I've enhanced the 1977 Week 2 Saints at Lions game. This recording was in pretty good shape, though the contrast and color was in need of a major correction, as you can see from the before/after shots here -- imgbox.com/g/iAlMfPFquf -- I enhanced it with Topaz, performing upscaling, framerate doubling, sharpening, and denoising. Resolve was employed afterwards to fix the color and contrast. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVDs for this project.

Always blacked out locally.

I always hated that rule. That's a really cheap and greedy threat. Sell out hone games or else NO TELEVISED BROADCASTS!! That was such a cheap and annoying way to push for ticket sales.

As an Eagles fan I remember blackouts in the 80s. Sometimes a local car dealership would buy like the last 1,000 and give them to the boys and girls club or YWCA/MA.. Games Vs Cardinals were always hard to sell out. But games def would be blacked out.

@@EdsterIIIBefore 1973, home games were not broadcast at all and it took an act of congress to force that I believe. The belief was if the game was televised if not sold out they would lose a ton of attendance back then.

@@BlazeOfGlory742That continued into the '90s. The last such was January 2, 2000 against the then-St. Louis Rams in ironically Dick Vermeil's return to Philly as HC of another team (final game of the 1999 season for the Eagles, first under Andy Reid).

Great color resolution and clarity - like being there. And killer unis for both teams. Lions with the silver numerals. Saints still with the dark gold helmets. Read that it was Stram who got the Saints into that black, as he'd done in Kansas City with the Chiefs using red pants. Niether team was good that year. Saints went 3-11 and lost to the 0-26 Buccaneers. Lions struggled to 6-8. Lots of dropped passes and miscues, but the hitting was pretty fierce here.

Thanks again Dave, even though the Saints lost it's neat to see these past broadcasts in such a clear light.

If you ask me, I would say; Marve Hubbard should be considered for the NFL HOF on the premise, Marve Hubbard plays until he breaks. Marve Hubbard must break something, anything if he looses. Therefore Marve Hubbard is a Hall of Famer.

Gotta love these classic games! As another commenter said, the games were usually NOT sold-out back then so the games would be "Blacked-out" in Detroit. I know how that stunk. When the Packers played in Milwaukee at Milwaukee County 🏟Stadium🏟 during the 70's and 80's many of those games weren't sell outs either. So we missed a few. Not many, but a few and it was a drag, especially if the network would play something other than football.

Dave, are you getting these from a beta tape or are you finding these from old broadcast tapes. However, man we appreciate it! I have been watching them all. LOVE it!

Well the original recordings were obviously either from amateur VCR recordings or transfers from network tapes. This one in particular was probably a VCR recording, which I was really able to enhance and bring back the color and contrast (see screenshots in my pinned comment). Nearly all of the games I've been enhancing have been given to me to work on by one of my subscribers, romelovesdan, who has an extensive collection of vintage game transfers on first-generation DVDs.

@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Sir, can you please help me identify a piece of music I've seen in NFL Films? It's been in several highlights, but I've never known the title or the composer. It's the music that plays during the Walter Payton segment of the 1978, 1981, and 1984 Bears highlight videos. Please help me if you can!
