The fact that this game was played in the afternoon sunshine and on real grass gives it a classic feel. I wish more college football was still like this.
@@jamedlock83artificial turf causes more injuries then well kept grass. Almost all NFL stadiums use grass. Most colleges use turf since it is cheaper to maintain.
There's a lot of schools who didn't take care of their grass. That's why ND went to Field Turf. They didn't maintain their grass enough to justify keeping it.
Ah 2005. A much simpler time. USC was on top. MySpace was at its peak. You were on limewire looking for your favorite song. You made calls on a landline. People wore Livestrong bands. And when everyone had higlights in their hair. No worries about a virus. A conspiracy theory didn't flood the net. No stupid Instagram or Tiktok.
It's 2005. My team (UGA) is a winning team during the height of Mark Richt's coaching era. Mom has some Dominoes on the way and she is making some spaghetti and garlic bread downstairs. My brother is playing Madden in our room and my dad is walking up the stairs with some cold Big Red sodas while I switch on to this game in my parents room on their big T.V. Good times. Good times.
This USC team was an absolutely insane team. Pretty sure everyone starting for them was drafted or played in the NFL. But remember watching this game thinking Notre Dame didn't have a chance since USC were the champs and basically the same team as last year, so ND staying in this game was pretty big, Quinn looked like a NFLer in this game
No, the usc defense was terrible compared to the previous year. Especially the secondary, this is why they got exposed in the rose bowl by Vince Young.
Wow I can't believe this was only recently. And College Football and sports was so much different then. No politics what so ever just playing sports. Miss that time. I remember watching this game and the ending as a Irish fan killed me. It's still an epic game and one of the best ever played. This is why I love and still love College Football.
@@Xzrohrh Politics doesn't belong in sports, if I want that I'll watch CNN or MSNBC or any those other crap stations. That's why ESPN is nothing but drama king trash now.
It's NOT historical at all. ND went 6-6 with Tyyyrrooonneee Willingham the year before. Carroll beat a 1st coach by 3 pts. So did unranked MSU. ND beat 3 ranked teams that ALL finished UNRANKED. So ND beat no final ranked teams and lost to the 2 ranked teams they played. What a FING joke of game in retrospect. ND is a farce. Never a conf championship, EVER, and is 0-1 in championship games. It gets better, 0-14 in bowls against top 15 teams since 95.
You'll Never see nick saban take his alabama teams on the road out of conference, into a Hostile environment, and play a #9, a #8 or a #6 team like Pete carroll use to do with USC.
Well, when the SEC annually puts 5,6 sometimes 7 of its teams in the top 20 it doesn't really matter, he's playing against the toughest competition in the country twice a month
@@cityofchamps66 LMAO! Ok..... hide behind your patty cake, bullshit schedule. I give your conference president credit for scheduling your conference favorably to make it to the big game. But let's not pretend you SEC folkd play a tough OOC schedule. Citadel, Lousiana-Monroe, Tennessee Chat and all those other pussy schools are NOT worthy opponents. GTFOH!
@@moet1823 I'm a college football fan? The SEC has produced 9 of the last 12 National Champions, it's not even open for debate which is the toughest and best football conference in the country GTFOH and STFU
Best game I ever saw college or pro and the Rose Bowl of that year as well was the best as well. USC had a team full of NFL caliber athletes and Notre Dame had a collection of guys that made them earn everything, it was a thrill to watch this one.
@dark8prince201 *"Matt Leinart vs. Vince Young Rose Bowl'* Why Carroll can never be considered a great coach. Everybody knew Vince was running right, play after play, and Carroll could do nothing.
This season was just a great season all around! USC and Texas both go to wire-to-wire #1 and #2 the whole season, couldn't set up a better championship game
I paid $400 to watch this game on the 30 yard line! The evening before there were 45000 fans in the stands for the pep rally! I remember watching Lear jet after Lear jet flying into South Bend that night as the high rollers came out of the woodwork. Great memories!
USC was loaded with talent then but I really enjoyed watching this Fighting Irish team. Quinn was a solid college quarterback and Darius Walker was smooth. Notre Dame's defense was damn good, too.
