C9 Nightingale was the USAF’s premier airframe for aerovac missions back in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. Same cargo door and first class passenger seats plus a litter bay. Southern Air Transport used the DC-8 for hauling freight back in the day. They also had the largest fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130's as well as some Boeing 747 Air Freighters. SAT was quite the company to work for as many believe they had ties to the CIA. I was the manager of their C-130/L382-100 Flight Simulator Maintenance team at the HERCULES FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER which SAT acquired from LMT, in Marietta, Georgia. The Air Cargo haulers have always held a place in my heart, which brings me to watching your VLOG. Many Thanks for this interesting ride with this flight.

Patrick, I don’t think you can improve much more on what your channel offers. Although maybe more “behind the scenes”, looking at maintenance and repairs. Technical focus on the different systems explained and shown by engineers. All the stuff we don’t normally see. But keep it up with the legacy jets and props as they are truly living aviation history. Also, the pilots get to do proper hands on flying. Which I’m sure they always prefer 👍

We worked on C141 with crossfeed for fuel. We didnt think too much about balancing as sharing fuel in case an engine surged. And a transfer from one tank to the other would be necessary.
@sharoncassell9358
@sharoncassell9358 Год назад
A co worker was balancing tanks one night on the ground an fell asleep briefly. When he opened his eyes one wing was near the ground. He realized it in a jolt and crossfed back the other way. Lucky nobody saw and nothing happened. That was close. I don't think modern jets use this method manually anymore. It's automated. I think.

Man she sure is a hand full to fly. Flew on one once from Montreal to fort laudable back in late 90’s. It was kind of tight in the seats, besides that it was a ok flight

Is that metallic tape on a latch for the left engine cowling?
@sharoncassell9358
@sharoncassell9358 Год назад
Metallic speed tape. Very strong. Covered bullet holes from Viet Nam. I fixed planes' cracked windshields, tires brakes. Avionics motors, flaps installation but hydraulics and another department dealt with aircraft skin sheet metal to replace panels when they need to be.

Wonderful coverage. Very interesting to hark back to the early years of jet aircraft technology. Friendly crew and fantastic multi camera views and editing. How often can we get a cargo door opening and closing view! Or a view on top of a pallet while loading. When Capt George is talking outside via his lapel microphone, the quality is excellent. BUT go to those horrid headset microphones and the quality drops dramatically with all that air popping noise that is very annoying and makes the clarity suffer. You would think that, in 2022, flight crew microphones could advance past 1940 audio quality.
@AirClipscom
@AirClipscom Год назад
yes that is something that also annoys me and I also had the idea to bring my own mics but the flight crew is not allowed to switch any of the Technics that is involved in the actual flying because of an emergency case

Good video and nice crew. The thing that stood out to me were the avionics consisting of a stick on Garmin and not much else. The plane must have had some serious maintenance over the years at least I hope so.

Yes the kept the standard of this government plane really good maintained. On of the most stunning facts about this plane was that it had such a good shape

Patrick, I'd love it if you could find out from the crews you fly with what the total hours and cycles are of the aircraft in each video? It would be fascinating to know how many hours and cycles some of these older aircraft are up to now. Love the videos, keep them coming!

I can remember flying on DC 9 as a kid in the 70s and early 80s and the engine noise levels were louder than the B727s we often flew on. Had to yell at my brother just to have conversation..I loved it though..I was fascinated by all the mechanical sounds. Flaps retracting, landing gear..reverse thrusters...amazing experience..last time I flew one was in 2007 on a northwest airlines DC 9.. great workhorse of an aircraft..

Nice planes were that when I flew with it for the first time around 1973 with KLM (i am a Dutchman 72 years), the time of the Caravelle (Air France), the BAC-111 from BA, the DC-8 also flew once from Amsterdam - London (was a stopover ) and with the Boeing 747 (100 I thought) to New York, the first types around 1976. But a question about this DC-9, the window frames are quite rusty, isn't that a problem for flightworthiness? (Translate via Google)
