Carlo Gambino died in the early morning hours of Friday, October 15, 1976, at his home in Massapequa, New York, having watched the television broadcast of the New York Yankees winning the American League pennant the previous evening. The official cause was natural causes; however, his death was not unexpected, given a recent history of heart disease. Cusimano & Russo Funeral Home hosted his wake on October 16 and 17, 1976. His funeral mass was held on October 18, 1976, at the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Brooklyn. Gambino was then entombed within his family's private room in the Cloister building of Saint John's Cemetery, Queens in New York City. He is interred beside his wife, Catherine, who had died in 1971. Gambino left behind sons Thomas, Joseph and Carlo, and daughter Phyllis.
Longtime associate Charles Luciano and many other lifetime friends are also interred in Saint John's Cemetery. After leading the Gambino crime family for 20 years, and the Commission for more than 15 years, Gambino left a crew estimated to be 500 soldiers and 1,000 associates. Some sources state that Gambino's funeral was attended by at least 2,000 people, including police officers, judges and politicians, and that his funeral motorcade exceeded 100 vehicles.

A former cop told me this Carlo Gambino story. Gambino was in back of his car, riding on Ocean Avenue, in Brooklyn, when he was stopped by an officer, for speeding. His driver attempted to flex, letting the cop know who's in the back. Carlo tapped the driver on his shoulder; giving him a finger wag, telling him to shut it, and obey the officer. The cop directs Gambino and the driver to come with him to the station. Gambino's car follows the cop car to the precinct. Gambino walks into the station, and the entire precinct, along with the captain, yells, "Hey, Carlooooooo!" Gambino offers to pay the ticket. The captain waives Gambino and the ticket off! "Have a nice day, Carlo!" That told me the respect Gambino got, for keeping a low profile and not being a jerk, as a boss.....!

9:00 I know this is hard to comprehend, but my wife and I lived in a mob-controlled neighborhood in Brooklyn in the early 1980s (not Gambino's neighborhood, but another area). The truth of the matter is, the neighborhood WAS very safe and very nice, even for us, and we were not Italian. That's the case in places where mob guys live. They won't put up for two minutes with bullshit from the "undesirables" toward ANYONE living in the neighborhood.

Fun fact: the guy at 2:00 looking around whose name was Frank Amato, was killed after his wife (which was Paul’s daughter) had a miscarriage because it was thought he was to blame for it after allegations from his wife he used to beat her. Middle class villains who actually survive due to an ability to mix with, infiltrate and blend into the background. Non thuggery in its blatant uncontrolled forms is a definite ate no no for a "man of honours" accepted rules of behavior. It's Brooklyn, NY 1976. Everything is great, if your an Italian American. And why is everything great ? Because La Cosa Nostra is employing everyone. They are supporting high level elected officials, and policing their neighborhoods. Most white folks have fled to the burbs, but Italians remain because the unemployment rate is zero, And the crime rate in Italian neighborhoods is also zero. How else would a bunch of poorly educated fools like these live such a nice life style? And why would they have such nice thing to say about Carlo, a high level criminal? Mr. Carlo Gambino could hold a meeting with his men, and not say 4 words. He didn’t say anything twice. Devil his due, the man commanded respect.

He also barely spoke in english, he spoke a lot in sicilian slang with his mens or zips of the family. He didnt talk much and most of his talks was in sicilian, thats one of the reasons he never spent time in jail, only 22 month when he was young.

@@princekareem6872 how influential and powerful were the Gambinos under Don Carlo Gambino back in the 50s-70s? Was there any other criminal organization with the same weight in the East Coast that could wipe them out?

These people think Carlo Gambino was a nice sweet old grandpa but they don't even want to know how brutal some of his crimes were as a Younger man....if they saw what this frail old man was capable of they would have nightmares for months so he was no saint by any stretch of the imagination
