Back to a past life. Was in the same city. But it sure was friendlier, cheaper and safer. Thanks for the far out memories. Had the Top 100 on tape. But, it has disappeared, over the years.
Malcolm greetings from Australia. Did you know that in 1969 Neil Sedaka was in Melbourne Australia and wrote a song called "Wheeling West Virginia". A local DJ Bob Rogers heard the song and encouraged Neil to record the song. The song was recorded in Sydney Australia (1969). Here is the song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1skAVcuTSoU.html Became a Top 20 hit here in Australia and New Zealand. At 3min 27 sec of the film clip is a picture of the 45 single. The arranger on the song John Farrar. John became Olivia Newton John's producer and song writer. Bringing it back to Top 100 of 1978, John wrote both "You're The One That I Want" & "Hopelessly Devoted To You" from the movie "Grease". He also wrote "Magic" from "Xanadu".
Which in turn meant RSO Records dominated the year, with the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, the Grease and Saturday Night Fever soundtracks, and even Eric Clapton and Player (the "Baby Come Back" guys). Unfortunately they also made the Sgt. Pepper's movie that year, which would result in their eventual demise. Casablanca, the other label forever associated with disco, was also riding high this year thanks to Donna Summer, Village People and Kiss. Sadly, they wouldn't make it very long in the eighties thanks to the collapse of disco, Donna Summer moving to Geffen Records, and Kiss going into decline (though they'd revive their career by ditching the makeup, and later revive their career *again* by putting it back on).

@@leanneb9529 That's right even for the seventies which was my second favorite decade for music. In my opinion, the early seventies were the best time for music (1970 to 1973). There were fewer bad songs for these early years of the seventies. The years 1974, 1975, and most of 1976 had fewer good songs than the early part of the decade. While 1977 wasn't too bad, 1978 was my favorite year of the late 70's even if it had some disco music. At least that year was not as bad for disco as 1979 was. That year was laden with crappy disco music. One of my favorite songs for 1979 was Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills.

Donald Fenwell and once again you forgot a big one, COUNTRY!. Can you honestly say that most of the songs on this list are timeless?.If your a big classic rock fan probably not. I'd much rather listen to Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Stones and others then most of this stuff that doesn't hold up today, And yes I'd much rather listen to Waylon Jennings and Wille Nelson as well as the Charlie Daniel's band and maybe even Johnny Cash and even Merle Haggard than listen to the Bee Gees!.
Fantastic year to pop music, with many fadding disco era masterpieces, but Anne Murray, Rita Coolidge and Abba's the name of the gsme are top of the tops. B Gees also were Fantastic this year

I miss the seventies, when music was played by real musicians on real instruments - no cut and paste ProTools garbage, no AutoTune... Those were the days when you made it because you worked hard and were talented - not because of publicity stunts and endless promotion. It wasn't long after the seventies when music died, probably forever...
@@jacksquat4140 I agree with you - little worth listening to after the eighties. As I mentioned, music stopped being music after the introduction of, and subsequent overuse of, and overproduction with ProTools, Autotune, etc. I love technology as much as anyone, but overproducing robs music of its soul.
@@ExSkyCyclePilot: I didn't listen to music all that much from '88 to '92, but once I began listening again, everything had changed. It seemed every band that I knew had disappeared, and even those that remained, like Michael Jackson, and Madonna, had changed, and not for the better. Having said that, I truly wonder what happened. 1986 was a solid year, but '87 saw a drastic decline in listenability. I know something was in the works that led to this downward spiral, but I think it's more than Autotune, and ProTools, which doesn't explain the emergence of Paula Abdul, Jewel, and Hootie and the Blowfish, to name a few. It seems like the entire soft rock scene had completely changed, or no longer existed.
@@jacksquat4140 Back in the day, songwriters were independent, and shopped their songs on their own to anyone who would listen. Over time, corporations and boardrooms started calling the shots, and record companies started hiring staff songwriters. All that might have been a factor in the demise of music.

Depends on if you consider the Gibb brothers and Olivia Newton-John British or Australian. (All were born in the UK but moved Down Under as children.) Actually, this countdown had a lot *less* soft rock than I'd expected. Yes, Barry Manilow was riding high, but there was enough great rock, soul, and disco music to help us overlook that.
