Here is an old 1977 Lennox natural gas furnace tour. It is model # G8D2-82-3
I made a video previously just on the startup, this one is more comprehensive. If you have any old furnace questions, leave them below and I may be able to assist.
This furnace may not be too efficient but it seems to work quite well, it really puts out the heat. Modern furnaces are much more complicated and although efficient, there are more points to break and fail.

We bought a house now from 1965, still the original furnace in it, also from Lennox. We plan on keeping it so long we can. Just do proper maintenance on it. That's built to last.

Solid old furnace. As a licensed gasfitter in alberta i am a huge proponent of the old standard efficient furnaces, they are way more reliable than the newer ones and their efficiency is great. The parts are affordable and that offsets any cost of replacement parts for the higher efficiency units. Whats going on with all those blocks of wood under the blower assembly? Looks like someone used the wrong blower and shimmed it. Heat exchanger looks good but the best indication of a cracked heat exchanger is done through combustion analysis. Keep that old beast till shes not safe to run. Itll never let you down on a cold winters day
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 4 года назад
The blocks of wood were used by the previous owner so the fan didn't drop down so far when he'd take it out to lube the motor. I just left that in there since it's not harming anything.
@markallan9050
@markallan9050 4 года назад
@@InternetDude those blowers are heavy and you almost have to lift them with your feet and legs so he used them as a stand and a second set of hands. I see now! One time in like -50C, I found an old ICG with a broken bracket on the blower so as i waited for parts i temporarily had a big trailer furnace blower in there strapped to two blocks of wood. Wasnt sure if that was the case here. I worked on one of these the other day that was a counterflow model.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 4 года назад
The blower is surprisingly quite heavy, yes! I lubed the motor a couple months ago, I put too much in and some of it ran out. Learned a lesson. It takes a little work to get that in and out by yourself. I bought a manometer to check the pressure and adjust it if needed. That'll have to wait until spring just in case I screw something up LOL.
@markallan9050
@markallan9050 4 года назад
@@InternetDude you can also do simple temp checks with a digital thermometer. For oiling i go about three drops at a time then turn it over by hand. Just a few drops per year is good. Youll hear it make a huge difference in sound. Also for a couple hundred bucks canadian you can get a new motor for it
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 4 года назад
Would a new motor use less electricity? If I would just save lubing the motor it's not worth it to me, the previous owner said he lubed it every 2 years (he lived there 28 years).

The fire looks fine. Like Google User said, the flashes of yellow are little bits of dust and dirt burning off. You see a similar effect on other gas appliances such as a range or water heater. What you don’t want is a “lazy” yellow flame. It is bright yellow and flickery like a candle flame.

We got a house built in 1888 that was remodeled in the 70s with a Rheem gas furnace. I cleaned and checked it with an inspection camera. I repaired leaky supply and return ducts in the crawlspace and put in a smart thermostat. There is a floor vent for combustion air, but this old house is leaky, which is especially evident on windy days. I put smoke and CO detectors in every room and will maintain the furnace as we remodel and improve the efficiency of the building It does produce great heat at 80 percent 80,000 BTUs output with two burners, made in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I plan on replacing the gas system with a new blower and hydronic heat exchanger in the crawlspace heated with an air to water heat pump with a solar thermal water tank, and a separate split system in that attic exhausting outside to heat the upstairs.

Thanks for the memorys. We used one like this ourselves for 25+ years. I remember it being noisy when the fan kicked in. We called the heater the USS Titanic Boilers. You could just see all the gas it took to fire that thing up and it would run that way for many hours. $$$ We replaced it with a hybrid heater with AC. Heater runs on gas or electricity and with the solar panels we can save huge amounts of money. You program heater with your local prices for energy and the system will pick the source of power based on what source is cheapest. You really don't know when its working in that you can bearly hear it running. It was a big jump in technology between the different heaters. Like 1920's compared to 2018, just saying. Old heater was like yours a 1976 model. When you change yours out don't skimp, just go for it and get the best one you can afford and you will not be sorry. Great video.

Thanks I'm going to give replacement some serious thought this year. Long story it's not in my house, it's in a commercial building that's vacant so honestly if CO is leaking into the offices it doesn't matter in the slightest right now. If I did something it would be in the summer when I am not rushed at all.

