare! I wanted to shoot John Landis after I saw The Blues Brothers! All those beautiful Mopars he destroyed!

The round headlight was about $2 back in the mid 70s, other bulbs were around 49¢, only took 2 minutes to change, no one ever had to take a bumper cap off just to change a headlight bulb like you have to with most GM cars and Ford Fusion.

I had the two-door Plymouth Fury, with the 318 CID engine. All basic, manual functions only, though. But I loved that car. And miss it. #PeriscopeFilm, do you have a related video for the 1975 Plymouth Fury? Oh, the Dodge Charger! My father had the Chrysler Cordoba (with Corinthian Leather - thanks, Ricardo Montalban!) that included the AM/FM/Cassette/CB combination radio. Made for an entertaining ride down Interstate 95 from Philadelphia, PA to Daytona, FL in the late 1970s/early 1980s!

Neil fun Memories thank You . My Co worker had a Cordoba with the Unique seat Material , and the Saskatchewan Seal Skin Seat Belts . His was the yellowish Gold Color and he Bought it used and they abused it in the Parking lot . His Partner would light it up with Paint Balls when no Customers were at the Store . The laughter from the Both of them was unreal . I drove out to the Shop one Day and asked Slim " what happened to your Car " ? They both armed up and blasted the one side with Paint balls right in front of me . Wildest thing you ever want to see , Ha ha . You made my Day Neil .

My first car was a 1969 Fury III Hardtop. I loved it but by the time I got it, it was so old and worn out that it really was an unreliable POS and it sucked gas. But God-D*MN that was a beautiful car!! 318 Slush-O-Matic Pork-Flite, 11 MPG. I wish I still had it! Its serial number was PM23F9R219596, if any of you out there still have it!!

My father was a Oldsmobile man and in the 70s GM was making junk my father bought a Olds Delta 88 and it was a huge car my mom was a tiny lady and she that Olds and she needed a pillow to see over the dashboard. The Olds didn't last 5 years but that old Dodge Dart was still there ready to go when the body started to rust around the wheel wells he did the body work himself and took it Earl Shines for the 99.99 paint job had the seats redone in a soft fabric and nothing they bought was as cool and reliable as that 69 Dodge Dart

Nooooo Ford's were notorious for being just as crappy back then as they are now, as matter of fact I just sold a 07 Focus to the junkyard for 460.00 because they are junk, every time I replaced something that needed to be replaced 2 days later something else would brake, I realize it was old but it was a nickel and dime car. I just bought a 2000 Honda Civic LX sedan from the old lady across the street for 1000.00 and it hurts 114,757 miles it's clean and we'll maintained and it runs great drives great feels great, it passed inspection, and in a way it reminds you and Dads Dodge Dart A simple reliable car that doesn't eat a hole in my bank account You can keep the Ford ,

My uncle had a 1975 Olds Delta 88 coupe. He drove it over 20 years and well over 250K miles without needing an engine or transmission rebuild/replacement. It was finally in a moderate wreck (what insurers call a "rolling total") and my cousin entered it in a demolition derby. My uncle said the car went out in a "blaze of thunder".

The Ford Focus/Mazda 3 routinely hits 500k miles or more across the board, so learn how to drive or take better care of your vehicles. If you couldn't keep a 2007 Focus running, you're never going to keep a 2000 Civic running.

I heard that the "lean burn" system was a sick joke that seemed to be designed by Satan himself. Car collectors that buy cars that came with the lean burn system today promptly replace it with a more conventional system available as an aftermarket. It wasn't just Chrysler that had problems with computer controlled engines, I had a 1983 Lincoln Town Car with computer control, about every 24,000 miles that computer had to be replaced at a cost of about $150. In all other ways the Lincoln was good to me but that computer box was a problem.

@@markholroyde9412 Of course it lasted longer, but by 1978 most US car manufacturers realized they were on the wrong track and started moving in a better direction instead of stubbornly insisting that the right ad campaign could talk the public into buying bad automobiles. One of the best descriptions I ever heard of the huge increase in Japanese share of the US car market from 1975 to 1980 was the following: The Japanese came along with the radical idea that they would make cars the customers wanted to buy instead of making cars the manufacturers wanted to make.

Hold on to it with both hands, because British automotive history consists of a mix of practically hand built, custom pieces of art for the uber-rich and mass produced cramped and unreliable pieces of sh*t for everyone else. The UK has zero room to criticize anybody on the quality of real mass production automobiles. As an aside, what did the FIAT owner say to the MG owner? Need a lift? Yeah, it was that bad. The UK, just like most other long established auto makers, primarily produced sh*t through most of the 1970s.

The Plymouth Scamp was a fairly decent car with a 318 under the hood. Still had the identical looks of the previous generation Dodge Darts but no performance model. Back then cars had character with the big chrome bumpers and kids could add Cragar S/S wheels for an even more hot rod look. However, if you wanted to street race you needed a serious big block under the hood.

These were certainly some beautiful and comfortable cars for their time. Unfortunately, US automakers were going through some tough times as they struggled to meet strict emission standards and improved fuel economy. The engines in these cars were laden with thermal vacuum switches with hoses to control ignition timing, EGR, air injection; while the exhaust was choked with a 3-way catalytic converter. It wasn't just Chrysler cars; Ford, GM, and AMC were doing the same things. Have you ever looked at a vacuum diagram for a mid 1970s car? Its mind boggling. Much of it was experimental as engineers were doing what they could to reduce emissions while keeping their cars running half way decent. By the late 1970s, electronic engine controls would be the solution to that problem.