The craziest game I have ever watched in my life up to date. Matt Leinart will always be a God in the eyes of 'SC fans and is in college football immortality because of this.
@@bretcobearo373 I was being sarcastic in response to Ted, seems odd to pinpoint a singular class a guy took when he already completed the academic requirements to graduate and figured to take a class on dancing.
3:09:16 has to be one of the greatest passes and receptions in football history! A 4th down do or die situation, just incredible!! For Leinart to put that ball exactly where it needed to be, Jarrett making the catch in stride with the DB right on his back who could’ve easily batted it down, absolutely amazing!!
Yes, and what is amazing as well is that on that 4th down, Leinart called an audible in that roaring stadium to set up that play to Jarrett when he noticed the one-on-one coverage on Jarrett who stood about one foot taller than the DB that was covering him. Leinart's pass landed right on the numbers...amazing.
USC in the 2000s - collected all the best talent from the state of CA (all you need) + surrounding states. Fast forward to 2019 - the best are all leaving PAC-12 territory because of the relative obscurity of west coast college football. Teams like Clemson and the SEC are grabbing the elite guys. What a difference 15 years makes.
These days feel like a century ago. The SEC has been dominant for so long that I can't even remember what it was like before when other conferences actually could compete.
Thank goodness for Elite Mighty Bama that just had the most dominant dynasty in the entire history of college football. The SEC has five different programs that have won the national title in the past twenty years.
2005 had so many memorable games. I remember playing golf with my dad this Saturday and catching the end of the Bama Ole Miss game in the clubhouse then getting home and watching this game.
This came up on my feed and you can still feel the electricity emanating from a game long ago. A all-time classic waking up the echos of greatness! Fight On! Troy.
What! Knowing the following, you cannot feel the same way.
Right at the end, NBC Sports threw it over to NASCAR's 2005 UAW GM Quality 500. This is an infamous race among NASCAR fans because of Goodyear tire failures that night, rivaling the 2008 Brickyard 400. Crazy that NBC broadcasted two famous sporting events back to back.
I absolutely enjoyed the USC Notre Dame football game in 2005! What a heck of a game this was! Also, the green jerseys from Notre Dame was a neat throwback!
I remember watching this as I kid and thinking even though they lost Charlie Weis is no doubt going to take Notre Dame back to the promised land. Never would have thought he eventually would become one of the biggest busts ever.
@@jamesconnor2278 wasn’t a prick. Weis was a good dude and loved Notre Dame. Never would have left them the way BK just did. He never could get the coaching part down though. Hell of a recruiter and that’s it.
I remember like it was yesterday watching this game and losing my mind when the game ended only to be out done later that year when USC played Texas for the national championship
I have been watching and attending USC football for over 50 years and I am a proud USC alumni. I was at this game. The 1st and only time I’ve been to Notre Dame. It was the most epic football game I’ve ever seen. Fight On! ✌🏼🤨
I was not able to watch this game live because I could not get NBC's signal in the holler of southwest Missouri I was living in at the time. Thank you for uploading this video.
Nothing GREATER than seeing those looks of disbelief of the faces of the Irish players as SC snatched the last second victory. I come back often just to watch that clip. FIGHT ON!
One of the best CFB games you'll ever see (esp. since 'SC won). The venue, the score, the greatness of this rivalry...all were on display in this one. And I tell you: I'm an 'SC fan, but I dig those Kelly Green ND unis. Was pretty much of a perfect Saturday afternoon of CFB. And then, came the Rose Bowl (smh).
I've been on the internet too much. 40 seconds in and the music playing in the background is giving me flashbacks of that naked russian dude dancing to Pirates of the Caribbean.
Hey HEAT1996, you are uniformed. No one affiliated with USC paid Reggie Bush. Reggie was with USC already into his 3rd season when an outsider approached his dad. They collaborated to attempt to get reggie to sign with new area sports managment when reggie turned pro. This guy could care less about reggie playing for usc or not. There is alot more to the story which i not bother explaining to you. You just sound so ignorant throwing out stupid comments like that. Most of SC's roster were from SoCal and have always had USC on their radars. Fight on!
One of the main reasons why this game was so great to watch was because of NBC. If this were on ESPN/ABC their annoying Commentators would be bugging us all game long!