Had the same furnace. Reliable as hell. Problem with these is the pilot uses a lot of gas (~10%) and the furnace uses ambient air which causes negative air pressure which sucks in cold outside air that must be heated. Overall efficiency is then 49%. The 90%+ unit will have direct air vents in and out, no pilot and a 2nd heat exchanger. I've had mine 15+ years no issues at all. I've saved almost 10k in that time. Install was 2600. Air seal your house, upgrade poor insulation, replace windows. These 3 upgrades alone reduced my heating energy requirements by almost 1/2.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 года назад
Yeah I don't have a combustion air intake setup so you can feel the negative pressure. This furnace has been reliable still to this day. Part of me wants to replace it purely to use a lot less natural gas but I think my ducting would need to be changed out to make that work. I am ordering new windows for the place so maybe I should consider the furnace next year??

Best indication of a cracked heat exchanger is seeing the Crack. In this furnace the Crack is in the back of the heat exchanger where the chamber narrows. We use mirrors, lights, scopes, and combustion analysis. A pro is worth the money if skilled.

The flames look better than on your other video. The left burner looks misaligned - crossover tubes should line up and stay that way. If it gets worse you may get delayed ignition. You can't tell if a furnace is properly tuned by looking at the flames; yellow can just be caused by dust and you can have perfectly blue flames but high co production or too much excess air. You would need to call a tech with the right tools to check fuel input and combustion. (the fuel input u can actually check by clocking the gas meter, but can't check combustion) You can't tell if the heat exchanger is cracked on this model by checking for disturbances. You need to get in there with a flashlight (or snake camera) and check back of every cell where it starts to curve for cracks.

I remember having a Trane furnace of this type prior to summer 2013. I was very young at the time but I remember it working very well when it was there. I could set the thermostat 5 degrees higher and it would bring it up in 15 minutes. The only reason it was ever replaced was because the compressor outside died and we had done an addition to the house so more capacity was needed
@mbarker_lng
@mbarker_lng Год назад
I can't speak for this model, but on newer ones if the exchanger is cracked it is usually evident by flames blowing backward over the tips of the burner. This can also happen if the passageways in the secondary exchanger get corroded shut (if you even have a secondary). The tubes are narrow and it happens with a condensing furnace. I know all this the hard way. The repair man wanted 5000$ to fix it, or 10,000$ to replace the whole furnace. Luckily I found out the whole thing is basically modular and comes apart with a single socket. The only pitfall being they used generic electric connectors in this furnace (a Hayes model) so you must carefully mark or photograph each connection. The rest was just a major unbolting/bolt back together operation and 1400$ in parts for both exchangers. Because you can't really tell if its a crack or clog till you take it apart, best to just replace both. Obviously do this at your own risk because if you mess up, you can flood your house with carbon-monoxide (the seal between the burners and exchangers is the crucial bit). After the repair, I replaced the batteries in all 3 of my CO detectors. A CO detector costs about 15$- your life is priceless so its a good idea to have them anyhow.

What is the life expectancy of a unit like this? I've got a Lennox furnace just about like this. My neighbor said not to let anyone sell me a new furnace and keep this one until it dies (the heat exchanger goes out for instance) as they are simple units and thus simpler to fix and more reliable. I know that it is 37 years old I know for sure and figure it's more like 49 years old and was put in the house when it was built in 1972. Works like a champ.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 года назад
I agree 100%. I have been tempted to replace it for efficiency reasons but these will outlast any modern furnace by decades. My other property has a furnace that is 14 years old and every year needs the flame sensor cleaned or replaced, and you have to worry about the exhaust pipe freezing up outside. Sure it's more efficient but is not as trouble-free. Modern furnaces have way more things to go wrong, no question.
@slundgr
@slundgr 3 года назад
@@InternetDude Thank you very much for your reply. My neighbor says the same thing about the new furnaces that you have to have someone come out every year and clean them, maintain them. A new furnace means business for the vendor. The majority of his brother's service calls on new furnaces were related to electronics or some board went bad, and filters clogged. On the one hand I know nothing lasts forever, but then I think that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Every HVAC vendor wants to sell me a 95% efficiency furnace, but it's only my dog and me, and my house is a 1008 sq. ft. ranch. I'd have to live another 70 years to pay off the "savings" of the new efficiency. Vendors say my old furnace may go out in the dead of winter and I'd be two days without heat. Well, it may not, also. I have a lot of blankets and can drip the faucets. If a vendor won't give me a quote for just an AC, I'm tempted to just go with my old furnace, buy a portable evaporative cooler, suck it up and go down to the basement when it gets hot. I live in Colorado so the three days of 100 degree temps in June were the exception, and there is some cooling at night. Thanks again.
@Jon-hx7pe
@Jon-hx7pe 2 года назад
@@InternetDude exhaust pipe freezing up is caused by incorrect installation, it is supposed to slope towards the furnace so the condensate drains back into it, not outside. the length of time can go without cleaning the flame sensor varies, many HE units taking combustion air from outside can go for years. definitely, new ones have more to break, but on the plus side they don't dump 30 to 40% of the heat produced on average (including standby loss) up the stack. they're also safer, your g8 doesn't have even have a flame rollout switch.