Watching the Dart now. Hmmm. We had a 72 sedan and a 75 Swinger, 225 slant 6. The 75 used every bit of the fuel of the 72, but was even slower. Great cars, but only with the V8. My preference is a 318 with 4bbl. In Canada that meant no catalytic converter.

8:35 Ha! For the petrolheads here, that electronic ignition device on the firewall was a sure fail - if and when the hood gasket failed, water would drip down over that thing and the car would never start! Same thing for the previous generation Dodge Dart.

I have had them run with the insulation melted out, water Running over them, and, Never missed a beat! Putting together a 54 Dodge pickup, and, will probably put that ignition module in it just to Try to finally kill it off! Pulled Slant 6/904 out of a '76 Dart, and I have had it in 2 other cars over the years. Approximately 250k miles on it, and still has around 120lb compression across the board! Should make the truck cruise So Well!

In those days all I had were GMC and Chevrolet (have all these days) so never knew they offered a 4x4 with 440 with extras like a built-on 8-track and CB. That Trail Duster with a 440 might have been better than my Toyota Land Cruiser(?),

I don't know about that, if you had the Land Cruiser they sold in Africa for jungle use you had one hell of a tough truck! IIRC they sold them here in the States during the early and mid 70's. My uncle had a Ramcharger (a copy of the Trail Duster), that is another slant six that didn't survive well but otherwise it wasn't a bad truck but not as tough as the Land Cruiser.

The Arrow was manufactured by Mitsubishi so it was essentially a Japanese car. The first Chrysler manufactured small car was the 1978 Omni (my grandfather had one, it was reliable for the year he owned it but so cramped inside that in 1979 he traded it and about $3K for a full size Dodge pickup). The second small car line Chrysler manufactured in-house was the Aries/Reliant cars (my grandfather got talked into one of those as well -- the Chrysler 2.2 engine completely failed at 56K miles and that car was a bucket of trouble). I had a 1983 Chrysler New Yorker which was essentially a fancy Aries/Reliant, I had the Mitsubishi 2.6 engine and at least that made 150K before it was clacking loudly and burning oil, I dumped it at that point. At least I had my truck and another car I could fall back on if my New Yorker had broke down, I felt sorry for people that bought the early 80's Chrysler compact cars that didn't have a second vehicle. Let's just say I liked my 1967 Chrysler Imperial much better but 14 years and 250K plus is about all she had in her.

Yeah...it was the dark years for all American makers. It stayed pretty dark until the introduction of the Ford Taurus in 85 and the Minivan. But at that point it was still a slow crawl out of the darkness.

While I grew up in the 70's, I'd forgotten how utterly FUGLY most US car design was at the time. The only cars which looked remotely decent were the Arrow & the Sapporo. The one segment where they tell the dealer how to counter sell against the Toyota Corolla are hilarious. "Just tell 'em they you have more gadgets! Who cares if they break easily!" And boy howdy, did they.

My wife had a 76 Dodge Volare. A 318 with a torquefight 3 speed auto. The body and paint were horrible. What a rust bucket and it was only three years old. The brakes were inadequate for the weight of the car. I honestly thought Chrysler had a bin of parts from earlier models and just slapped them on. I also owned a 74 Dodge heavy 3/4 ton crewcab pickup. That was a well built truck. A bit dated and rather stoggy in design.

They made a big mistake replacing the A-body cars with the F-body ones, the grades check out. Those 1976 Volare/Aspen cars were the motor trend car of the year but almost bankrupted Chrysler

The venerable 72-93 Dodge full-size trucks. For the most part if they were equipped with one of the V8s they were excellent trucks. I owned two, my grandfather owned two and my father one. Only my father's (or maybe I should say my mother's as she pretty much took it over as soon as he bought it) gave trouble ridiculously early -- and it was the only one of the bunch with the slant six.

51:10 Dodge compares the Arrow to the Datsun B210 Hatchback, which looks exactly the same as the arrow, then they tell us how the b210 is old, been around for years. Unlike our new car which we started ripping off from Datsun the year it debuted, but now we're ready and our car looks tack-sharp, while theirs is an old ladys car now. lol. If they had picked the same color to compare in, you wouldn't know the difference.

My mother rolled her Datsun B210. The roof crushed in severely and she said anyone that would have been in the back seat would have been a dead person. The junkyard guy did drive it onto his car hauler even after the rollover accident, though -- I will give it that!

The only gen that’s worse is the 80’s gen FWD Charger. That being said, I’d still happily take one. It’s not that it’s a bad car, it’s that it’s clearly attempting to be a Monte Carlo competitor and not an actual Charger.

I grew up in the back of a 1961 Impala, that was a comfy place to be. God I miss those days. And hey, today, 2022, who gives a hoot about the so called non existent economy. The footage with dad and mom in the front seat, and three teenagers in the back, my immediate thought was 'in 2022 the parents are divorced LONG before the kids hit their teenager years, and the teenagers have infected face piercings, an inability to work and a habitual pot use with drinking 1975 fine. That was about 50 years ago. Things have changed, the arrival of pronouns and extra genders. Mein gott. . .