Well if it was on ABC back then it would have still been great because ABC Sports was still around. Even ESPN was good back then. Only in the late 2000s when ESPN became about themselves rather than sports did it start to go off the rails. Getting rid of ABC Sports, an extremely valuable brand with 50 years of built up equity, was also a monumental mistake.
I know this is an old comment, but I just had to respond to you. The fact that you're a Noter Dame fan, I had a hard time not calling them what us SC fans call them but I have respect for you so I decided to say it right. But anyways, the fact that you're their fan yet you still made a positive comment and not one crying about how SC rightfully got a 2nd chance, proves to me that you're a true fan of the game and I have nothing but respect for you!!! I remember watching this game and listening to their fans screaming "bullshit" because they were given 7 seconds back to run another play. It was totally obvious that the ball went flying out of bounds with what I saw 8 seconds on the clock!! Really doesn't matter how many seconds we're on the clock, there was time left and the refs made the right call. But it was and probably still is one of the most exciting and fun games I've ever watched!!!
@@Westsideauditor1469 It was the right call no doubt. And if they had instant reply in this game it would have shown. Charlie should have put more men on the line during that last play. Everyone knew they were going to run it. I am sure that people were exhausted there after this game. I still like watching this game every now and then. I was at the Bama and Texas a&M game in 2012 and even though we lost in a good game it was a honor to see Manzel play in his prime.
I was a huge USC Trojan fan having grown up in that neighborhood where USC is at. This game brings me back to those memories man, I was a senior in HS and I had been following the trojans since Troy Polumalu and Carson Palmer were on the team. What a game this was, watching it I am realizing I remember so many plays and moments. Even though I went on to attend Cal I always root for the Trojans and I hope they make a comeback and beat up on everyone (except Cal) like they used to lol
Leinart to Jarret on 4th and 8 was the most clutch college football play I've ever seen. I remember jumping up and down after that catch. I just knew USC would score a TD after that!
This game was instant classic 10yrs ago well known as The Bush Push for Reggie Bush pushing Matt Leinart into the endzone for the game winning touchdown
As ND fan, they got this right. As long the ball out OB...the clock must stop, BUT if the ball went OB in the 'touchdown' area, it will be a touchback. NDvsFSU one in 2014 was fixed. Utah did the samething.
Only flaw this USC team had was defensive back play....other than that they were unbeatable for the most part. Any of these recent alabama teams wouldnt stand a chance against this USC team Reggie Bush was a man amongst boys.
USC lost 2 1st Team All Americans and 2 3rd Team All Americans in DTs Patterson and Cody, and LBs Tatupu and Grootegoed in 2004. No Team can Lose 2 All American DTs, and an All American MLB and OLB and get better. To say the secondary play (which did suck compared to 03 and 04 USC) was the only reason is wrong.
H Smells I don’t know about the 2017 Alabama squad, but the 2018 Clemson and 2019 LSU teams, yes. Those two were easily the two best college football teams that we’ve seen since the 2001 Miami Hurricanes.
I’m just now noticing that during 4th down and 9(obvious pass situation) Leinart still took the snap from under center. The game has changed lol. This game is an all time classic.
Yeah after years of not watching I can finally watch it again and respect it to be a great football game. But at the time I was heartbroken. I don't know which was worse. The Michigan State loss earlier that year or this one?
I think just because this was #1 USC on a 27 game winning streak and all the hype surrounding it, this was a worse loss to swallow. The MSU loss and the way it happened really lingered too though.
rtrumble Yeah I think your right also I remember all the hype surrounding Charlie at the time on campus and everybody thought he would lead the Irish back as being relevant again even after his first season I thought he could still do it since it was his only first one. But that never worked out.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE UPLOAD.. Huge Reggie Bush Fan and love going back and watching him in his College Days.. Your The best man... and its great quality too..
The amount of adrenalin he must have felt at 3:09:10. When he sees the corner shade zone, then fake audibles to see if the corner stays set. Oooof...... chills.
Still can’t believe they didn’t stop the clock when Leinart was tackled and the ball was very obviously knocked out of bounds. Smh that guy (the time keeper) caused a lot of unnecessary chaos.
