This is The 11/13/1976 Alabama at Notre Dame game. The last 4 and a half minutes or so is a game film with radio audio. Neither school was at their peak in 1976 but both were loaded with underclass talent. So much so that they would win the next two national championships. Notre Dame in 77 and Alabama with a split title in 1978 with USC. The Tide kind of staked a claim in 77 after blowing out Ohio State in The Sugar Bowl but you have to wonder if this 76 loss to The Irish in South Bend might have cost them support in the finalpoll. I claim no rights.

Thank you! Nothing like watching the original telecast with commercials. Much preferred over radio broadcast and film but I know back then you were lucky if your team got on television twice a year

I went to this game. I had forgotten how chilly it was-I think the sun made it feel warmer. I also had forgotten seeing all those Confederate flags. It was the first regular season game a Bear Bryant-coached Alabama team played in the northern United States. Bear went 0-4 against ND, losing by margins of 1, 2, 3, and 7 points.

Absolutely hate we lost this game. In closing minutes Bama was on 7 yard line and open man in flat...Rutledge tried to thread a pass in end zone that was intercepted. We lost 21-18. I was 15 and magical trip, but heartbreaking given two close loses in '73/'74. Starting Tide QB O'Rear had a stomach virus and couldn't play much that day.

To bad he lost his dad. Probably motivated him to be the success he was.

Thanks for posting! Always remember Rutledge had Pete Cavan wide open to the right for a TD but threw the interception instead 😞 Game over. I liked Bear’s Russian hat on the pregame interview. That was a first!

Sela Ward was a Bama cheerleader, the gorgeous brunette. She was something back in the day...

Yes Saban had success against Notre Dame. But found it curious that Bear Bryant could not beat Notre Dame for the life of him. Sometimes in sports teams ,players just have your number.

But Bear Bryant had Joe Paterno's number as I remember it.

Bryant went against *much* better ND coaches (Ara Parseghian and Dan Devine) than Saban did (Boob Davie and Brian Kelly).

You can tell it's November 'sweeps' time, 'competing' for ratings with jiggle and blow-dried hair in "The Battle" Must have been a lot of sets on and nobody watching during the pre-game in Crimson Tide land, with a definite slant for ND. That day's weather was a preview of what Ozzie Newsome would play in on the lake with Browns. Breaker-breaker, CB 'craze' well on it's way, good buddy... Steve Z. really fills out the screen, looks heavier than he did in 80's-90's. From the director - ...get me cheerleaders!...

That was Don Criqui, then of CBS Sports doing the radio broadcast in the last few minutes. On the final Alabama drive Ara Parseghian wondered if Bear Bryant would go for the win or the tie. It’s ironic because Parseghian was heavily criticized in 1966 for not passing the ball and settling for a tie against Michigan State in the “Game of the Century”.

Geez. Don Criqui was a busy dude for autumn weekends back then.

I always thought those uniforms that West Virginia wore during that period were flat out trying to copy Notre Dame and Navy. Then Don Nehlen became coach and put in unis that looked like Michigan's jerseys, only without the signature helmet that the latter school had.

Too bad these teams didn't play in 77. That would have been a good year for a Playoff

I think Alabama would’ve won in September, but ND was virtually unbeatable by January.

43:56-44:16 I have always said that that sort of thing should be banned at all levels of football, not just college. IMO, if you want to go for it on 4th and short, just either go for it or punt, but don't go through the whole dog and pony show of trying to get the opposing defense to draw offsides. IMO, it's a huge waste of time.

Rutledge only had two wide open players on the interception in the end zone to seal it. Guess he thought Browner was wearing red and white, as he threw it right to him.