I have thought about heat pumps but they cut out when I need them the most - dead of winter. Even though your Lennox furnace is ancient, things were built to last back then. If it's operating good, don't mess with it. Sure it may not be as efficient but it's dependable. An idea though... keep your furnace for real cold winter, but add a heat pump for summer and nice winter temps (above -10)?? Use both.

These heat exchangers had S curved heat exchangers that would crack. Yours could be cracked and should be replaced to avoid carbon monoxide problems. You would have to cut the back of the furnace out to know. The gas valve you have does turn on slow. Looks like it is running ok.

Used to have a G8 furnace, checked it myself once a year, you shine a bright flashlight into the burner inlets angled high towards the area of each cell that's known to crack , I've seen pics, if there's a crack it appears as a very faint line with some rust darker than the normal oxidization. You get down on your knees and look upwards inside the heat exchanger. You can also use a snake camera.

@DONALD1951 5 лет назад
scart78 another way is to start the fan and put a wax taper or match on an extender into each section inside..if it blows out or blows around there probably is a crack or hole in the heat exchanger.. 65% efficient. After you light the pilot and it stays lit without depressing the knob, turn it to on. If it's already set to on, use a meter to tell if there's voltage at the gas valve with a call for heat and work backwards. Looks for 24v ac. U can also see if the transformer itself is putting out voltage. You may have blown a low voltage fuse working on it, any contact of low voltage to ground may do that on these old units.
@DavidPilcher83
@DavidPilcher83 5 лет назад
thanks. we did a bunch of tests. we think its the Robertshaw gas valve. it only has two main leads going to the valve. im guessing a common ground which is brown and a live which is yellow, the Honeywell is putting out 25 volts. and the Robertshaw valve is slightly warm like its being powered but the energy is not going anywhere. we checked all fuses, and breakers there all good. motors good. i think the valve or electrical in the Robertshaw is just gone bad for some reason. we cleaned all the connections and everything, and nothing was happening. on the Robertshaw there is a little black plastic box and that is what the two electrical lines are going into with 3 rectangular holes in between the wires on the black plastic box. anyways we kinda tapped or jiggled the box that holds the connections and it finally started trying to click and engage the gas flow. but it still would not let the gas flow or turn on properly. so were pretty sure we need a new valve system. but thanks for the help. definitely keep it all in mind.
@Jon-hx7pe
@Jon-hx7pe 5 лет назад
there should only be two wires. You can try disconnecting them and ohming out the valve, if it's open or shorted u know the solenoid coil or internal connections to it are (is) bad. Having constant power to the valve and it not opening pretty much means it's bad. Especially if other gas appliances work. I wouldn't put much money into that furnace. A professional valve replacement will cost a lot and it's only 60 to 70% efficient and probably has a bad heat exchanger by now. The valves aren't plug and play btw - the gas pressure has to be set, gas meter clocked, ideally monoxide in the exhaust checked. Best to get a new furnace if it's in the budget -> fuels savings and possibly improved comfort from 2-stage or modulating unit. Plus high efficiency takes combustion air from outside and not having a open draft hood makes it easier to maintain a good humidity level in the house.
